PSSA 11th and 12th June

Having studied the forecast all week on the run up to our second event on the Gt Orme, it looks like we will get some flying on Saturday but Sundays forecast still looks miserable, and to avoid folk travelling long distances with no reward, reluctantly Im going to cancel the official meet on Sunday and make it a 1-day event Saturday 11th June.

Tomorrows forecast shows Westerly winds between 7-10mph depending on which website you believe. This puts us on the most favoured Tank track slope, the weather is reportedly fine with sunny spells, so if its a little windier on top than the forecast for Llandudno we should be ok. 10am meet in the car park.

Sunday shows S/E winds (not flyable on the Orme) and persistant rain all day. At this range, having watched the forecast over a number of days I have no option but to cancel day 2 of our event.

I have updated the PSSA Website with this message tonight - HERE Our recommendation DO NOT TRAVEL for Sunday specifically as the chances of us flying are too slim.

Kev - Im staying in Llandudno Saturday night, so if by magic the weather turns out flyable I will be up there to make the most of it... but I cant risk people travelling long distances specifically for the Sunday, hence our decision.

Apols to anyone planning to join us on Sunday only, see you tomorrow if you can make it.

Phil Cooke.

Hi Kev. A day of two halves mate - fairly low turnout of the usual suspects
Morning started off wet, and no wind ( average 3 -6 MPH and Northerly with it) , so lift was very poor and had to resort a little electron assist - but by early afternoon, things picked up and we enjoyed blue skies and sunshine.

Windspeed picked up quite a lot, and we sloped the less than great, but usable northerly face with some of the slightly bigger stuff getting airborne - notably the Victor, T33 Shooting stars, and a nice mid sized Hawker Hunter.

I think Simon and Sue have some nice photos, but I didnt get many....

John Hey with what must be the smallest PSSA model yet !
The "Flitzer" from Focke Wulf 11" span model was originally for Jetex power many moons ago, and John eventually got it flying remarkably well once the lift improved.Full aileron and elevator control via the spektrum "Vapor" brick all in one, and single cell lipo, and excellent detailing for such a tiny wee thing.

Si and myself had a coming together on a rather nice Spitfire formation flypast, with Phil escorting in the Tucano. Mines a bit of a big mess, but will be replaced or repaired very soon - and Simon's starboard wingtip was hurt, and he although he nearly landed well, it all went a bit Pete Tong right at the end, and the rear end got a bit re-kitted
Again, I'm sure, it can be repaired fairly easily.

We ended the evening with a nice barby party back at Mackey mansions, until the wee small hours, which everyone seemed to enjoy. Roll on August for the Lleyn sessions.

Yeah good round up Tim, after 6pm the wind did finally move round to the West slope, and from 6:30pm till 7:45pm we flew there with the T-33s, the Hawk and the Victor in really good, smooth conditions, and of course the glorious sun setting over the water! We only landed then due to our evening invitation.

Thanks again to Tim and Rahme for a fantastic BBQ - good to socialise with a drink in hand rather than a Tx for a few hrs.

I went up the Orme this morning having mopped up my Full Welsh breakfast in the B&B - was up there for 9am - it was rotten - with blustery S/E winds and rain. I drove home back to Derby and it rained NONE STOP all the way - I guess all this weather was headed Llandudnos way - so we made the right decision to cancel the second day for sure.

Tim you are right, Sue got loads of really good in flight photos from the Saturday afternoon and evening session, I will post a few here and on the PSSA website once edited - there is also the T-33 'tail chase' in flight video, which Ill link to once Rez has helped me edit it out.

Mixed emotions on this one then, always hard to lose a day to weather on a 2 day event, but certainly some really good flying to be had for those that travelled (and waiting for the lift) on Saturday afternoon - just a shame there weren't more of us there with more models to play with.

Next PSSA meet is on the Lleyn Peninsula, 13th and 14th August. See you there.

Looking forward to both the August bash
( but not the birthday that goes with it ) and the pictures Phil - good call on the Sunday cancellation.
As we said at the time ( about 11PM I think LOL ) as we looked out to a nice clear half light night over the garden to the sea - surely they are wrong about tomorrow?
Unfortunately they weren't
Ah well there's always tomorrow for some of us

As promised heres just a small selection of the many fantastic photos taken by Sue Lee on the Saturday afternoon and evening...used here with permission - thanks Sue x

First, the full line up of PSS pilots (L to R) Tim Mackey, Phil Cooke, Simon Cocker, Steve Howarth and John Hey. Not the largest of turnouts due to weather forecast and many of our regulars having other commitments... but some quality flying none the less
Camera fitted to my T-33 meant someone was always being chased no matter how low they flew!

Later when the wind turned to the SW we captured some gorgeous sunset formation shots with the T-33s, here's just a couple...

Sorry they are all of the same aircraft they were airborne most of the flyable day between 2pm and 8pm!

Thanks Myron...have you checked out some of the other PSSA videos - watch it on U tube, and theres a fair few more from Rez Manzoori on the side bar menu. Also, the PSSA website itself has some links from earlier events, theres a great chase sequence of our hawks and the B52 at the bottom of that page.

From the picture it looks like no damage to yours and you wouldn't be able to guess that Simon's has a "modified" all moving tail section due to broken fuselage

I weighed the Flitzer when I got home - 51grams and wingspan is just under 12 inches. I couldn't stop giggling when the lift picked up in the afternoon and it actually started soaring OK. I think that speck inbetween the T33s on your picture above is it flying - shows the difference in scale. Impressive range on those little spectrum receivers - was a bit wary of getting too high and too far out (luckily the twin boom seems to help with orientation).

Looks like you all had a good day!
Unfortunately I was working so unable to attend.

Still. I have been very busy getting my new models ready for the RCME flying at Greenacres later this month!!

My new Webbit (SWM) and the H.K. Predator!

Hope to see you all later in the year on the Orme.... or at Greenacres later this month if your visiting!!

Hmm, bit of problem with all this soaring stuff, I'm getting ideas beyond my field.

I've got DG1000 which is mentioned elsewhere and I will not be chucking that off the Great Orme until some issues are sorted out. In fact the concept of throwing a 'plane load of hard earned dosh & building effort out towards the sea is still a bit worrying. Anyway as a soaring virgin something rather more tame would probably be appropriate?

So to further my thoughts - as capable fixed wing power flyer what should I be considering when thinking about having a go soaring? For example if I was to build one of TN's hawks without an engine would that do?

Great Video Tim et al.

nice photos John - thanks for posting...

Timbo - sorry to hear the Spitfire was a loss... Simon has repaired his now and having lost one wingtip he's decided to modify his model to a more aggressive LF variant!

So you boys might be able to tell who's who easier now

Dave - we had a great 1/2 days flying once the wind picked up ... Sunday was a loss due to rain. Sorry you couldnt join us this time.

Full report is written and will be added to the PSSA site with some more photos soon.

Ian,

For a 1st spole model I would recommend an EPP flying wing. Indestructable and not to costly to purchase and fly.

Once you have some confidence on the slope, you could then look at a semi scale / scale model.

Also see if anyone in your club goes slopeside and see if you can tag along for a try.

See you soon

Dave
