christopher small
I am building a Chica from plans ,I need to cut some square holes in 3 mm balsa and 3mm ply what is the best way to cut it, Chris
Dave Hopkin
Not sure why you would need 3mm square holes for a servo - but the only way I know is to drill a 3mm hole and carefully run a square needle file into it to square out the corners being very careful not to over enlarge the hole
Peter Miller
I think he means cutting holes for servos in 3 mm ply. Drill a 1/4" hole and use a fret saw. I use a power scroll saw. If you don't have a fret saw or coping saw the best way would be to drill a series of holes round inside the line marking out the holes and cut through with a heavy duty Stanley knife. Then file or sandpaper the wood up to the line. After this you will order a fret saw on line so you don't have all that hassle again!! Dave Hopkin
Ah yes - its clicked now peter!!!! I tend to use a cutting wheel in the dremel and hack out a hole just undersize then file to the right size
christopher small
Thanks for your replies,i would normally use the power scroll saw ,but on thin balsa it rips it up badly I need a finer blade, same with the fretsaw, the cutting wheel in the Dremel sounds a better idea though I will try it now ,should have a small cutting wheel in the workshop. Mike T
A hand fretsaw with fine blade for the ply and a craft knife and straight edge for the balsa. Or just buy some fine blades for the power scroll saw?
christopher small
Just tried the cutting wheel in the Dremel worked really well on the ply and balsa, just needed my modelling knife to do the corners, off to get some fine blades for the power scroll saw now,

Keith Sharples
Hi Christopher. Just about to do the same model. I have to finish off a PA28 first then straight on with it. It looks a fun fly. Happy build Keith
christopher small
Now that's the way to do it,your servos are a bit bigger than my 9 gram ones, perhaps I should have used the Morticer might try it later.
Stevo
Oh I just replace the template on the top for various size servos... I got fed up trying to make rectangular holes, scrollsaw, chisel, file, Permagrit...
