Lots of old designs seem to rely on taking a small forest and reducing it to the shape of an airplane using razor plane and sanding blocks... Top of the fuselage? Inch thick slab. Bottom? 3/8 slab. Corners? 1/2" triangle. Cowl area? Blocks, great big ones! Now get sanding! Maybe I need to brush up on my planking skills. My recent Spitfire built was built along the same lines. I am sure the designer who shall remain nameless has shares in a balsa company. Of my £100 worth of balsa I reckon about a quarter of it ended up on the floor in shavings.
  2. I have always used glow engines, mainly four strokes as I like the sound and find they are what I call flying field friendly. They are all fitted with my own design on board glow systems so are easy to start. I have been interested in petrol engines as several of my club mates use them but they do seem quite noisy even when fitted with so called quiet silencers fitted. I can see the appeal when it comes to running costs versus glow fuel, so I suppose in the end it comes down to what you are happy with.
  3. I have a spray bottle of water and washing up liquid mix which I spray on and then wipe off with kitchen towel. takes a couple of minutes and my model ends up gleaming.
  4. Many thanks for your help. Regards Richard
  5. Dont give up. I was made redundant at 61. I thought that was my lot. I worked hard at getting back and within a short period had secured another post with a better company. Retired at 65.
  6. Malcolm. Thanks for the offer but I doubt any parts would fit as the 40 FSR is a two stroke engine. Richard
  7. I am trying to find a prop drive washer and collet for an OS 40 FSR. OS part No is 24908009. I know parts for these engines are hard to find so I am wondering if anyone has an engine that they want to sell for parts. I believe the 45 FSR uses the same drive washer. Thanks in anticipation, Richard.
  8. Space is the problem. I was brought up on free flight and control line, progressing to R/C as the budget allowed. I have compromised by building a free flight design and fitting lightweight radio gear so that I can use it at my field. I realise that this does not sit well with FF purists but the space in my area is not there for real FF. Like others I still love to watch the FF scale at the Nationals and am amazed at the sheer skill of the builders and their nerve at letting something so perfect fly off on its own.
  9. Posted by Tony Richardson on 27/08/2020 02:13:38: Now thats a pretty aiirplane Richard, what are the specs? Hi Tony, the wingspan is 73 inches and overall length is 50 inches. I am not sure what the weight should be as there was no indication on the plan, however having built a lot of models and building quite light it feels about right. I will weigh it at some point.  The Cof G came out about 3/4  of an inch forward from as stated on the plan  which should be OK. I realise I spelt it incorrectly as a Stop Starlet and not a Stolp Starlet as should be Edited By Richard Acland on 27/08/2020 17:21:55
  10. My lockdown special completed at last. A stop starlet built from The Nexus plan. SC 70 FS power. Heavily modified and strengthened. Still looking for a suitable pilot, and hoping the wind drops sometime soon for a maiden flight.
  11. when lockdown started I decided to have a rifle through my plans drawer. I have an interest in "Home Built" aircraft and have previously built models off a Pietenpol Aircamper and an Armar Gorrion. These are both parasol wing designs, so when I found a plan of a Stolp Starlet I decided to give it a go. Now five months later I am nearing completion. I have to now make the wing struts, finish decorating the wing and find a suitable pilot. I have had to modify the plan a lot as certain areas were very weak. For example the wing had no shear webs or cap strips shown on the plan and the tailplane structure was very flimsy. Power is an SC 70 fs. I have added some pictures but have no idea how to get them in the right order. Edited By Richard Acland on 19/08/2020 12:07:14 Edited By Richard Acland on 19/08/2020 12:11:38
