Dwain Dibley.
Thanks Martian I hope you are well Matey. By the way, I ordered an Irvine .40 sized Dural undercarriage today, with a view to cutting it in half to make it wider....It is the correct height to the axles, but it is deeper than the gap I have made in the model by 3 mm. LOL Plus I got a new 10 ch Rx (last one) for under £20 Sussex Models. I Radiolink But it says 9 Ch on the case I hear you cry........................It's all to do with the S.Bus capability apparently. All good fun. D.D. Dwain Dibley.
Well today the orders were from My Daughter, to get her room painted, so in between coats I made this, whilst looking out at this. D.D Still misty over Clee Hills, but a Cracking day all the same. Checking all the bits. I used the existing holes for the servo leads. Then I made some blocks for the servo screws. Nice and snug. I then discovered I had put the servo directly in line with the strut fixing, should not be too much of a trauma. I made two, to make sure they were handed, just in case. Wing construction, I like making wings but it goes too quickly. Told you so................ Aileron construction took some thought but in the end I used the laser cut sheets as a template to make 5 riblets. Watch out for the tapered tip. All sheeted up, don't forget to add internal blocks for hinge fixings.I don't know whether to make some ply horns or use commercial ones. ?? McG 6969
... PCB glass fiber horns, please Dwain. Your '120' deserves it. ... and don't get to 'poetic' regarding those Clee Hills... Cheers Chris
Dwain Dibley.
Ok McGee, I will look into those, and drag my gaze away from the Horizon. One last pic for tonight, the aileron is all sanded up and the hinges are cut in. The trailing edge sheet is on, and the last rib is fitted. D.D. Dwain Dibley.
Hi Chaps, There are quite a few things to get into the wing before the sheeting can go on...... Servo 2 fixing points for the strut A third fixing point for the support strut Some infills in the front and rear spars to facilitate the Chamfered tip The Sheer webs of course Blocks for hinges D.D. So I bought a nice shiny new Undercarriage, and in the process of clearing out my scrap bin (thanks to another thread), I found this piece of Dural, marked out from my aborted Cessna 195 build...................DOH The gap here is 1/8th smaller than the U/C. It fits in there now. Blocks for hinges and the strengtheners for the strut fixings the rear one has supports, the front, just a fill in between the spars. The infills in the spars at the tip. They both still need to be planed up. Next was the 3/8th leading edge, I measured the depth of the ribs at the front , added 1/8th (2 X 1/16 L/E sheet) The L/E was propped up with 3/32 balsa sheet under plastic, to stop it being a permanent part of the wing, and the piece glued on. Block for the plug in secondary strut, shaped to fit. Sheer webs. The next job , is to fit top L/E sheet, then pull the wing off the board and fit the bottom sheet and wing tip. Then make some strut fixings, out of McG's PCB board ??? D.D.
McG 6969
... yes, yes, YES, please Dwain. PCB for the wing struts fixings as well. Just think about the L'Oréal house slogan >... "Because I'm worth it"... and your '120' definitely is. Cheers Chris
Dwain Dibley.
I remembered I have these two materials in my work shop. The green stuff was given to me by a computer Techie at a heli club I used to go to, it is 0.75 mm thick, and unbreakable. The other stuff is copper on one side and 105 mm thick, also unbreakable... I think it will cut on the scroll saw though. Is this the stuff you are talking about McG ?? D.D.
Dwain Dibley.
In between digging the veg patch and mowing the lawn, I got the wings sorted. Second one always goes a bit quicker than the first for some reason. D.D. Made some covers to hold the covering where the servo arm pokes out. And then there were two. A nice red one... Dwain Dibley.
Well chaps, I hope you haven't all got sick from eating all those Choccy Eggs. It's back to work for me tomorrow..... Here are some pics of the progress so far. Not much to report, as it was a repetition of what has gone before. The one anomaly is that the plan specifies a figure of 5/16th under the third rib from the tip as the correct dihedral. Now the braces give an inch at that point................So I have let it sit where it wants to, as it would have been a lot of chopping about to change things. I measured the dihedral brace on the plan and it was projecting a figure of 5/16th at the 9th rib from the tip. Hey Ho..... D.D. Wallace, working on the Control Panel................Hang On !!!!!............... Not another cup of Blinking Tea Lad....!! Mind Yer Head !! McG 6969
Sorry for my late reply, Dwain. We were away for the the Easter WE, but YES, your glass board is the right stuff. I just hope the "105mm" thickness of the 'copper' one was a typo... ? I use some 1,5mm thickness homemade FG board but yours is very suitable. Here is Vicky's rudder arrangement for pull/pull cables. Cheers & keep an eye on Wallace's head... Chris
Dwain Dibley.
Hope you enjoyed your Holidays McGee. Definitely a typo, should read 1.5 mm. Good news tho, I can continue making the horns and the strut fixings. I don't think Wallace will be able to fly the Cessna . Time to send for two new pilots............. D.D. Dwain Dibley.
Couldn't resist having a play. D.D. The tail wheel....... I am going to swap that ugly screw for a grub screw These little tinkers will be sunk into the blocks in the wing once I have made the struts. They will have to be slightly angled to suit
Dwain Dibley.
I decided to use the under carriage as one piece in the end, as the wheel base matched the plan better. If I had split it, it would have been even wider. Here I am fitting the captive nuts the hard way, due to already fitting the battery tray. LOL. It went well and measuring thrice and drilling once payed off. D.D. Extra holes drilled in the ply plate. The washers are there just to support things as the captive nut is pulled into the wood. Nice and tight up against the wood. This could be considered as overkill......... So...... the 0.40 size dural u/c from Irvine does the job quite well, even if I say so myself. Next job is sheeting the rest of the fuselage, in good old 3/32 balsa, but not before adding the strut fixings on the top side of the ply u/c plate. Dwain Dibley.
Anybody ever used this ?? Looks pretty good, may just get some to experiment. D.D
Dwain Dibley.
I had a play today with brown paper, I did this on the inside of the cockpit because it takes paint really well and tidies it all up a bit. Got a new toy as well, but I think it's a bit over the top for cutting stringers..... Also, I just checked the link above and found it linked to a pic of a shark......I bet you all thought I had lost the plot ?? Here is what I was referring to. LINK D.D. Dwain Dibley.
I remembered I had to get the strut fixings in before sheeting the front end. I decided to use some leftover items from DB Sport and scale Auster kit. I laminated them with lite-ply and reinforced them with triangle stock and a flat plate. D.D. Martian
I love to see ingenious ideas and Cessna is looking lovely Dwain. BTW I have used that chrome Oracover it's very good but looks a bit to Chrome rather than polished ali I used a dusting of Rustoleum Chrome spray it worked really well then .well for me
Dwain Dibley.
Thanks Martian, I will order some and see what I think. D.D.
Piers Bowlan
Super build Dwain - I'm taking notes! Is the lower strut attachment lexan or acrylic or neither? Just wondered why you didn't use the ' 'unbreakable' green PCB material you used the other end?
Dwain Dibley.
Thanks Piers. Just convenience really, I had spares already cut and the right length, left from the DB Auster kit. Just checked DB's site, and can't see them.....It is some type of acrylic or poly carbonate tho I think. D.D.
