  6. My club had Tony and Colin Hammond to talk at our club night last night. Colin bought along his 17ft Lancaster and his Mitchell. Tony showed us progress on a couple of up and coming projects (including the RCM&E FW190 for this years plan) as well as detailing how he goes about a design, and fitting it in with the rest of his busy schedule!   A thoroughly entertaining evening that I can recommend to any other clubs thinking of doing something similar! Looking forward to seeing them both fly at our scale day in June.
  7. Peter - I just did it from 1st fitting, so guess as a precaution.   The other thing is to make sure you are screwing the threads into the manifold far enough, as many turns as possible! A friend bought a 2nd hand 82a that hadn't had this done and must have suffered the same fate as yours a few times as the threads were shot. Tried helicoiling etc but to no avail. Had to buy a new top end in the end which made it rather expensive as a 2nd hand buy!   So basically, its a good idea to sort it before you do any long term damage to the engine. The sealant is a good 1st effort to doing this I guess.
  8. Poor Steves model is no more though. Engine cut during a prop hang, which never ends well Edited By Ed Darter on 06/05/2011 12:39:54
  9. Love flying mine - just don't fly it often enough! Photos of it in my album if you are interested.....Edited By Ed Darter on 05/05/2011 13:18:09
  10. not had problems on my 82a, but I did as you are suggesting and ran it up to temperature, then tightened the nuts up once more.
  11. whatever happened with this i the end BEB? I may have missed it but don't think I heard about a maiden flight or anything...   Cheers Ed
  12. I haven't got a DSX9, but do have a PCM9XII with a spekky module and have an AR9000 in my Spitfire. Didn't have the issues described here though. Is it a model memory previously used on a different model ? Have you checked to see if there is a throttle curve programmed in?
  13. I think timbo mentions temperature fluctuations in one of his stickies, which it why storage charge is less than full charge...... to give the battery a bit of head room.
  14. What kind of flight times are people getting with this model now everyone has had them for a few months? 5 mins on 2200s mentioned which seems a bit low but not sure if that's the norm.... Thanks Ed
  15. Thanks guys, think I will play with flight times until I am putting a true 80% back in! Mike, your table could prove to be very accurate wrt the rapid drop off towards the end. 45 seconds extra flying seems to be the difference between the battery having 20% left and nothing! This doesn't correlate with the consumption figures for the first 4 mins of the flight.
  16. Even bullet connectors are of variable quality. Look at the cage on the male side and some are made of material slightly thinner than tin foil. I used to use them though but was careful about where I purchased them from. Briefly dabbled with ec3's but didn't like them at all. Same basic problem as described above plus the housing were made of chocolate and once the bullets were inserted they came out again VERY easily. That was probably more down to then being copies though. Have now gone to xt60s and love them. A decent housing to hold when making or breaking the connection and don't rely on that thin metal cage for the contact. Have bought from several suppliers and all of equal quality. Apparently most of the manufacturers are going to them but how true that is I am not sure.
  17. I would say the next action has to be with the safety officer & committee.... and quickly! I'm our club safety officer and I hate this kind of thing but it has to be dealt with quickly, before someone gets hurt. One thing though, depending on the club rules you may be able to have him grounded / suspended from flying without it having to be raised to the BMFA in the first instance. We certainly can at our club. Gives you a chance to show him that the club are trying to be reasonable about it before taking it that step further. Thankfully we have had very few instances such as this over the years and none that I know of that have had to go to the BMFA. Ed
  18. Having put a few flights on my Starmax panther I have noticed something slightly strange about my charger. It's a raytronic c60, identical to an emperor pro in fact. Now I am using 1600mAH batteries and decided not to take more than 80% from them to preserve them. So initial flights were limited to 4 minutes. When I plugged the batteries into the charger it said they were indeed down to 20%. Yet when the charge was completed it had only put back 800mA back in..... even allowing for some inaccuracy in the initial capacity estimate when you plug the battery in to charge that's quite a discrepancy. So do I ignore the initial estimate and up the flight time until I am putting about 1250mAH back in? Must confess I have extended flight time to 4.5 mins and initial capacity estimate was still the same. I guess this is not much more than a guess based on pack voltage but confirmation of my logic would be appreciated! Thanks Ed
  19. Yes, I have killed a couple of high capacity tx packs very quickly by using the standard Jr 70mah wall charger, they don't like a low charge rate. I now charge my tx eneloop pack at about 1a as above. Have had to fiddle with the delta peak setting on the charger a bit but one year on and all is well (touch wood!)
  20. Oh dear tony must say I am loving the Starmax one and the slightly larger lander one is appealing don't overland do spares?
  21. You beat me to it BEB....   and being 2.4Ghz does not preclude kit from going faulty over its lifespan or directly out of the manufacturing facility either. Everything made in a factory by anyone anywhere will have a percentage that either go duff in use or straight out of the box.   2.4Ghz is not a silver bullet to every radio issue ever seen but as a breed us modellers seem to be assuming so..... 22. yeah - the Phase 3 F16 is what attracted me to EDF in the first place. It does tick nearly all the boxes in that its duration is good and uses batteries I have already, but everyone seems to have one and its EPS - would prefer an EPO model I think but wouldn't discount it purely on that. Its still one of the options though and I have to confess, cheap and fun!   Also still mulling over the flyfly Sabre! other end of the scale I know!
  23. ok - sorry BEB...  Edited By Ed Darter on 19/04/2011 12:53:44
  24. yeah - looking at the Alpha again. The Starmax one looks nicer though, but I think performance would not be as good.   uugghh..... back to trawling web pages for an EDF that ticks all the boxes! I'm just a bit too fussy!!
