But then anything that has engines being dismantled in it is good for me! Reading Pete Lowe's column was poignant. I met him and Janet last year at a presentation in Kent. Sorry to be pedantic but the Sopwith Pup on page 42 is a Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutter! Tony Jones Posted June 12, 2015 Share Posted June 12, 2015 Nigel Hawes' article on P51 about an ESC fire he experienced shows him (I assume it's him) leaning down close to the model on the ground from which smoke is billowing. He makes it clear that at this stage he did not know if the smoke was coming from the ESC or the battery. I am a little concerned that there is a fair content of 'Full-size' aviation creeping in. I object to this. If I require info and tales of the big stuff I would a buy a copy of Aeroplane Monthly or Fly Past or even Flight. I love aviation I was in the RAF and worked in airline engineering went to trade and large air shows and am even now doing some ad hoc work for a related industry. But I only buy one R/C mag' RCM&E. Four pages advertising the same publishing house other magazines!..... no thanks.. Weekenders was a poor show too this month.. was it models or motor boats or job pitch..... lets focus on keeping it a monthly model mag of quality....! I can't agree. It's admittedly different, and easy on the eye - but not in a good way. I think it's way less standout, less individual and less eye catching - the mag title in white and red (as opposed to predominantly red, and white), coupled with - the way some of the block text isn't "outlined" any more, plus - the predominant colour (blue, this month) running from top to bottom rather than the previous style which "topped and tailed" the cover photo have all contributed to a loss of identity. I could of course just be an old curmudgeon who doesn't like change but - apart from change for changes sake - does anyone think this cover format will make the mag stand out more in W.H. Smith? I reckon quite the opposite Try this simple test. Hold the mag up at eye level, then obscure all bar the top inch and a half or so - i.e. replicate the view most punters will get in the newsagents' racks. Which is the most striking? Thiought so! The cover has lost its way; it cant be seen on the shelf in WH Smiths; it reminds me of the last copies Model Flyer before they closed down; they too had pages of full size aviation and advertising for other in house knitting magazines... I believe the editor of that particular TOMB has been contributing to RCME over recent months.... much of which I do feel I had read before... New scribblers are needed for variety and interest.. but not ones who regurgitate previous offerings.. Easier said than done I know; it is the bench mark of a good literary organ that can keep its readership entertained with variety and good news... The editor of the defunct Model Flyer hasn't been contributing old material to RCME so you're getting a bit muddled there Area51. You must be thinking about another publication? We've received a lot of positive feedback about the Classic Cockpit series which is a small scale builder's reference guide. Museum visits and pages of colour plates you'll never see in RCME. Project heavy lift- very good timing as I have generated enough 'bits' for a hexacopter build! Looking forward to Tim Hoopers new series. Alex Whittaker is always entertaining even if he does go off-piste from time to time! Keep the free plans coming. It was all I could to stop myself from starting a Wiggo - and another unfinished project no doubt. Heck, I may start one anyway. As for Andy Sephton's Classic Cockpits, I don't like to be negative but he really shouldn't bother in my view. Tedious and turgid, I hope it is a short series! Just my 2p worth. My remark is the result of being a long-time reader and subscriber to RCME and finding the apreviious editor on many occasions to be somewhat defensive and complacent. Same old format of ARTF reviews (wheels fell off etc etc) but it was a great model anyway. The constant plugging of suppliers by the regular columnists although the magazine contains pages of advertising already. Its RCME why free flight? Helicopters and drones, who already have their own specialist publications and have no interest for me. I'm tired of the 'Trad Brit' ramblings, I really think most readers are adult and don't need baby talk or need to know what the writer eats and drinks. Over the previous months it was clear something was amiss and it may very well improve but for me its stale and lost its way. I have cancelled my direct debit I cant be descriptive than that. Who knows I may pick up a copy and resubscribe one day but not as it is. The new editor could even provide the magazine with less pages but something substantial to say. Now that would be better value. The only plus was Pete Lowes column and sadly that has to end some time.
