  1. Good job Peter. This is a seriously attractive model. Looks like the plan will be a keeper when I get my hands on the October issue.
  2. That's certainly a nice looking plane Percy. The classics never go out of style. My plane will be bit more re-imagined than that. I'm turning it into a parasol wing open cockpit plane with turtle deck. If fact, you'll probably need a lot of imagination see the resemblance by the time I've finished. Watch this space. Thanks Onetenor. That's very useful information to have.
  3. Thanks for the support guys. I lost my modelling mojo for a little while there, but it's back now and I'm enjoying planning my new project. It will be an OD(ish) re-imagining of Boddington's Tyro Major. Will share as it happens.
  4. The flying field is adjacent to a swamp which can be seen in the video on the previous page. The vegetation is 7-8 feet high and the field can't be used on the weekend if it rains during the week as the swamp overflows. This is now Jemima's permanent home Some weeks ago, I was flying and the plane ditched in the swamp. On with the gumboots (Wellingtons to you) and an exploration of Amazonian proportions failed to locate the model. It started raining the next day and didn't give up for three weeks. By the time I was able to get back in, there was a massive amount of new undergrowth and an extended search was fruitless. It seems Jemima has become part of the local ecosystem. I wasn't too cut up about losing the model (we scratch builders are a philosophical lot by necessity) but I would like to have used the gear in another plane. Oh well, onward and upward. My new one is almost ready for starting

  6. Lorenz: I'm thinking the same way. Stu: I don't think it was a misprint. In December they said the free plans for Jan were going to be the Storch and Bambina. It appears that the Storch was substituted with Vamoose. Vamoose wasn't mentioned in the Dec issue. The Storch doesn't seem to be mentioned in the Jan issue at all Tom: They used to do larger models in Aviation Modeller International as well. They would strap them to the outside. I have plans for an 84" Tupelov TU 142 and a C130 Hercules.
  7. Thanks Kevin; mystery solved. I'm assuming you're talking about the Feb issue. I won't see that until next month. I don't suppose it would be feasible to spread it over a couple of issues? They could sell twice as many mags

I'm sitting here looking at my December 2016 issue (we get them a bit later here) and on the Next Issue page it says: Free Pro Plan - Feisler Storch To kick off 2017 and spread across a big bumper 2-sheet plan we'll bring you Chris Golds' latest design in the form of this 132" span version of the famous STOL aircraft I must say I was pretty excited about this and was keen to see it was feasible to be my next major project. I picked up my January 2017 issue this morning and found that there is a free plan for Vamoose and Bambina, but no mention of the Storch. Does anyone know what happened here and if we will see this plan in a future issue? I've searched the forums and can't find any mention of it there either.

  16. Hi Cap, They're called pin clamps. I bought mine from Volare Products and I've heard that Indoor Model Supplies has them, but I couldn't find them on their websites. It might be worthwhile contacting them. I think Peck Polymers used to sell them. They have a wooden version here, but I couldn't see the original plastic ones. There are several sites that describe how to make your own including this one. Might be worthwhile looking at RC Groups as well.
  17. Congrats on a beautiful model and the upcoming free plan Mike. Do you think this would make an appropriate 1st low-winger? I'm pretty sure I'm going to be building one. I do like the open cockpit idea BTW. Will there be info concerning an alternative electric version?
  18. Sorry for the late reply Steve. Work has been pretty nuts lately so I haven’t had much time for model-related stuff. Thanks for your advice, that’s very encouraging. I checked the wing in the way you suggested and it felt quite stable so I took it down to the park to do a glide test. Unfortunately, being a bit hesitant about hurling it, I didn’t throw it fast enough to generate lift and it just nose-dived into the grass. The only damage to the plane was - (you’ll never guess) - the wing joiner. Took a day off on the weekend to sort it out. Decided to use telescoping square brass tubes for the joiner. Cut away the covering and cut a square hole in the first two ribs at the required angle. The ends of the outer tubes were cut along the corners for a short way, pinched in and soldered to stop the inner tube sliding right through. The inner was inserted into the outers and the whole assembly inserted and epoxied while the wings were clamped together. Thin ply doublers were epoxied into each rib for reinforcement. All that’s left now is to patch up the covering. The joiner isn’t very long, but with a model of such low wing loading, I think it will be more than adequate. This was far more complicated than what I had intended for this model, but the join is now very strong and alignment is good. It seems a bit of overkill to have a two piece wing on a model of this size, but it will pack down into a much more convenient space and the experience will be useful on future models. While I was at it, I knocked up some new elevators. Just waiting now for some good weather.

  22. I haven't flown it yet. I'm a bit nervous about the wing joiner after discussing it with some of you and my buddy hasn't been available to maiden it for me. I'm hoping to get a bit of time this weekend to look at the wing and hopefully have it airborne soon. Cheers

  24. What about an article on unconventional models (that actually flew) such as annular wing, rotary wing, lifting body etc along with the aerodynamic principals behind them and the flying characteristics of the different types?
