Paul Williams
Where do I buy the plastic to make cockpit windows it needs to be 0.5mm thick and clear
Steve Hargreaves - Moderator
Sometimes worth raiding the boxes that the kids toys come in Paul.....they often have a clear section that can be used & is ideal. Fix in place with canopy glue & Robert is your Mothers brother!!!! Failing that clear sheet can be bought from a model shop see here or even some stationers stock it... Danny Fenton
The best stuff seems to be "Vivak" PETG I buy it on Ebay, but haven't bought any for some time so cannot recall exactly whom I got the last lot from. It usually comes with a cloudy protective film on each side. I vacform with this in place (you don't have too) as it helps keep the canopy clear of small imperfections. I find the thicker stuff works best. If you are on a budget then as Steve says, keep hold of old packaging Cheers Danny
Steve Hargreaves - Moderator
Ah...I was thinking about flat sheet windows such as you might find on a more vintage type design.... Do you mean to say Danny that they can now mould scale type canopies? Wonderful what they can do these days....
Danny Fenton
Well on the basis that I over think everything, Paul probably does only want flat sheets of clear plastic. He does say it needs to be .5mm might be a bit thick for anything but the heaviest of kids toys I find the blank CD disks you get at either end of a "cake" of blanks gives a lovely clear plastic. Even the early Kiel Kraft and Guillows kits had vacformed canopies on the scale models didn't they? Cheers Danny
Wingman
Try Google - shopping - and put 0.5mm acrylic sheet in the search box - there are a few hits. Or try here
Ben B
Easter eggs containers are a good source of this (for canopies at least).

Broken Prop
Thanks for the link Wingman. I see from the web page that Inwoods sell Paxolin as well. I have been trying to get hold of some of that stuff for ages and could not find it anywhere......

Ray Litten
If any one is still interested in PETG clear sheet for making their own canopies then call Peter on 01362 668457 at Station Road Baseboards, he sells a larger sheet (440mm * 325mm) as well as the standard size of 220mm * 325mm. I've just bought some off of hime in two thickness, 0.5mm and 1mm. Prices for the larger sheet are £2.00 for 0.5mm and £3.35 for 1mm. Toni Reynaud
"I made cockpits out of coca cola bottles ! " Me too. Great fun and for smaller canopies, not too difficult. The most complex one was an Auster windscreen, and I also did one for the Nijhuis Hurricane.
