dave windymiller
Got this today - Built by Rob Millinship back in the early 80s as a pre production new kit for Rojair. Looks like it took a wetting when Rojair factory burnt down but i think its salvagable so something to do over winter. Stable mate for the funfighter FW190. Dave Windy Miller I think the bulges need a little refining as they look a bit big! dave windymiller
I wanted a rojair model when i was a kid but never could aford one. Rob Millinship was in our club and was the designer for these kits so used to taunt me with beautifully turned out examples. Now nearly 40 years on, ive manage to land myself two. Just picked this up, a "new" in box ME163. The only sign of aging is the decal sheet clear surrounding has gone brown. Plenty to do this winter! dave windymiller
The 109 is progressing The fus has been resheeted on the foam decks with 1/64 ply and the mount/sc25 engine/tank/throttle cable installed. The cannons should have had vac formed sections but one was missing so i used ally tube which i think will make a better job The wings were easy to strip off the vaneer (it fell off). I plan to resheet using 1/16 balsa but would normally use the foam blanks to do this (sandwhich method). I decided to make some blanks by cutting new wings which also gave me a pair of spare cores! These will be resheeted once ive sorted the retracts out! Its got a very thick wing section, at least twice that of a cambrian fun fighter so will take the landing gear well. I will also add flaps as per scale eg 2 on each wing. dave windymiller
As you cant get spinners the right shape i decided to make one using spun aluminium. The chuck was made from layers of bakolite. I may yet decide to make a glass cloth version using the chuck to make a mold. The backplate is cut for a 10X5 3-blade prop The foam blank has been modified to take an electric retract. I will need to modify the retract to limits its travel to about 80-85 degrees. Colin Leighfield
What a great project. That thicker wing section should help the flying characteristics a lot, I imagine, as well as providing a good basis for fitting the retracts. What a gift being able to spin aluminium like that, so useful.
dave windymiller
Thanks chaps. I learnt spinning by making a gas turbine! After spining stainless bits, ally is easy and anyone with a lathe could do it, even with a toy lathe like mine!
David P Williams
Well I have a lathe and an interest in spinning spinners! Any chance of a 'how to do it' thread Dave?

dave windymiller
Making some progress. I decided to add a better pilot than just the usual head and shoulders so i got one from real model pilots. Had to shrink him in height as i couldnt use the full depth Not totally to scale and once the canopy is in plenty good enough. The canopy didnt have any form of frame cast in so i had the bright idea of casting a fibfreglass shell around the outside of the canopy then cutting it out to produce a more realistic frame. Note the whole of the rear of the canopy opens on a 109G Finished spinner The thing i love about foam wings is the speed of progress once the wing skin is in place. 2 days work for a nealy finished wing. The flaps on a 109 are quite complex with 3 parts. The flap thats about mid span will be lowered by a servo in the wing. I can also make this flap act as an aileron if necessary as the now scalish aileron is quite small. The inner flap has an upper and lower section which is part of the radiator duct and these seperate as the flap lowers. The top will be driven bt a torque arm and the two halves joined by a linkage that increases seperation as it lowers (hopefully!) stay tuned Dave windy Miller Edited By dave windymiller on 18/08/2018 21:39:

dave windymiller
Been distracted with other projects such as the Mig 142 but now back on the ME109 to try and get it finished for this year. Not going to be light as its 1.5kg as it stands (without 5 wing mini servos, battery and finishing) but the thick wing and flaps should help. dave windymiller
Slow progress but bulges look a bit more like they should compared to early pics Cockpit glass added with fibreglass frame. Trying to get this and the Komet to the spraying stage together

Nightflyer
Definitely looking good and v much like an ME109. It looks like your salvage job is going to look superb. I do miss the Rojair kits they were rather beautiful models in their day and would today if still available.
