  3. Hi toto, Good choice for a winter build, I have 3 of lindsays models under my belt .they all build really well and are as said above great flyers. My favourite being the skywriter that lindsay designed a few years back, flys brilliant. I Look forward to following along your build.
  4. Last out with the Tucano, middle of the pack with the Ballerina but first out with the SkyWriter. Mine will have a slightly different setup: 4 cells instead of 3. Mostly because I have both 2200mAh and 3300mAh packs, but also because that lowers the amperage, which implies a smaller ESC. A 500W output can be generated with a 800kv motor (on 4S) driving either a 12x6 or 11x7 propeller. A Turnigy Aerodrive 3542 800kv and a Turnigy AE45 ESC play well together and generate about 500W with an APC-E 11x7 propeller. Looking at the drawing there is ample space for both types of battery, but not that much possibility to move the pack back or forth. Better make the battery tray so it can accept both sizes: New techniques to be tried out with this build: making panels and rivets. I have never glassed a model. laminating curves. Shown on some Ballerina build blogs. I will try to to both tail surfaces and wing tips. I think that will save some weigth while increasing strenght. But first I have to create a shoppinglist for the Balsa Cabin. Lucas Edited By Lucas Hofman on 28/11/2016 15:01:25
  5. Here is my placeholder blog - I've not started, I have a KF3 build in progress to complete first (blog to follow at some point) - but I have bought the Skywriter plan and here are some taster pictures. Here's the shed with the KF3 tailplane on the board: And here is the gorgeous hunk of metal I hope to bolt to the front - a brand new OS52 Surpass... Offering it up to the plan suggests some modifications are going to be needed in the nose area, I'll have a think about that when I make a start properly:
  6. Well with Dawn Flyer now completed and flying with just some details to write up it has been time to get the crayons out over the last few weeks and get started on the next design project. Its been a while since I did a biplane so this was top of my list but wanted to keep it relatively compact and something sport but with some scale like character drawing inspiration from a number of full size but keeping the build relatively straight forward. The end result is the drawing below for a 48" span model for a 300-400 watt system or equivalent i/c motor. The drawings are now complete and ribs and formers ready to go away for laser cut parts to be produced. Always interesting at this stage to get some feedback so let me know what you think. Lindsay
  7. Hi all Well Santa was good to me. A plan and a lovely pack of wood to boot. Mrs Low Pass has been a real trooper! Will keep you all posted on progress. I expect to use a 4 Stroke so some mods will be required to the plan. Best wishes to all fellow MB2017 builders. Peter
  8. So I have plans, wood and the critical item - straining fluid so I had better get started. The CNC pack I had yesterday still has the fuzz cut short so better fix that to start with.
  9. Can't fault the choice you've made, looking forward to building it and seeing the variety others come up with. Two wings to build, i like that Don't like building the fuzz usually, but this one has some nice touches to make it more interesting. John
  10. Hi, I enjoyed building the Ballerina last year. As a notoriously slow builder I found following others progress made me build quicker! Slow? well 31/2 years to build Peter Millers RF4 is slow! I am by nature a scratch builder, start with a heap of materials, drawings sharp scalpel blades etc and I'm off...slowly! I've been building models since I was 12 and now HMG pays my wages! I thought I would start with the tail group because it is easy and I'm considering closed loop linkage for the rudder so having the tail group to hand should help with the positioning with the holes for the closed loop wires. Nicked the laminated LE idea using 6 lams of 1/16th balsa around a MDF former.
  11. Hi all, Seeing as though there's a couple of 'thoughts at this stage only' threads started, I might as well get mine going too. There's nothing much to post yet but this post is like the first kick after the whistle - the first play to get things started. I've got a few ideas but they are still bumping around in my head. I'll post them when they start making sense to me and I've got a little bit more time! Rosco
  12. A 10% discount is available on plan/woodpacks by quoting SKY10 from myhobbystore. Thanks Abby and Beth
  13. When the preview announced the Skywriter biplane as Jungmann-esque I was sorely tempted. However the plans, nice as they are, are nowhere near a Jungmann. But on closer examination, I saw that the wing shapes, tail moments etc. were very close to those of the Hawker Fury. So I decided to draw up a Hawker Fury fuselage and tail to fit the wings, aerodynamics and construction principles of the Skywriter. Hope it flies as well as the Skywriter is said to...
  14. This is a heavily modified Skywriter (lightened construction, change wing profile to your usual NACA3414). I regret having sold it but the buyer would not let me buy it back.
  15. I will not (yet) be modelling the modifications Berntsen made to LN-SNI, so it will be an S-9 in disguise. The first steps were getting the drawings on paper at 110% size. Since I could not get the large plotter to co-operate I hade to print at A3 and patch the tiles together. The printer is not completely accurate, so not everything lines up perfect. but it will have to do. Next is finding out what is needed, and what of that I have in stock and what has to be bought. I always create a bill of materials for this. It gives me overview since you need to study the plan well to make one. If anybody wants to do this too feel free to copy the attached document. For the last scratch builds (Ballerina and Skywriter) I purchased about 50% extra from the Balsa Cabin, and it turned out nearly all wood needed is already in place. 16. Hello everyone Great idea for a Mass Build. I enjoyed building Pete Miller's Ballerina, and Lindsay Todd's Skywriter and Renaissance as part of previous Mass Builds. All still flying. Already had a plan for "Dawn Flyer" to build so why not dedicate the build to this years Mass Build. Will be a first electric build for me. Anyone got a spare set of Flair Vintage wheels they have no use for and would like to sell? Cheers LPP
  17. Hi everyone. I built Ballerina (MB2016) and Skywriter (MB2017). The format worked well for me I must say. I did not join the 2018 MB as the choice of models was not for me. Also Skywriter build and maiden was not until May 18 so I dragged my heals a bit. However I have 2 super models which I love flying. Skywriter is a great size model as she stays made up and has done since 1st flight. I flew her at the Hobbyking flyin a month or so ago. Will follow this thread with interest. I really like the idea of a meet at Buckminster. Cheers Peter
  18. Posted by Tim Ballinger on 04/02/2017 15:07:29: Hi all, I'm just returning to the hobby after a 40 year gap and belatedly have started following your skywriter builds. Finding them very interesting so pleas keep on blogging. Having rescued some of my original models from the loft I done some refurb and have been getting some of my flying skills back up to scratch over the winter. I am itching to start building again and was trying to choose between a slec funfly and the skywriter. Since I have always fancied a biplane the skywriter has won the day. Not so much joining the mass build as gleaning everything I can from what you are all doing. So having made the decision I guess I'd better get the plans/parts on order. Tim Welcome to the merry band of Skywriter builders Tim... Happy building Peter
  19. I too agree that the Skywriter - lovely model that it is - won't be a beginners' build. Does that mean that one option, perhaps, is that this year you get given the choice of two models? One for "experienced builders" and one suitable for novices? I suspect if Skywriter does get "in" that doesn't necessarily mean we should disqualify it, unless someone makes an executive decision to remove it from the running before voting closes. Skywriter means Skywriter, to misquote ... someone. What's the point of voting, otherwise! In that eventuality,it'd be good to still have it in but with a less scary alternative. Personally, I still really like the idea of marking the Fli's 50th anniversary and a MB of it would tick that box for me. Simon
  20. I tend to agree that limiting the choice to recently published designs is probably a good idea simply because participants are more likely to still have the magazine/plan than one that was published several years ago. I had to borrow my Skywriter plan from a mate. The other consideration is what is the purpose of the Mass build? Is it a 'club' to get a group of probably reasonably experienced modellers together to build a common model and to share their experiences with the wider forum audience in the hope that the less experienced /novice builders will tag along and gain confidence and insights into modelling techniques? Or is it to encourage flyers who are not necessarily builders beyond ARTF assemblers to have a go knowing that there is support from the wider forum contributors. If the latter is the case the Skywriter is a poor choice because there are some potentially tricky bits, for example the cabane and interplane struts and it has two wings, I enjoy building wings but now I'm a bit bored with wing building. By comparison the Ballerina was a good choice because it lacks the possible pitfalls of the Skywriter whilst still providing a reasonable challenge. Perhaps a two model MB is the way forward as was suggested while this ,2017 MB, was being discussed. One model which is straightforward and likely to appeal to the inexperienced builder and a second model which has more advanced techniques employed and likely to provide a fair challenge to the more experienced builder. The hope being that more people will follow both threads and gain from both.

  22. She has finally taken to the skies today! She is a very well mannered lady, thanks also to Skywriter designer Lindsay Todd. I am looking forward to see all her tricks! Of course there would be plenty of scope to improve her looks. We'll see, for now I plan to fly her.
