  1. "Is there any sound with it or have I got a problem ? " There is sound on it so it looks as though you do need to investigate........ Paul

  5. TOPICAL TIP......... Did you know that they are now doing Viagra in tea bags......... V V V V V V V It may not improve your "performance" but it does stop your biscuits going soggy! Edited By Paul Jefferies on 20/06/2016 08:02:39
  6. I have done a couple of similar installations recently and the TOTAL airbourne installation weighs about 14gm.... It consists of an Orange R410X receiver, a Turnigy TGY-D56LV and a 1S 138mA battery plugged direct into the receiver to avoid the extra weight of a switch. The model is a 30" span Wee Snifter which is basically a freeflighter (over)powered by a Mills .75. The radio operates the rudder only and is only used when and if the model looks like making a bid for freedom. The receiver and servo are both happy down to 3.7v so a 1S battery is fine though you appear to be fitting an elevator as well so you will probably need a battery bigger than a 138mA. The engine run on a Mills is only about a minute but I have safely had five flights out of one battery and there was still plenty left in it. I have six batteries and needless to say I have never used them all! The D56LV has metal gears and is a great little servo. It is important to get the "LV" (Low Voltage) version, there are cheaper and even lighter servos available but frankly their power and resolution are nowhere near as good. Enjoy your second childhood! Paul
  7. I confess it is a long time since I lived in that area but I see that Avicraft are still in business so if you are moving to Orpington I suggest you go into Avicraft (http://www.avicraft.co.uk/), they will tell you all about the local scene. Paul
  8. The danger would be if Balsa cement was used...... that is pure cellulose. Paul
  9. I have not built an Apogee however I would guess that the original would have used a K&B Torpedo 45. I have found this pic of what I think is Brett's model and the motor does indeed look like a K&B 45....... However the prop is an 11x7 3/4 which I think would have been a bit too big for a .45...... Did K&B make a .60 back then?
  10. "Why didn't the BA pilot take evasive action? Ted, during the approach the pilot is very busy with his attention both inside and outside the cockpit. I don't know at what stage of the approach this incident occurred but let's say his speed was somewhere between 120-200 Knots. At these speeds I doubt if the drone, or whatever it was, would have been visible for more than a second or two and even if the pilot did see it and had time to react, 100 odd tons of aircraft simply don't react that quickly. It is widely understood that the airspace in the vicinity of major airports is extremely busy which is why traffic is strictly controlled. I'm afraid the drone was in the wrong....... it shouldn't have been there, no question. Paul
  11. Nobody wants regulation, least of all the regulators because it will be costly and almost impossible to police. However make no mistake, a few reckless, stupid individuals have once again spoiled it for the rest and the authorities (CAA) will have to be seen to be doing something about what is seen to be a threat to air safety. As I said in a previous thread on this subject, I think the BMFA should be in right at the start of any negotiations to make suggestions that we could live with, rather than wait for more draconian measures to be imposed on us. Paul
  12. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VINTAGE-NEW-BABCOCK-BCT-18-DIGITRAN-TRANSMITTER-NIB-NEW-FOR-RC-MODEL-AIRPLANE-/282005762797?hash=item41a8da72ed:g:COgAAOSw5L9XEMIQ Before buying or bidding on anything don't forget to check the seller's feedback. This guy has a big fat zero........ I have seen this one before but no doubt there are others........ Paul
  13. He's also been "selling" some vintage radios, Babcock and Controlair...... 5 of each at £33.99p. They are all different accounts and all have zero feedback. He is obviously fraudulent and I have reported a couple of his listings as such. There's a new one this morning...... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-Very-Rare-Vintage-Glow-engine-Start-10-RC-10cc-/131776430059?hash=item1eae7cbfeb:g:OnwAAOSwz2lXCSBF I wondered how he could have five of them but I nearly "bought" one of the Controlairs until a friend pointed out the zero feedback and then it became obvious . 14. Jan, the East of England is a bit like the Netherlands....... ie. flat! There are a few small slopes and cliffs but really they are not good. The nearest GOOD slopes are on the South Downs, say from Eastbourne Westwards. The South Downs are very beautiful, there are slopes for most wind directions and you can drive to the top of many of the hills. There is an excellent website........ http://www.slopehunter.co.uk/ on which you will find details of slope soaring sites all over the country. Enjoy your hoilday....... Fair winds and happy landings! Paul Edited By Paul Jefferies on 07/04/2016 12:37:49
  15. "Don't bother soaking it in glow fuel. It won't have any effect. I'd use acetone and a toothbrush." I would agree with that 100%. Also, It doesn't look authentic but you can make a good replacement tank from the cut down cap off a 1oz bottle of Zap . Paul
  16. Ah.... the memories, I remembered every note. They don't make 'em like that any more....... 'Nice video. Thanks Mark.
  17. Did you report it to anyone?  If not, why not? Or had you had a "nightcap" before making your posting and toddling off to bed last night ? Edited By Paul Jefferies on 17/03/2016 08:05:40
  18. Pat, yes, Tony was a photograher and also had a modelling agency though I was never sure how serious he was about these pursuits or whether it was just a ploy for meeting lots of very attractive ladies! I don't think his magazine column was very successful and it didn't last long. I wasn't aware of his "lecture tour" that was probably after I left the area. He was certainly an entertaining character, a few years older than me so he must be into his 70s by now.......... I don't remember the Ridge Runner but I do remember the 'Racer and the R/E trainer version called the Ridge Recruit which I think used the same fuselage and tail but a simple wing with some dihedral. Tony never made any of the components himself but contracted the wings and fuselages out. I seem to remember that some of the fuselages had a bit of a dry layup and were a bit fragile. They could have done with a slightly heavier matting and a bit more resin! Edited By Paul Jefferies on 13/03/2016 08:35:09
  19. "Solent Sailplanes" was a guy called Tony Baker who was a member of my club, the Meon Valley Soaring Association. My guess would be that the Ridge Racer dates from around 1975/6. For a brief period Tony wrote a soaring column in one of the magazines but I don't think it lasted very long....... Does anybody remember that or better still, have a copy?  I moved away from that area in 1977, does anybody know what became of Tony Baker? 20. Without a doubt the Irvine .53 would be the engine to use. Back in 1980something I did the original kit review of the Acrowot in RCM&E. In order to test it over the manufacturer's full quoted power range I tested it with an OS .40 and with a Redshift .60. To summarize, with the .60 it was too heavy and overpowered. The .40 had ample power for most flying and the model was altogether "nicer" to fly. If you send me a pm I will send you a scan of the review...... Paul
