Walts
I've looked all the way through this thread hoping there would be some mention of the C of G position. I guess you don't need to mention it as you all have your plans in front of you I gave my plans away to a guy in the states that wanted to build it but was having trouble finding a copy. I decided not to build this one as I already have a 62" Hurricane, but the builds on here are looking great I want to play with the Cof G on my Hurricane, I know It's a different model, but it is 62" and well.........It is a Hurricane! My plan shows the Cof G at 78mm from the leading edge at the fus sides. This seems very far forward and requires a lot of lead! The plane also flew nose heavy and sluggish with all the weight in the nose. Ideally I want to put it at 98mm to shed some lead and make it more pleasent to fly, but I don't want to over do the C of G. What does Tony's plan show for the C of G please? Thanks, Ian. Sandy Taylor
Hi all, I went to maiden my Hurri today, but got down to the field and it was blowing a gale, so I thought otherwise! Took a few photos of it though including one of my grandfather who flew Hurri's in Burma in WWII. This is a replica of the plane he flew. I still need to do the finishing touches of antenna / guns etc but that can wait until after the maiden!

Just bought some digital scales and was pleasantly suprised by the AUW of the Hurri. Came in at 3.4kg which equates to 7.5 lbs! I think Tony's came in at 3.75kg. As this is my first scratch build, it is definitely NOT my building technique - I put it down to the great Balsa i got from Auzac (Balsa importer based in South Australia) who got me exactly the densities of Balsa i asked for - that has to make a big difference. Bryan Witon
Thats awesome Sandy, mine came in at 8lbs and like you my first real scratch build. I got to say it was very enjoyable to. Far more than putting together an Arf. Not that there is anything wrong with them, I just got alot more out of scratch building putting your heart and soul into it. Yeah really enjoyed it. It did help with the excellent artical by RCM&E and great easy to follow plan by Tony. I hope to build more of Tony's designs in the future.. Bryan Witon
Hi Guys, Thanks for the the kind words, and yes Chris no cows were hurt in the making of this movie.lol. Yes i was pleased how the brown did look there Doug so all in all it was awesome. Really just took of and flew , i was waiting for something to happen but nothing did so cool. It was quite a crosswind at the field yesterday thats why im going corner to corner. but need not worry the Hurricane handled it all with ease. YAHOO Cheers Bryan
Doug Ireland
A very fine landing too, but it looks like you could do with another 20m on your runway
Bryan Witon
Hi Doug, Funny you say that last year we added 10m at each end. lol. she is pretty slippery through the air, but i was keeping abit of speed up just to make sure no stall. I went and flew again today and man shes just grooves along nice just like Tony says, she goes where you point her and is steady as a rock. I managed to land well with in the runway today lol. I came in nice and steady and she slowed down sweet and just sinks in nice. Awesome plane. I can't say enough about it, you guys are just going to love it.. Just make sure you get a good CofG, i had mine at 90cm but with a good nose drop on the balance point and it felt just perfect at that.. Bill Frost
Bryan, Well done indeed, looked fantastic, glad to see it performed so well ! It's encouraging to get some evidence at last that the end result more-than justifies the hours involved! I've nearly finished the construction of the centre wing (just contemplating what extra support to give the retract-bearers just now), so completion is several months away, but this is really good news. Congratulations also to your cameraman - quite a long sequence to film! Best wishes, Bill
Bryan Witon
Thanks Bill, Yes he did a awesome job on the video, i did not reliase it was so long, I was having so much fun beatting up the strip. I need to chop it down a bit so theres not so long.lol.. Retracts i just glued triangel balsa under and around the bearers, seems quite strong flying of our strip. so i think she will hold up alright. Sandy Taylor
Well done Bryan! Fantastic flying and landing! I too have maidened the hurri (semi successfully ... came in WAY too fast for landing, overshot the landing area and flipped it when the wheels caught on the thick grass) But alas only VERY minor damage, and she flew GREAT! I was a bit worried about how id handle it as ive only been flying around 8 months, but i reckon if I rest my fears about stalling during landing and slow it down the landing will be fine. My computer crashed recently so i'm still reinstalling but will post some video soon - any hints about the flight would be greatly appreciated! Hugh Coleman
WOW! Those low passes look sensational. You are right about the red/brown; from a distance in day light it looks fine. Truly inspirational. Cheers, Hugh
Bryan Witon
Thanks for the great comments guys Congrats Sandy on your test flight to, she is pretty slippery in the air but she will slow up nice for landing. Shame that they don't seem to have long enough runways some times lol.. I have Edited video and this is the link to the shorter version. With all the good stuff. lol http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D7zH2yd2yTg Thanks BryanEdited By Timbo - Moderator on 28/07/2009 10:26:
