  1. same here, use the orange rx's, they work great and the 6EX is a good TX, Edited By trev on 27/03/2012 18:36:32
  2.   I am looking at starting with either an Escale Phoenix or Easystar Multiplex RR     Hi Dean,   I recut my teeth on an E scale Phoenix and it really is a superb and forgiving aircraft. Performs more like a powered glider really, very easy to fly and is great at long floating landings and of course is 4 channel too. I paired it with a Futaba 6EX transmitter and set the rates to about 40 percent initially - great for overenthusiastic stick work. Only slight criticism is that the wings work a bit loose with time but this is easily overcome. As you probably have guessed, I love my phoenix and wouldnt part with it for all the tea in china!   Good luck in your search.   HTH   Trev.
  3. No, me neither, don't think there is a facility to play online but would love to be corrected.
  4. Kings Lynn models are doing a sale offer on the Ikarus Aerofly Platinum at the moment.   Reduced from £142 to £60. Bought one in December and it is a fantastic simulator with superb graphics, I am delighted with it. Comes with a USB interface and all leads to plug into your own TX but if you have the futaba with the square plug, then you will need to purchase an adapter as this is not included. Shame really as this does let it down a little - supplied plugs are 3.5mm jack and round DIN plugs.   Hope this helps. Trev.
  5. I will drink to that, this forum has been so helpful to a returning newbie such as myself.   Well done those people, may your 2012 be a very airborne one.   trev.
  6. Me too, used them a couple of times - no complaints whatsoever.
  7. Hi Pete and welcome back.   I have been in a very similar situation to you, having just returned after a 30 year break. I initially found the changes in technology bewildering but this site has been a godsend and 99 percent of the advice is solid gold and helpful, it has certainly helped me. I had the same problem of what to go for to re-maiden after all this time. I strongly reccommend a push glider type a/c like the EZ star or the E Scale phoenix. They are slow, forgiving, fun and hugely entertaining but the best bit is they allow your confidence to grow. this worked for me along with a lot of stick time on a sim allowing one to get used to handling characteristics and stick orientation when the model is flying towards you. I came back in October and now find it so frustrating that the weather is against me....lol, cant wait for a break in the weather and get back up there again.   hope this helps and good luck with the landings. Trev.
  8. A Gannet would be great, I used to love watching them take off on the Ark Royal, it was fantastic and breathtaking as they were catapulted off and then that slightly heartstopping moment when they dropped off the end, only to re-appear a second later and climb.
  9. just stumbled over this aircraft on t'internet, apparently built as a prototype and actually flown. It had a minimum airspeed of just 35 mph without stalling - amazing. Actual aircraft still exists in a museum in the US, its really revolutionary and is a shame it never caught on.   Anyone fancy a crack at modelling this - it is beyond me but who knows, someone may be up for the challenge, any takers ??? I figure it would make a great foamie if the wing design could be overcome.
  10. Hmmm, the lipo screamer is definitely food for thought, never come across them. Now on my list for next order from GC.   Thanks again for all the advice.
  11. Thanks chaps, most helpful. looks like a 2s 1500 it is then.   Figured that if I keep the flights to 15 - 20 mins max then that should cover the voltage drop from going too far.   cheers   Trev
  12. Hello all. been looking around the threads for an answer to this one but just ended up confusing myself.   I have just got an Electracam for a bit of fun ( thanks galaxy models - great delivery and price ). It uses a 8.4v 900 Mah 7 cell flight pack / 380 brushed motor and I want to install a li poly instead. Questions are:   1. will the esc still run ok on it with no problems   2. what would be the best lipo be, a 2 or 3 cell and again what effect will it have on the esc / motor if any.   I have some spare 2300 3s lipos and was considering using them but figure that a 2s 1500 would be better. This will of course only give a nominal voltage of 7.4v as opposed to the 8.4 in the NiMh pack, so will pull a little more current, wheras a 3s 1500 would run at 11.1v ( too high perhaps ?).   Any input gratefully received. thanks Trev

    twinstar 2

Thanks for that Steve. Final choice by no means definitve yet. I just thought the twinstar looked nice ! . Will check out the mentor and also considering an ST Discovery too. Appreciate that simulators may not give accurate handling etc but at least it does give a rough idea when comparing handling and oddly on the sim, the landing too is very floaty if you ease the stick back just a little too much.   cheers Trev.

    twinstar 2

hello all,   having been giving loads of thought to my next plane as I need a heavier one to get my BMFA A cert, I am erring toward the Multiplex Twinstar 2. Have been trying it out on the FMS simulator and the Charecteristiscs seem to be what I am looking for. By the way, I know the FMS is after all a simulator but the characteristics do seem to be fairly life like and emulate quite well the Electrafun and Phoenix that I have for real.   I have read several reviews and there seems to be in general a big thumbs up for this model but I would love to hear more from the horses mouths so to speak. So anyone got one, what do you thinkof them, and would you reccommend for the A cert test ?   Thanks in advance   Trev.
  15. Could always buy a goat to keep the grass short - do they sell them on e bay ???

    New speakers

How true, I have been into hifi / audio / PA systems since I left school and I wouldnt even like to think what I have spent on speakers etc in that time. For years I was trying to get the " ideal " speaker, came very close to it with some KEF's then decided to research building my own. To cut a long story short, i got some plans and built a set of my own TL type speakers. It ended up costing about 500 quid all in by the time i had finished with all the bits but the sound is phenomenal. i have a friend who works in the hifi retail trade and invited him round to have a listen - he was convinced that they were a pair of mega bucks high end jobs as they sounded superb - very gratifying. I still have them 15 years on but the problem is that half a lifetime of time spent in ships engine rooms has taken its toll and those elusive higher frequencies are getting harder to hear now. Oh to be young again..lol.
  17. Superb Chrissie, keep em coming and keep on ( scale ) trucking.............   How about an all terrain VSTOL invention - you know it makes sense.....   Get well soon and keep it up!! Trev
  18. Posted by Big Bandit on 16/11/2011 23:44:36: Posted by trev on 16/11/2011 23:09:09:!   Option 2 - scale ground to air missile system, wouldnt help the model but it would be jolly spectacular............   I could suggest something but it would be illegal and it would get modded pretty fast .   Chris.     Chris :   OUCH ............... I think I can guess............ No malice intended, its just that I pass a Sam missile system every day at work and sometimes you just cant help thinking, well if we fly scale models of the real thing - what if................lol. Anyway, if my pilot skills are anything to judge by it would end up in a tree!   Tim:   Scuse my ignorance here but who is Roy Lever and what did he do ?? thanks trev.
  19. If its just the ball fitting and 2 type approved bolts, try towsure, chances are they will have a suitable and economical replacement - fast delivery as well if they have it in stock. try here have used them loads and they are ok.
  20. Just has to be a market here for a new gizmo. You must have seen that parachute thing for full size light aircraft, where in the event of something nasty happening you just deploy the chute and all is well?? - well whats to stop us fitting one to a model?   Great idea, get into trouble, flick the appropriate switch on the TX, deploy chute and bingo!, down to earth gently and with no drama.   Now, how could we make this work - well the chute would have to be deployed by a servo - now then what if the servo fails.....oooerrr are we back to square one again now !!!!!!!   Option 2 - scale ground to air missile system, wouldnt help the model but it would be jolly spectacular............
  21. hello all.   Well many thanks indeed for that useful advice and input. Yes i do Have BMFA membership and the subsequent insurance cover. As yet I have not joined a club locally as the mainstream interest seems to be powered fixed wing or helos. The electric silent flight category seems to be one that is overlooked which is a shame as I find it really enjoyable and therapeutic and you have to have powered gliders here in Lincolnshire coz its sort of , well ermmm flat !!. Thanks again for the info, at least i know what I am looking for now. i am quite fortunate that where I work is an ex RAF base and the owner has given me permission to fly whenever I like - which is nice!   Thanks again and happy flying. Trev
  22. Hello all.   Have a bit of a newbie question here.   Looking for clarification as most clubs require a BMFA A Cert before allowing solo flight, have a question relevant to this:   I know to fly solo you require a BMFA A Cert, i am clear about that. However, my interest at the moment lies in power gliding which throws up 2 problems: The average power glider weighs at well under 1000g and the minimum to take a A cert is 1000g, secondly - it doesnt have an undercarriage, which again the rules state that one is required. My current plane ( e scale phoenix ) weighs in at 675g and the next model i am looking at getting is around the 790g mark. Is there a seperate exam for powered gliders or does one still have to pass the standard A cert exam on a plane fitting the criteria, before being allowed to fly a PG solo ?? Confused of Grimsby would be most oblidged if you could point me in the right direction here. many thanks in advance and any advice much appreciated. cheers trev.
  23. The Harrier was just simply the best Naval multi role aircraft ever, they were awsome machines and were still way ahead of anything else in the air, I was on carriers when in the navy and still got a thrill every time one took off, that was in the days of the Phantoms and Jags etc. I cannot even begin to guess why the goverment scrapped the Harrier - BIIIG mistake in my opinion..
  24. KC,   yes by all means, it is called an aeroloop, website all info is on there.   Cost is £29.99 plus £6.96 p and p with next day delivery via fedex. It is available only through the website. I can vouch for the quality of the gadget and it has been obviously designed by someone who has had the misfortune to put one up a tree, because its simple and it works.   Any more ???? plse feel free to ask. cheers trevEdited By Tim Mackey on 13/11/2011 18:29:13
  25. Posted by trev on 12/11/2011 04:46:10: Agree about the changes in technoloogy, I have just come back from a 3 decade abstinance and was amazed how things had moved on - my last rc model was driven by either rubber or steam !!!!!! I thought a lipo then was a thing you blew up and slept on..........     Sorry Tim, very rude of me - welcome, this is a great site ! trev.
