  1. Prevailing wind has been mentioned and that leads into something else, the runway. Over most of, if not all of the UK the prevailing wind is westerly, and as we prefer to have our backs to the Sun as well the runways tend to be East/West. Or West /East   So the most take-offs and landing practice leads into clockwise circuits, probably at most Club sites. At least most of the ones I have visited.
  2. Wind from the right, left hand "anti clockwise" circuits. Wind from the left, clockwise circuits. Crosswind, by agreement with others and sometimes dependant on the Terrain. Bit nerve wracking when old duffers of any age go against the agreed circuit 'cos they always fly that way.
  3. The Weather must be causing a lot of something South of the Border, two blogs in one month Nice to see someone appreciates the Hurricane though.   No bad Martyn
  4. Be Safe, Stay well. Be Happy.
  5. Two second hand, in need of TLC. So the poll does not,,,, better end like this
  6. A couple of days now since it got better, fingers crossed.
  7. Well now, I do believe you are all aware of the Northern area of the UK so you will not be surprised,,, I have not been flying for a while.   Been taking bricks out of the ex-chimney flues and stuffing the empty space with glass fibre and capping with that nice expanding foam instead.   I need to get the enthusiam for building models back on track.
  8. Posted by Tom T on 07/12/2011 21:06:42: Hi Welcome to the forum..... Don't worry i ask newbie questions all the time.. everyone is very friendly on this forum and are always willing to help @import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css); Confirm.
  9. Keep coming back and keep having fun
  10. Earlier this evening I tried to access it and could not. Ok just now. As others mention, it has been poorly the last few days. IE, Chrome, Firefox, just the same.
  11. Weather! Sleaty of mixed type, rainy snow, rainy hail (snow pellets) all being driven by a good blow. The hills they is getting white too, the up country cars passing with a good layer of snow on them.   Which minds me, that is why I did not go to the AGM of the Scottish Aeromodelers Association this year again. Three and a half to four hours drive each way, no contest, much as I would have liked to go.
  12. Hi Peter, a fair bit of good advice already. I would add one thing up front, find a local or nearly local club and go visit. Don't just try e-mail type contact, go and meet them. Only then after finding out how they help newbies should you purchase any more than a decent model flight sim. Reason for this is it is best to have compatible radio equipment so that Buddy box assistance can be given.   Buddy box is the description of linking two compatible Transmitters together, the Instructor always has the Master and the new pilot the "slave" one. You only only have aircraft control at the instructors discretion, he/she grabs control back quickly when it goes wrong, and then gives control back to you when you are ready again.   Have fun,
  13. Hi Myron, a visit to you is penciled into my diary, much depends on health and the cost of transport next year. Now you know why I suggested getting a nice big runway leccy fenced off. As I live in Fort William getting so far South does cost a fair bit. Stretching the visit comment a bit, as it would co-inside with something else. I have no problem doing runway maintenance, I do it at my home turf.   I am think I have heard of clubs around your area although perhaps not near enough for you, but I like your idea, best keep it as your own club perhaps, till you are happy with the model flying guys attitudes. Plus ensure you keep the final choice, in case of disagreement by the odd one or two.
  14. Posted by Biggles' Elder Brother - Moderator on 04/12/2011 16:53:32: Yeap, methinks he's taken a few "scale liberties" with the wing area! Nice model though!   BEB   PS When I first saw this thread title I thought it was about Tim and I Is it so strange? So did I
  15. I have replaced the fuse twice in mine, not difficult. The biggest problem was sourcing the correct fuse localy to me.
  16. Proper Flying,,wow.   Hi James, I hope you enjoy fixed wing, nowt wrong with two kinds of flying machine.
  17. Provided your machine meets the required specs' IE 9 should load ok. Chrome works best for some sites but my expierience suggests a lot will not do well at all.
  18. A whole bunch of good advice there Tom. Lots of flying, get comfortable with flying in any wind direction and as said, Fly-ins. The B, or in Scotland the Silver is the minimum requirement for public show Pilots. A model or models which the organisers of your target show would find acceptable is often a must. Normal smaller club size is often not what is needed, although sometimes they are accepted.   hould have said "either the B or Silver" is acceptable.Edited By flytilbroke on 01/12/2011 19:39:08
  19. Ochone, Ochone! Second childhood at the flying field Just keep in mind old chap, that when someone asks how far away can you fly that model mister? that the answer is as far away as you can see. Not quite true that, as it's only as far as you can keep control and you have said that you can see a long way. Dot says it is nice to know you both are settling in. The pleasant shopper was not mentioned this time so we hope she is enjoying it all now.
  20. Peter Miller is I would suggest one of the most experienced modellers on here. So although I respect other veiwpoints, as his reflects my own experience of Self Tapper use, I still opt for this. Further observation of modellers with loosening engines, some terminal, the self tappers easily win out for reliability.   Some will snap in torsion when being forced into too narrow a pilot hole, however they do not often break under use of a vibrating model engine and I have never known one to unscrew from our normal glass/nylon mounts. Too large a pilot hole and it is possible for them to have insufficient bite and pull out. I have seen this once.
  21. Posted by James40 on 26/11/2011 07:32:19: I don't want to rub it in but it's 28'C with a 5mph breeze over here............. If only I'd brought some planes with me!!   Here's what I think of that   Or should it be
  22. Worked for me Alan 4, did Steve's link. Anyhoo, does no harm to refresh the info.@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);@import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);
  23. Certainly check first, often we can't even get/buy Lipo's from abroad now as the Airlines consider them dangerous.
  24. Self tappers are the "Bees knees" at least up to a .61 2st. I used to go through the hassle of drill straight, and counter sink for the angle bit of the mount.   I have never "screwed an engine in"
