  1. Where can I find more info about the Mini Spirit? My Google fu is failing me!
  2. Hi Tom, I've converted my ARTF Balsa Acro Wot to electric, using a Hobby King G46 motor, 15x8 prop, 5s 4000mAh pack and a 70A speed controller. I bought a ESC without a ubec, so I also have a small nimh pack to power the radio. I get 7 or so minutes with about 30% left in the packs. Performance wise, well it used to be powered by an OS 81 Alpha four stroke, and I'd say the electric setup has more power than that. r
  3. Whilst removing the connector from a new 6s pack which arrived without my preferred connector, I hastily grabbed the wire cutters and snipped through both wires at once. The resultant spark was quite something!
  4. Steve, it does quite a bit, although I think all the big names are similar. The line speed tests typically only estimate the line speed from your router to the ADSL DSLAM in the exchange. From there out to the Internet it's down to the quality and quantity of the Internet bandwidth your ISP chooses to provide. Speedtest.net tests not just your ADSl line speed but also your ISP BandWidth. In cases, although people often don't realise it, the limiting factor can be their own WiFi - it's certainly the limiting factor to anything using WiFi in my house, the ADSl is far quicker than my WiFi . A lot boils down to the amount the want to over subscrobe their links by, they don't size the links based on everybody using all of their BW at once, so it's a bit of a guessing game. Pick lower and it's cheaper but runs the risk of making customers unhappy, pick higher and it costs more and you have happy customers. r
  5. Spikey, I know its a bit late now but the best place to check your options is Sam Knows, they run a broadband checker here. Type in your phone number and postcode and they run the same type of speed estimates the broad band companies run. In fact TalkTalk used to use their service internally for their estimates! Worth noting it doesn't test your actual line speed now (like speedtest.net) but it does run the predictions that are useful when buying broadband. r.
  6. Hi, I'm trying to draw up a own design in CAD and was wondering about laser cutting the parts when I'm done. The question I have is, do I need to allow any gap for the cutter. The example I'm thinking of is, say a 3mm longeron running through a former. Should I just make sure the square hole in the former is 3mm x 3mm in the CAD software or is there some allowance that needs to be made? r
  7. Area51, they do. They call it the Bixler, I believe they even have aileron and flap versions now too. I swapped my easystar for a merlin primarily because the tail of the easystar (and clones) does not come off, or at least it didn't in the version I had a few years back. The Merlin tailplane pops off in two halves at the press of a button, which makes its folded up size quite portable. r.
  8. I have a Multiplex Merlin for holiday flying, both the wings and tailplane split into two, so it packs away into the box it came with. They even sell a protective cover for its box with a carry handle, the box measures 11 x 18 x 61 cm. It won't (I don't think) be suitable for an A test because it has no U/C. But it is perfect for away from home flying. r.
  9. Martin, A lot of small businesses (actually, large ones too) use VOIP (Voice over IP - think voice over the internet) for their phone systems these days. You can rent a regional number from Skype or any number of other similar services and have it diverted to any land line, or PC (running Skype) you like. To hack such a system would simply require the username and password for the account with such a service. So it is entirely possible to hack an account and divert the phone to any number you wish. I've no evidence to suggest this is what has happened, or that the comments about the hack above are true or not, I just wanted to explain how it can happen! Wouldn't have happened in the days of a strowger, I can tell you r
  10. Posted by kc on 22/08/2015 20:27:59: Makes you wonder what else they censor. Censoring the moment of death in a video or other media is common practice with the BBC. Documented in their guidelines for all to see, here. Section 7.4.39. Beyond official AAIB use I can't see how it helps anybody else's understanding of the story, to actually see the moment of impact. My thoughts are with the families of the victims of this tragedy. r.
  11. Watching with interest Gothi. The holes in the ribs look about right, well spotted. I often spot things like that right after I've glued the last bit on and it is too late. I'm with Percy on the fourstroke if funds permit! Only minor comment I'd make so far, and this might have been done after you took the photo, but I'd wipe off any of that excess glue around the ribs. It doesn't add anything to the strength of the joint in my opinion, but serves to make things heavier than necessary. Looking good! r
  12. I'd be very interested in seeing a build. I've fancied building a Moth of some form and was just browsing the DB Sport and Scale kits last night!
  13. The MI5 Britten-Norman Islander flying out of Northolt flew over us today, its a common enough sight in skies around our way, but never normally this low. I happened to have my camera to hand so managed to get a shot. And last night I caught this (unknown aircraft), my son was amused by the G-UMMI registration
  14. Levanter3, It is normally possible to recover almost 100% of the contents of an SD card/memory stick, as long as you haven't written anything new to it, and I see you have wisely not done that. Sandisk cards often some with a utility (which work on any cards) on them before use, most people don't notice because they just shove them in the camera and format them, but you can download it from Sandisk here, you'll likely be surprised at some of the stuff it recovers from your card. For example if you once filled it years ago and since then have never quite filled it then the some very old pictures might be recovered. Its free to download and has no adware or any other nasties inside it. r.
  15. I had the same motor on the front of my ARTF Acro Wot for a few years, wonderful motor and plenty of power. I still needed 6oz. of lead up front to balance, but with the 81 pulling it along it was not short of power.
  16. Adrian, Malcom is right, Amazon have a Kindle App for the Mac, you can find it in the App Store here. It remembers your password and stores the books you choose on your Macs HD. Just click the little download icon in the bottom corner of the books cover icon once you load the app. I use this regularly for reading of books offline, there is also a nice iPad & iPhone app if you have those devices.
  17. Hi JohnnyB, I've used various versions of Aerofly on my iMac, it's pretty good. Another option if you have VMware Fusion or Parallels is to run something like Phoenix inside a Windows virtual machine, it doesn't require rebooting or installing windows on your hard disk, it's all self contained inside a special folder on your Mac. This is what I do now, Phoenix runs nicely inside Windows 7 inside VMware.
  18. Hi Richard, Good speaking to you yesterday at Old Warden, thanks for taking the time to chat to me about the RC Snap Dragon, it looks lovely and was very light. I hope Andrew got all the flying shots needed for the magazine and I look forward to its publication.
  19. Thanks for the reminder John, just got mine in a little earlier than last time round which I managed with only minutes to spare. Good to hear progress by McLaren with Jenson saying the car was much improved, so it was clearly more than a lick of paint!
  20. Thanks for the tips gents. I'll have a go at roughing them up and using epoxy. I like the idea of a thin layer of ply over the top. Geoff, I have magnets on both sides of the hatch at the rear, and then a tongue at the front. before the glue failed they were strong enough to hold the whole airframe up by the hatch, so I was a little surprised they failed. Oh well you live and learn! r.
  21. Ben, you can browse by category if you want to just have a shop window browse. But their user interface isn't very friendly. I have this link bookmarked, it shows all things in the Radio Controlled/Aeroplanes category, that isn't marked as new and is sorted by the most recently listed first.
  22. hi, tonight I had a canopy come adrift in flight which was caused by the glue holding the magnets failing. The model has been in use for a couple of years, I wonder if the glue has just aged, is that possible? I believe I used medium cyano, but I'm not 1000%. What is the recommended glue for holding magnets, they are in shallow holes in the bales frame of the canopy, if tha is important? After half an hour of searching, I retrieved the canopy from the under growth, no damage thankfully!
  23. Thanks to Tim for the photos of your balancer. I found this old thread through google. After the last two (scary) maiden flights my previous 'finger tip' balancing has been deemed insufficient, so I've followed your design and knocked up the rough and ready jig you can see below. Many thanks for taking the time to pop some photos of yours onto the forum Tim.
