Overlapping Solarfilm

Recommended Posts

Hi Folks,

Just building my first model for 25 years, got to the covering stage.

I want to do a two tone finish with solarfilm. I never mastered it 25 years ago, always got an uneven edge and pulling apart of the overlapping film surfaces, plus bubbles in the overlapping bits.

Any clues about the process?

The best stuff I've used for overlaps in Solarfilm is Prymol.  You brush a very thin smear over the joint to be overlapped and let it dry (a few seconds) before sticking the next piece of film down.  Rub any bubbles out before applying the iron and if any persist just prick them out as Eric suggests.  Prymol is a solvent based material that etches the shiny film allowing the adhesive to really grab.  A tin lasts for several models.

I too use solarloc but have also found breaking the shine with fine silicone carbide paper helps to keep edges down. Also as Eric says make all overlaps downstream so the airflow can't lift them or use strips of solar trim to seal them down (good trick for ARTF's.)
