GrumpyGnome
Hi everyone, hope you can help. Just bought an engine off eBay - I know, I know.... Anyway, it looks ok, decent compression, starts ok, throttles ok, but smokes like someone on 60 a day! It is an SC 70. Any ideas ? Valves/tappets ? Thanks in advance, GG
ASH.
Too rich on the needles, too much oil in fuel or gunge in the exhaust system.
Jon H
yup. what fuel are you running? Its also quite possible its previous owner filled it with castor and that is likely to take a while to burn off.
GrumpyGnome
Don't think too rich - leaned it out quite a way but only for a few mins.. Running on brand new Model Technics 10% nitro. Exhaust seems clear but will have a closer look. Will run it some more and see if it gets better. Thanks for suggestions
Steve Hargreaves - Moderator
Which Model Technics 10% nitro fuel GG...there are a few....if it's GX or GN10 these are castor based & will smoke a lot.... All glow engines smoke & it can take a while for the smoke to die down after you first start them.....run it at full throttle for a couple of minutes or so & see if it reduces. If not it's probably too rich.....
will -0
I bought an OS52fs off ebay ages ago. I popped the head off and it had what looked like mayonaise inside. Cleaned it out and it ran/runs a treat. So never assume with an ebay special!
GrumpyGnome
It is Contest 10 fuel.....
ASH.
In cold weather you have to run richer which give out more white smoke.
Jon H
Posted by GrumpyGnome on 26/02/2018 07:25:01: It is Contest 10 fuel..... there's your problem. I forgot how filthy that fuel was until a customer brought his model in for some tuning help. Compared to the fuels i normally use its really messy. Once you have used it up give Model Technics Laser 5 or Techpower 5 a go. They are cleaner and cheaper. You dont need 10% nitro either, the sc will be fine on 5%

Doing my best to spread the word amongst a few 'die hards' that I know, but even the evidence of their own eyes when they see my engines running fine on Laser 5 doesn't seem to be enough to convince them...................need a campaign like......."Castor? ....just say no". Pretty much. 18% oil is also really excessive these days and castor serves no real purpose at this point. Most of my club have converted to Laser 5 with some also using techpower in 5 and 10% flavours. All the engines we run on these fuels run faultlessly and between us all we use ASP, OS, Saito, Laser, Enya, and irvine in both two and 4 stroke forms. The big Enya 4 strokes really love the Laser 5 fuel as do thr ASP 52 4 strokes used in some of our trainers. Contest 10 is not a bad fuel by any means, its just very messy.
