  1. Yup, already have F5 and ACA...... built on perf-board. The design I'm going to re-visit is called Zen V4 who's analogue is a 2 stage single ended valve amp' Pass did a pcb a long time ago and provided the gerbers, but a change of web host and I guess a lack of interest saw them removed.
  2. I got as far as reading the BBC news report on Ken 'I crash out of WRC events' Block doing skids round the Cenotaph and lost interest instantly......
  3. I want to build my mother a hifi amplifier for her 70th birthday BUT after 6 months of on / off struggling with design sw I'm still no closer and the build deadline grows ever closer. The design is fully functional but for DIY Non-profit use only, designed by a chap called Nelson Pass, who's company Pass Labs produce some of the finest amps at any cost...... I've asked on some hifi forums and got what amounts to zero interest. "Do it on perf-board" was the common answer and while I can solder and not make a hash of it, p-board would look horrid in a semi-open / glass topped case. So, Does anyone reading this forum know of some one who could help? PS: I am not after 'owt for nowt' and will happily renumerate within reason.
  4. KiwiKid, there is another youtube docu about Northrop (Jack and the company) and he says on camera "Now I know why....", I'' try and find it to post. I was on the SSUK site the other day reading some Horten history, very dejavu. Both designers fought hard to eliminate bad tip flutter / locking controls..... though it seems that J.N. had less of a time of it. It would have been interesting to see what the flying wing pioneers made of each other's work. Tis another bird added to my 'To See' bucket list, the other two are the P-51 XR 'Precious Metal' and the flying DH Mossie.
  5. I've just seen this, grand-pappy to the B-2.: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2eZjIx_ViOA
  6. I'd level it - personal pride etc.
  7. I've watched vids of that 'Frightening' before. It's interesting to see / watch these vids because you can see the pilots confidence grow. His landing in this vid was proper greasy
  8. Yesterday between 1200 - 1400 we had a Seaking fly over the village and then a Merlin. I always enjoy seeing Seakings, this one must have just been washed cos it was very shiny and proper looking in it's deep blue.
  9. Posted by john davies 8 on 23/05/2016 12:27:16: Having ailerons only on the bottom wing will limit roll rate. I remember many moons ago [ 70's ? ] seeing a souped up single seat Tiger moth with fuel tank moved into front cockpit, more powerful motor that would run inverted and I think ailerons on both wings to improve aerobatic performance. Any one else seen such a machine ? Yes, I've seen the pictures, but cant for the life of me remember which site...... it was a 'race report' that was with some info about the Chilton DW1. There were 3 conversions for racing that had pressure fuel / oil with a tank where the front seat should be - 2 had simple ply or metal covers and the third was a 'proper job' and very clean looking..... but they only had 2 ailerons and one had the pop-out slots removed iirc.
  10. Amelia sprang to mind, as did Doug McHards Wee Snifter (one is based on the other) OR a 'Black Adder' Maybe an Amelia fuz and say..... a blown up 'Junior 60' wing?

Woodward on 16/05/2016 17:47:46: I was told: If you lose a glider at altitude, stick it on it's wingtip and pull in a fair amount up elevator. and watch for the flashes. Yes, when I lost sight of my Sunrise I did that and relocated it from the sun glinting on the wings as they fluttered themselves to bits Bummer
  12. Posted by barry thorp on 15/05/2016 17:11:28: I have been flying some 18 years including flying gliders at a good distance and height away from me , you do not want too take your eyes of these as they can be difficult to find again. But when you are landing how are you able to put the plane down with out looking at the landing strip in advance ? Fly at yourself........ One thing I've not seen mentioned is that a correctly trimmed model (fixed wing) WILL stay flying if you look away, take your thumbs of the sticks or put the TX on the floor (yes, it can be done). Even the most capable aerobatic or '3d' models will fly strait and level hands off - if they dont, they aint much cop! This technique was taught to me by a Nimrod pilot in a Nimrod simulator who flew models and (forgive the name dropping) Martin Bedding (of IMAC fame) who taught me Aerobatics*: Fly over strip and count - one and two and three and four and five, fly back round and count again. On count 'two and three...' is the time to take a quick glance Down and back up, THREE is the center of the strip length. When you get the hang of it, you can look going into and down wind. Tunnel vision can be negated by blinking and looking Ahead of the model. I was told: If you lose a glider at altitude, stick it on it's wingtip and pull in a fair amount up elevator. and watch for the flashes. *I can still see in my minds eye the china-graph drawings of Position / View and practice flights / debriefs after 30 years , I'll draw them up and post them if ya likes?
  13. Built five Warmonger vintage combat models to completion inside a week. I went to a party on the Friday night, came home Saturday morning very smashed and noticed I'd built them with the asymmetry the wrong way round!

You may well have a legitimate complaint with regards to customer service, but the illustration that you gave, indicating that the profit on such a sale would have paid the shop's rent for a week and fed the owner's family displays a lack of understanding of the economic realities faced by bricks and mortar shops. Indeed, first you have to engage your customer to gain confidence and a sale - it's the Repeat custom that adds up. I aint gonna post my C.V. for you delectation, but I've worked in 'retail' and for the last 15 1/2 years run my own business making people their 'dream surfboards'. A board = 50% material cost, 40% facility overhead / tax / vat and 10% in my pocket. If I garner that the customer doesn't know what he / she want's, I'll take him to a 'big boy' shop and sell him / her one of their boards...... which they bring to me to be fixed when needed Because I gave them what they want, be it my product or someone else's. Quite a few of my 'customers' - which I treat as good friends - come back some time later knowing exactly what they want and really spurge, some even bring their kids to me for their first board, they get to come in my shape bay and watch 'the magic' etc etc blah de blah and one 'child' has brought their child to me. I have people turn on my doorstep as I'm leaving to go surf.. 'Can you fix this ding, when will it be done?' "Hey buddy, it'll be done in 20mins.... I'll put the kettle on" served with a dirty great smile. I could charge them £15 like the big boys, I tell em "Pay next time, but don't save yer dings up ' There's a saying containing eggs and another about choirs...... I'm sure you know em Peace out brah.
  15. Great subject! I lived in Elgin, Scotland* as a kid and Shacks based at Lossiemouth would overfly my house daily. One night Three flew over heading East (always a worry..... East 17!) in a big hurry and LOW enough to hear the rivets groaning AND see exhaust flame. Nowts ever come close to the sound of 12 RR Griffons wide open - nore the sound and sight of 8 Bucc's doing the same 20 mins later!   Edited By D. Woodward on 14/05/2016 16:43:37

John *rant on* I was really happy when I walked into my LMS with £650 in cold hard cash trying to ignite my wallet BUT when I saw the 20 sheets (in total) of 'wood' and the engines priced £40 over the odds...... I left. Person behind the counter didn't even say 'Hello Sir, Can I help you?' The other customer picked up a gallon of fuel, plonked it on the counter, waggled his card at 'shop-keep' and he didn't even say 'Thank You' post sale! Had he done that - offer help / say thank you - I would have spent money in there - as a 'returnee' it would have been a LOT....... It wasn't a wasted trip though, walking past a modern day pop-shop I spotted a semi-classic Technics Pre / Power amp combo and a really nice pair of 'mini-monitor' speakers, which after a demo to prove working order were mine. That £340 (or more) could have been in the models shops till - a weeks shop rent and a few meals on his families table. They say manners cost nowt, the lack of cost him dear. I got a one from the top of the range amp I'd drooled over as a 20-something and my god-daughter was given the speakers..... as 'thanks' Brygen (god-daughter) helped me set up a paypal account and ordered my BOT for me from SMC. *rant off* Oooh - please do tell where the profit on a £340 sale will pay the shop rent for a week and some meals for the owner's family. With rents that low there might be more LHS survivors. Even with today's discount prices getting back into r/c aeromodelling is expensive (trad build it yourself) ranging to stratospheric. I may only have been wanting to buy a pair of control horns @ £2 BUT I might have been wanting a CARF 100cc Edge 540, DA100, Pipes, Radio etc etc. So, either 30p profit or £100's........ Every Little Helps from top to bottom being a shop owner but to lose that sale through Zero basic customer service is unforgivable.

  18. I'm not sure about the sound (I've never heard a Napier Sabre irl), but boy-o-boy it's got that 'Heavy Metal Aura' in spades.
  19. Hi Richard, After a quick read up on the build threads I see .35 two stroke / .40 four strokes mentioned. Don't worry about a four stroke being up-side down, it will still blow oil out the crankcase breather - figure out where you'd like it to drip from, exit the pipe from there and you'll be able to get your after run oil shot in there easy too. There was only one mass produced model engine that had a proper 'wet sump' - **LINK** Notice the really scary price tag! Good luck with your build.
  20. Posted by Mark Kettle 1 on 10/05/2016 12:31:35: D.W - is your wing for a glider 'Bird of Time' ? (took me age's to figure out BOT) Yes Sir, Dynaflite Bird of Time
  21. Just got back from putting a couple of hours on my own design 'Hay-lee Fever B' - log-book shows 44hrs so far this year, 3,681 hrs in 12 years. BoT progress is 'stately' - or as British Rail used to say: We're getting there! **for some reason the pic wont show   Edited By D. Woodward on 10/05/2016 18:06:49 Edited By D. 23. Thats a good looking model Mark, the silver looks very 'alloy'. My 2nd pair of BoT wings: Poundland CA / 'Ever Build 502' pva (£2 / 500ml / local hard-ware store) Edited By D. Woodward on 10/05/2016 01:03:50
  24. Posted by kc on 09/05/2016 15:36:17: Height limits are height above ground level aren't they? Maybe helicopters show height above sea level? So perhaps that accounts for the discrepancy? My signed copy of Sqn Ldr Fred Priors* 'Aeolus' quotes 60m / 200ft above ground, all my other books -including a Dutch book - say 196ft. I asked Fred about this many years ago and he said 'above sea or ground and it's been that way for a long time'. I'm getting a feeling this is also the max model glider tow-line length for FIA classes as well? I know from basic geometry that my 10ft Cody War (wood and ripstop) is safe in any wind on a combined bridle / line length AND line drag (500lb test) of 250 ft. When the bridles incorrect, it's just as dangerous as a model plane or a badly flown stunt delta or foil. Good on the pilot for using his brain, his actions have lead to more than one person being educated and inspired.
