  1. First impressions when I opened the box were good. A large boxy fuselage with a removable door allowing access inside to secure the wings. I may hinge the door and add some magnets to secure it rather than the supplied thumb screws. I've chosen to replace the supplied hard foam wheels with some nicer rubber ones and I will fit a Du Bro tank in place of the seagull one. The supplied tank looks OK but I like the Du Bro tanks and have never had one leak as yet, unlike some of the kit supplied tanks i have used. The wheel spats are fitted and secured by clamping between the axle stub bolt and the leg so I have added some 3M double sided adhesive foam tape to hopefully prevent them turning into floats in flight. I'm using Hitec karbonite geared digital servos in this model for the first time , they perform nicely on the servo tester but the horn screws are incredibly tight to remove from new and care is needed to prevent rounding the head. .
  2. Looking for some something a bit different to add to my fleet I've purchased a Seagull Decathlon 120. My fleet consists mainly of sports aero's and warbirds and I wanted something low maintenance to house an OS 120 four stroke that's been sitting in the box for to long. I chose the Decathlon as it's a fairly aerobatic for a high wing design , a member at the club has the 90 size and it flys well. I will but up a few pictures of the assembly for those interested. They were childhood dreams, but when you grow up you put childhood aside. Except flying toys. If only I had a hand grenade to hurl at this type of individual. The type who rather than accept the dreams & wishes of one would rather taint their judgment with their own clouded views ? Peter , Fred , Adulf & Jimmy have all been proven wrong with this attitude over the last few years. 😉

    Bmfa adds

The BMFA adds certainly aren't a wast of time , I've bought and sold plenty on there without any problems whatsoever. Firstly don't put your phone number or email address onto the add. This will reduce the chances of a scammer contacting you greatly as only bonafide BMFA members will be able to contact you. I've read comments from some that they don't receive an email from the site when a personnel message is received? If so check your spam & junk folder as they may be going in there. Failing that just have a look every day or so it's no great task? If your buying and suspicious about the validity of the item request a photo from a specific angle or part view , most genuine sellers won't mind doing this. PayPal is a safety net (but certainly not totally infallible) and is very easy to use , exchanging bank details is dangerous and totally unnecessary in this day and age. Lastly, once contact has been made via the message service why not phone and chat to the buyer / seller? We're all in the same game and it's fairly easy to recognise if someone genuinely knows what he's talking about. Personally I feel the BMFA would be better off removing the phone number / email section from the adds as it's obvious more than a few undesirables are aware of the site and are looking to take advantage of some who aren't as online savvy as some.
  5. Good luck with any issues you face with an order from Bangood. They are less than helpful in resolving quality problems. Hobbyking are painful at times but will refund / replace if you go via the correct channels , Bangood are woefully lacking.
  6. Ok , I use a 14 SG and it seems similar programming. Are the recievers on the other planes the same ? It sounds odd , almost like the movement of the other sticks is somehow putting the throttle into "INH inhibited mode"? Personally with it being a fairly simple model radio control wise I think I would make a note of any trim positions & erase the program then open a new one.
  7. What model transmitter is it Cliff?
  8. I was talking to my flying buddy at the patch on Saturday who has the Hangar 9 version. He's had it a good while and has only just got around to assembling it. He too has come up with a couple of bad issues including the wings not fitting into the plug sockets and a big gap around the horizontal stabiliser. To late for him to return it unfortunately so he's having to make modifications, hopefully the Seagull airframe will be better.
  9. Hi Tim , yes there were seemingly a couple of issues with the Hangar 9 version. Frustrating indeed! The Seagull P47 does look nice & we have a couple in local clubs. The newer versions of the Hangar 9 60 size warbirds all seem to have suffered from some build quality issues and don't seem to be as good flying wise as the older range such as the Corsair , Hellcat and the silver P47. I have the 60 size Corsair new in the box waiting to be assembled.
  10. No Jonathan nothing is amiss, reading back over the thread you seem to be looking far to deeply into what is essentially a very simple internal combustion engine. Also just a side note , four stroke engines have a soft aluminium plug thread as opposed to some two stroke units that have a harder steel bushed thread. Be careful & try to not repeatedly remove & refit the plug as wear & damage may occur. If it's running ok then fly it & through use it will get better.
  11. It seems that Horizon Hobbies are proposing to close the Harlow UK office completely and run the European side of the business from Germany. Their legendary after sales service has dipped since the partial move a few years ago so a total closure in the UK can't help? They seem to offer a good service repairing the Spectrum problems but I imagine the postage would become a big issue. I had to send a light package to Holland recently and the second class recorded delivery rate was shockingly expensive.
  12. Posted by DCW on 06/01/2017 09:02:37: I think that this thread is now time expired and time to close it off. I have been in the retail business, (photographic and optics), for nearly 20 years. We never 'slag off'' the opposition, and we do not use this type of forum to promote our products. The original reason for this thread was to get members to 'shop around' for the best deals. That is what our customers do and if possible prices are adjusted accordingly. Just for the record the OS FS-62V will be going into the Devil's Duster 2, for the first few test flights however, I will be using a older less important engine just in case I have a problem. I think I have a Laser engine gathering dust somewhere in the workshop which should do..... DW Yes and a good post about shopping around for a good price it was DW. By the way some of the European shops are offering very good prices on OS & Saito engines with delivery in around 4 working days, definitely worth a look.
  13. Posted by DCW on 05/01/2017 13:59:59: Thanks Guys for the info. The main I started the thread was because of price variances and to 'shop around ' on line and get the best price. DW This is what the guy was posting about ?? Do we really need another thread about Laser engines ? It's getting very tedious now. Ok Jon produces engines that seem popular with some on here but they are a minority , very much so at my clubs. There are some excellent alternatives out there, does every thread about a four stroke have to lead to yet another marketing pitch for Laser engines ?
  14. Posted by kc on 05/01/2017 17:27:24: The Laser 70 is actually just 1 penny dearer! ( taking post into account and presuming you can only buy it by post) So why not buy British? I mean buy English! Because it's a fair bit heavier and the IS is a very good engine?
  15. BEB it's nothing about loyalty etc etc I like a good product & am lucky to be in a position to be able to buy one. I have absolutely NO interest in "free" programming or whatever else it's known as inline with many I would imagine who just want to fly. You recently stated on a thread that you couldn't understand why newcomers wouldn't go electric because of your so called convenience argument? Well maybe as a moderator you need to start looking at the bigger picture rather than pushing just what's good for you ??? Just Saying x
  16. Posted by Biggles' Elder Brother - Moderator on 01/01/2017 19:12:23: Another company way behind the curve on development. The likes of FrSsky and Spektrum will eat these people alive. Eventually their customers realise, one-by-one, that they can buy a much higher spec at a price that is at least comparable and often much lower. Futaba next? No reason why not as far as I can see - it seems to be only customer loyalty keeping them afloat as far as I can see - it certainly isn't value for money based on the spec of their product. And their reliability is not proving to be higher than their lower cost competition. We live in changing times - some seem to be struggling with that! BEB Lol give over man , the new FR Sky rubbish its literally falling apart in people's hands. Futaba won't be going anywhere, ok you used it in the past but now can't afford it as your retired, fair enough but stop beating it up BeB it's becoming a real bore! JR has been a minority brand for a long time , shame it's going as it seemed to handle the spread technology far better than the Horizon Hobby brand. Brown & out ........

Did you buy from here Martin ?

    buddy 6EX & T8J

Hi Steve , yes it will work ok. Any contradiction is probably down to the T8j using a 6v cell in line with the newer Futaba sets whereas the 6EX operates on the older 9.6 volt. I use the Futaba voltage drop trainer lead "FUTM4405" from my 14SG and it will and has run the older 6 channel set fine. I do also have a T8j but haven't used it as yet. Flaps wise it's pretty much up to you on what channels you use it's all in the book.
  19. Hi Jonathan , the tanks in the ripmax ARTF kits are notoriously poor especially around the bung with many including myself having had them fall out completely so a double check or better still a new reliable replacement wouldn't hurt at all. Yes the vibration would be eased with some foam and yes it is worse when it's static on the ground. Also remember that running the engine in is an evolving process so the tick over will improve as the engine gets a few tank fulls through in flight. Also personally I would ditch the on board fuel filter, I use a filter on my fill line only. Why complicate things with an inline onboard filter when you can filter the fuel as it goes in? It's just another two joints to leak.  Edited By Justin K. on 22/12/2016 18:45:37 Edited By Justin K. on 22/12/2016 18:46:58 Edited By Justin K. on 22/12/2016 18:47:55
  20. Posted by Cliff 1959 on 15/12/2016 18:06:45: Thanks everyone, we'll take your views onboard at our next meeting, but we need to do something else to try and encourage those members who seem reluctant to train to a mimimum standard. Thanks Andy that's just what I was looking for. Cliff , if they are reluctant to train to a minimum standard then don't let them fly it's as simple as that. One of the clubs I fly at doesn't insist on a BMFA A cert to fly (just an ok by the committee) and it can be a fraught time on the flight line while they "perform". We have witnessed several incidents mostly involving 3 channel lumbering vintage designs operated by members who just shouldn't be allowed to fly on tier own. So if they wont train dont let them fly is the best policy in my book.
  21. Not as daft & over complicated as some think , one of my clubs talked about it as an aid to us instructors allowing us a brief overview on the progression of a pupil who has been training with other instructors.
  22. Posted by Jonathan M on 10/12/2016 23:29:30: A question also on setting the throttle (as only ever flown electric so far): i.e how is 'throttle-cut' set up on an IC? Do I set the normal throttle travel to range from tick-over to fully-open, then programme a 'kill' switch to close the throttle completely? What about 'fail-safe'? ??? Jonathan , Depending on what transmitter you are using the throttle cut is commonly in the sub programs on the TX. Basically you set up your servo ~ carb connection making sure you don't max out the servo travel and when a pre assigned switch is thrown the servo will jolt back and fully close the carb barrel thus stopping the engine.
  23. Posted by Biggles' Elder Brother - Moderator on 06/12/2016 20:24:42: Just a friendly reminder folks. This thread has been fine so far, very civil and no problem. We do need to keep it that way! This is not an opening to discussing the politics of the affair - it is a request for a book recommendation only. Let's keep it very much on a fairly narrow definition of that topic please. Thanks for your help. BEB Indeed , purely a request for info from anyone who had a decent overview book recommendation for next years holiday read. Last year I read the Vietnam history. It doesn't look like any of the regular posters can help? Feel free to erase the post mods if it's deemed inflammatory in any way. J...
  24. Posted by Donald Fry on 06/12/2016 17:20:43: As one involved I would suspect all books on that horrible wasteful and dark period of history have a definite point to prove. Yes your probably right Donald . Thanks John 👍🏻
