  1. That does seem to point to a problem with the old engine. Have you had a chance to strip it for examination?   The only general problem I'm aware of with LAs is the back plate screws occasionally coming loose and causing an air leak.
  2. As I recall, it was a MAP plan and I built mine in the mid 70s with an Enya 09 and McGregor single channel with quick blip throttle - soon superceded by a 2 channel Sanwa proportional outfit.  I think the design had been around for awhile - the "old hands" all recommended it,   Scary thought, I bet all those old buffers were younger than I am now!Edited By Martin Harris on 04/03/2011 22:28:26
  3. Re. the thread title, I've never tried it but I find a scalpel works well....
  4. I'd guess that entitles me to put one up then:   Not dissimilar to Gary's posting but designed for RC
  5. Looks rather like a KK Snipe - I built one for my Merlin when I was about 12...
  6. Sounds like most predominately fixed wing clubs adopt a very similar approach to ours which is that while we don't actively encourage heli flying we allow it with the agreement of those present in informal slots or occasionally in mixed sessions if the pilots are happy to do so.. We also try to encourage "hoverbatic" fixed wing flyers to do likewise when it's busy...
  7. The k doesn't have any relarion to kilo so I'd suggest the suggested krpv would be better as rpV However, I expect kv makes perfect sense in the originator's language...it's now accepted worldwide and has a well known and clear definition.  As for WOT, it means Wide Open Throttle which doesn't actually equate to full speed. It simply means the"tap" whether of the electrical or carbettor variety is fully open (with brakes on at the end of the runway this can be zero speed) so we're immediately clouding the issue by suggesting an alternative, which can be misinterpreted, to a widely accepted and unambiguous term!  With any technology you do need to spend a little while learning the accepted terminology so I can't really accept that the examples quoted are "daft" when they are quite specific.  Daft ones would be those that made things unclear by being poorly defined and ambiguous, which these particular ones aren't.Edited By Martin Harris on 02/03/2011 13:36:33
  8. One of my clubmates built a Culver Dart and covered it in pink Solarfilm - we christened it (or him?) the Culver Tart....
  9. I find blue foam sands well as long as you always move the sanding block inone direction - i.e. lift it between strokes. Just don't inhale the dust!
  10. And mightn't it be significant, BEB, that the "interference" source transmission could be at considerable atlitude while the conventional model is being controlled from the ground?   ...and to expand on Leccy's point, I think any "opposition" from conventional modellers is nothing to do with FPV being seen as different, "not what we do" or any sort of blind prejudice - indeed I would assume that the majority of us wouldn't be averse to having a go ourselves if it wasn't such a considerable financial commitment to get started in what might be a fringe interest. The main concern is of an irresponsible operator causing a high visibility incident that could have negative consequences for the established hobby.  Couldn't happen?  One of my clubmates has had to virtually give up on his other hobby of pistol shooting, at which he was at a high standard, as a consequence of blanket regulation post Dunblane.Edited By Martin Harris on 27/02/2011 14:21:16
  11. The entire range of OS and clones up to the ASP/SC 180 use the same bearings for the camshaft so making a universal one should be straightforward!   I knocked up an expanding mandrel a few years back   ...dimensions aren't particularly critical - the lip needs to be small enough to go in the space behind the bearing and marginally larger than the bearing inner diameter. The expanding rod is simply a piece of 3mm studding heated to red hot and shaped into a blob with a small hammer - then turned as a reverse cone to expand the puller end. You can lock it in place with the nut if you feel the need...   Hasn't let me down yet!Edited By Martin Harris on 26/02/2011 15:00:15
  12. Chris,   What concerns me as a conventional flier is this sort of statement:   +27dBm typical output power : The rated output in real world terms. Dbm can be used to calculate range capabilities of each component. From the figure +27dbm we can determine this is a 500mw transmitter. Mw is another term used to state the power of the transmitter. To be legal on the 2.4 Ghz band in the Uk the maximum permitted power of the transmitter is 10mw.     Although it clearly states the legal position, is this typical of the equipment used in the UK? What power output video transmitters are popular with your law abiding members?
  13. Chris said, "If sensible frequency controls are used at clubs, which has alway been the case, then no one should be affected."    Trouble is, from what I've read, the rogue model wasn't being operated from the club where the models were affected. With the range of an illegal power link it could be being operated from anywhere within a mile and a half (or maybe more?) radius of the legitimate operation.Edited By Martin Harris on 25/02/2011 23:16:22
  14. This is the scenario that's worried me with non-hopping systems.   I wonder which systems the affected models were using? Is this swamping occuring over the whole 2.4GHz spectrum or does it only affect (as I think may be the case) a number of adjacent channels?
  15. Posted by ken anderson. on 25/02/2011 19:20:56: go on there martin - good stuff....   ken anderson ne...1. Oh no - I've sunk to new depths and hit rock bottom - I seem to be on Ken's wave length....
  16. Posted by ken anderson. on 23/02/2011 15:01:41: one of my friends who go's diving as a hobby was telling us that aprox 2-3 miles off shore was like a car park...on the sea bed...for once away from land they had dumpted the car shell's overboard...... !!   ken anderson ne....1.  What could be more natural than shells on the sea bed?  ...eel tracks?  sea vee joints? Were they all old C registered ones?  Were the seals OK?    P.S. Any news on the last 2 needed?  Shall I get 'er indoors to join ....  on second thoughts, perhaps not!     Edited By Martin Harris on 25/02/2011 17:03:23
  17. Posted by Danny Fenton on 25/02/2011 15:14:53: Failing that you are into getting colors mixed either by a paint factor or B and Q as Martin has alluded to. I take it you want the colors accurate?  Sticky subject that. If you paint a model in the original paint from the real thing it's reckoned to look wrong at smaller scale so do you go for the authentic colour or the perception of it?  I'd prefer the second option but this really is a case of it being in the eye of the beholder.
  18. Never try to catch a falling scalpel. ....and move your feet away from the bench smartly while resisting the urge to catch it.  ...and while we're on scalpels, how can something so shiny hide so effectively? ...and from my personal collection of scars - never put direct pressure on the blunt edge of the blade because it won't be the blunt edge!
  19. B&Q testers are great value - just over a couple of squids for 250ml I did try their colour scanning/matching service on some textured covering of unknown origin (not Solartex) and although they got close it didn't really match. That may be more due to the textured nature giving inconsistent results though.  I've tried spraying with some success thinning it 50/50 with water but brushing seems to work almost as well with the semi-matt finish - mostly on 1/12 scale combat models fuel proofed with acrylic glassing varnish   - where the finish isn't quite as important    but I thought it looked quite good on an electric Nijhuis Mossie which I sprayed.
  20. Sure you've got the right plan, Andy? Looks more like Thunderbird 1 to me!
  21. Save money on personalised number plates - simply change your name by deed poll to something like AB09CDE (or whatever your car number is...)
