  1. Yep if it's all damp and rusty then replace them all, but had a new member recently who's resurrected a 20year old Flair Cub, we put in a new rx battry, 35 MHz Rx programmed into his MPX 3030 buddied to my old 3030, took a little while to get the PAW (49 I think) to spring into life and it then flew around just fine. But if you've never flown before then getting an experienced modeller to check it out and fly it is the way to go and if you can get a radio set compatible with his then he'll be able to buddy you up so you can have a go without turning it into matchsticks. Had a lucky escape with an old vintage model though, radio was all fine, but when the whole rudder came loose we were lucky to get it down in one piece.
  2. Yep was instructing a clubmate with one the other day, also had another on a Hobbyking Bixler Easystar copy, hard to put a finger on it but the Easystar flew much better.
  3. Nigel, my other radio is Multiplex M Link not a Spektrum DSMx, plus.some of the.models are older micro models with built in receivers so not easily replaced.
  4. The 3.4v was on the tx display, looks like the corroded wire had higher resistance and as it warmed up the resistance increased. Both batteries were fine when plugged into a charger and discharged at 0.5A.
  5. There's another video from the front which shows the number plate, its a 2014 Range Rover Sport diesel, note it was on personalised plates. Video does show a pool fire underneath the vehicle, so most likely a fuel leak onto a hot surface. Video also shows two handheld extinguishers nearby so somebody had a go at putting it out.
  6. Had the back off this morning and pulled the power lead, I'd modified the original battery box lead by adding a servo plug so I could use a standard 4 cell flight pack, the lead was showing signs of -ve wire corrosion, so I made up a new one and it seems to have fixed the problem, left the tx switched on and voltage was stable with no shut off. When I get chance I'll leave it switched on for a couple of hours before using it again. Will still look at the radiomaster tx as an alternative, but I really done need another tx 😀 thanks for all the comments
  7. Battery is cold, haven't checked the regulator, but on first switch on with a freshly charged battery, it will stay on for a couple of mins, leave it a while and it will repeat, but if switching on within 30secs it shuts down very quickly. I initially thought it was the battery, but it does the same with another pack and both perform fine on a 0.5A discharge. Quite fancied one of the new radiomaster pocket radios but they don't do it in a DSM2 compatible format.
  8. Denis the battery plugged in shows 5.5v, is OK for a couple of mins then drops to 3.4v and then the Tx shuts down. Put the battery on my discharger at 0.5 amps and it it will stay above 5v for ages. I've run the Dx6i for the last 15 years on rechargeable batteries and it's been fine. Looks like I'll have to investigate the Radiomaster Tx.
  9. Possibly not, but what it would have done is kept the other cars around the fire cool so they don't catch fire and fuel didn't then leak from them. There's actually more hydrocarbons stored in one of these car parks than there is inventory on a small offshore oil facility, which would have a full fire and gas detection system, sprinkler system and drain segregation to prevent a pool fire from spreading. But it's a cost/risk analysis and if the regulations don't require it (because the risk is so low?) then why would the developer fit it. The personnel fire escapes would have been through fire doors and then a segregated stair well.
  10. Paul, getting back to your original question here's a comparison between phosphor bronze and brass https://www.napenggworks.com/basic-points-of-difference-between-brass-and-phosphor-bronze/. Basically phosphor bronze is much harder than brass so more suited to a bearing material.
  11. My old DSM2 Dx6i seems to have started to play up, a couple of years ago I changed out the battery box so I could plug in a rechargable 4 cell Nimh pack all had been fine, but now after the radio has been on a short while (couple of mins) it beeps low Tx battery and then shuts off a few seconds later. It's not the battery as I've tried 2 and they both hold up well on a 0.5A discharge, so it's obviously some electrical component failing. Fortunately it didn't happen while I was in the air. But while this wasn't my main Tx I do have several models with DSM2 receivers (inc some micros) so what's the option for a DSM2 tx these days, take a chance on another 2nd hand radio (old JR maybe) or maybe a multiprotocol one like the Radiomaster etc. Anybody used one of these with DSM2 receivers.
  12. Not sure if the airports fire crew actually responded, the interviews seemed to all be with local firecrews, who noted it wasn't safe to enter so decided to fight it externally. Not surprising when it was assumed that there were around 1500 cars in the car park, lets say 1200 were ICE, each with 25 litres on board, that's a lot of hydrocarbon vapour which could ignite in a fireball at anytime. I've seen a still from a CCTV that seems to show an SUV (Range Rover/Land Rover/) on fire not in a parking space, so probably caught fire as it was being driven in the car park, leak from a high pressure fuel injection system onto a hot exhaust maybe.
  13. Or https://newsroom.toyota.eu/toyotas-advanced-battery-technology-roadmap/ Also interesting article in the Telegraph on Goldman Sachs review of BEV battery developments, https://www.telegraph.co.uk/business/2023/10/10/world-ev-battery-revolution-through-eyes-goldman-sachs/, basically the technology is developing at a rapid rate, improvements not only in battery tech but also lithium refining will see energy density increase while charging times and costs will tumble. Bit annoying that one of the new break throughs, developed at Imperial College, first factory is being built in South Korea.
  14. You can bind multiple receivers to one model memory, but as far as I'm aware you can't reassign channels on an rx.
  15. Tip fins too small and.not rearward enough, they need to extend to at least the rear of the.elevons and not extend forward of the leading edge.
  16. The electronics also control, the fuel injection, ignition, temperatures, catalytic converters, particulate filters etc etc and they log any faults, so the "mechanic" can plug it in and see if the car has developed any faults. Big problem on many modern diesels is the EGR valves getting clogged up if they are only driven on short journeys. My ICE car has already been in for an EGR cooler safety recall, apparently they could leak and cause a fire in extreme cases. Years ago before all these fancy electronics a workmate had a Lancia Beta, the indicators had a mind of their own, she took it back to the dealer several times and eventually they just shrugged their shoulders and said we don't know what the problem is............................
  17. All depends on how.good the motor wiring is at stopping magic smoke leaks 😀
  18. For context my mates 2016 66,000 mile Audi A6 V6 is going in to cure a water leak next week, apparently a valve between the cylinders, quoted 9 hours labour, I won't tell you the quoted cost but it's a bit eyewatering. But we probably had the same.when common rail fuel injection, ABS and modern electronics (canbus etc) came in requiring additional technician training. But as in all things you can now buy a gadget that plugs into the OBD socket which will read out individual cell health, just like we can check our lipos.
  19. Basically yes, the penalty now is more weight and cost. I've done this in reverse, used an existing motor that was larger than required, but I had it so why not.
  20. There's also another group who see a speed limit as a target, and will excessively accelerate and brake to hit that limit. We have a bend on our housing estate near a playground, cars used to wizz round so they put in some speed humps, now some accelerate between the humps and then hit the brakes to slow down, actually a 20 mph limit here would have been more appropriate.
  21. Got an email from deceased clubmates email, but it was signed by his widow asking me if I could do a favour for her, not unusual as she had used his email previously, as I was out I replied to say I'd call later. Then got another email saying she was in hospital and it was her nieces birthday, could I buy an Apple Pay card and she'd then reimburse me,...........,.....
  22. The 20mph limit only applies to.roads which were previously 30mph, i.e. Roads with street lighting with no speed repeater signs. So basically built up areas, a lit carriage way with say 40mph repeater signs is still 40 mph, if local councils want to revert a specific road to 30mph then they can fit 30mph repeater signs.
  23. As far as Ie aware the speed limits on.motorways and main trunk roads haven't been reduced by 33%, so possibly the last few % of the slowest part of the journey has, which will be a negligible affect on the overall.average.
