BB
Couldn't find a Petrol section mods. My beloved Wot 4 took a tumble ! 1) Took off and as it bounced across the runway the prop caught ground & broke. 2) Induced shock/vibration, broke elevator coupling. 3) Killed throttle & levelled wings out for landing. 4) Went in slightly nose heavy, due to full tank. 5) Engine went into muddy puddle. Frame flipped over (no damage). But, the engine was covered in mud, (wet mud) carb didn't get submerged. Back at the bench. A quater turn of the prop driver produced metalic 'grinding'. So, my question is; Can anyone help with some engine strip down info. What should I look for damage wise. Suppliers etc... Any help much appreciated BB
Ultymate
Looking at your picture BB it looks like one of the smaller Zenoahs either 20/23/or 26 cc, I'm not sure if they're put together like the 45 and 62's but I know the bigger engines had a three piece crank which was pressed together. In the event of a crash or heavy prop strike the three parts of the crank would become disoriented with each other. I hope this is not the case with your's as it will either require a replacement crank or serious engineering to re-align the crank. There used to be a guy a good few years back who specialised in re-alignment and then TIG welding the component parts. I hope I'm barking up the wrong tree here and it's just some foreign matter that's got somewhere it shouldn't be. P.S. All the Zenoah manuals are available HERE Edited By Ultymate on 24/02/2011 20:59:
Alan Cantwell
typical zenoah, the mig welder was me, but i havnt got access any more, but i still re-align them,
BB
Thanks chaps... I knew it wouldn't be standard ! The site compact was a foot from inmpact, but even though I cut the lump it was carrying eniesha (spelt wrong). If there is damage, its that what caused it !! Damned gravity / velocity gets in the way just when you don't need it to ! BB (pm sent)
BB
Ultymate, as the title desciption says, its a Zenoah 23cc. Fitted with a rare 'mag' start i.e. dynamo start. Would be a shame to lose it to a p[uddle. BB

Alan Cantwell
i think the cranks on the way to me, keep fingers crossed it can be sorted, zenoah cranks supplied in garden stuff are differant to the aero versions, i have looked at many differant zenoah cranks in a local garden mower repair centre, none match the ones we use, pity really, you would not believe how cheap they are!!! i also emailed zenoah komatsu, asking if they would supply just the bendy front parts, the ones that hit the floor first, they declined, oh well, i tried,
BB
Ultymate - Oops I was a bit perdantic there methinks, sorry. Ken - I thought that too. But, I've since learned aero's are diviations. Alan - PM sent. Thanks in advance for the help. BB
Engine Doctor
Hello BB They can usually be sorted. I bought a model with a Zenoah 45 fitted .It all felt fine the owner said it had never been crashed .Like ! as soon as it got warm It tighten up and got stiff at tdc. The crank was soon removed and aligned in lathe . Took about ten mins to sort once removed . Anyone who used to repair old motorcycle engines will know how to sort this problem as many of the the older bikes had pressed in big end assemblies. I'm sure Alan C can sort it . Alan Cantwell
10 minutes? can i subcontract mine to you? my record is 23 hours, over many dinner times, but that was a bentone, not dispalced, did it though, quickest is 3 minutes, those clog it in a 3 jaw chuck boys dont have the advantage i have, of precision heavy duty collets, that will grip the shaft so true, a DTI doesnt even register,, zenoah 38s are the worst, i goran when asked to batter one
Engine Doctor
Hello Alan . Ah ................bent shafts thats a differnt ball game !
BB
Shaft not bent. Did a strip down so as to give Alan C the parts. As I did so I discovered the problem: And solved it. So no need for any engineering. Just a really good clean. Engine has since been bench run and performs as normal. Thank you for the PM's. All advice was recieved and is duly appreciated. As necessary I'll continue to pick your collective brains. Now if some one would just add to my Ali Weld thread I'd be even happier.
