Stevo
Hi All, I see there is guidance out there for painting our model's pilots. I have one of these : - (MOTHER!!!) As it's latex and I don't want to mess it up, I read that Arcylic paints are best with a coat of primer on first. Two questions: - 1) Acrylic paints? Im OK with that - what have others used with hints or tips 2) Mounting - what is the best way to mount one of these (It's a family forum!) She comes stapled to a thin cardboard base. So what next? do I staple her to a thin plywood base before painting? Thanks
jrman
I fill mine with expanding foam then after trimming I just epoxy it to the cockpit base. I don't use any primer and have had no problems but just wash it well before filling and painting.
Stevo
I like the expanding foam idea. I'll be off to Wickes in a minute!

Tony Read 2
I do exactly what jrman does. I retain the cardboard, so the body shape is retained, cut a bigish hole in it and a squirt a bit of foam in at a time so as not to distort or overfill. Arcylics seem to stick just fine. I give mine a wash of oil based paint at the end just to highlight the details. In your case that would be both of them!
Dave Hopkin
Coat of Water based varnish then Humbrol.....
Stevo
I like the foam idea. I've painted these before, and the latex does seem to have some very small (micro) holes in after painting, which is why I asked about priming. (no, not fish eyes, I thoroughly wash the pilot befor painting). The water based varnish first as a sealer/primer seems like a good idea. Tony - what wash do you use? Biggles' Elder Brother - Moderator
I have done quite a few of these over the years. I wash them well in warm soapy water then rinse off. After that I paint with acrylics. Yes sometimes there are some small "pinholes" but TBH I'm generally not too bothered - the paint hides a multitude of sins and lets face it inside a canopy passing by at 40mph 30feet away you're not going to notice pinholes to the greater part filled in by paint! Regarding the filling - I generally use the stuffing they come with! Finally I put them in place then run CA aound the base - I haven't had one fall down on the job yet! heinkel
I just washed the latex in the same way as BEB then used a combination of acrylic and enamel paint
Tony Read
That's a great pilot heinkel.
David P Williams
Likewise, but removed the cardboard, trimmed the base, cut a balsa insert and attached with CA, then Zap-a-Dap-a-Goo'd it in place.
