It is totally flying in the face ( excuse the pun ) of my interest area ( aerobatics is not reaaly me ). I just liked the look of it. Grumpy, you have my idea. A couple of regular models to have in the car, one as a back up to negate a trip to the field only to find the gremlins have infiltrated one of them and therefore the loss of a flying opportunity. The SIM will take a bit of convincing yet as I do struggle to place myself in the correct view. It's the only thing that puts me off it otherwise I could become a bit of an addict. Toto Dont get me wrong. I always take a spare and if planning to stay the day a couple more but as youve realised, because of weather and only flying weekends, opportunities are limited. If you've got 10 models (or more 😉) with various battery configurations and only get 20 days available for whatever the reason, your favourite will be used regularly but others very rarely taken out. toto Posted February 13 Author Share Posted February 13 Well ....... I've been in the shed making room for the twin otter assembly. ...... Now my shed is a bit like a rubix cube .... you have to continually have to keep twisting it about to make your next move. So I have been repositioning completed models in order to make room for the Otter. The shelving plan had been accomplished but i want to keep my model stand free of the otter for now as I have some replacement wheels coming for the Super Cub and the beaver. They are due anytime. So the plan is to change out the wheels for the Super Cub, then change out the wheels for the Beaver and replace the front cowl at the same time. You never know, maybe even the horisontal stabilisor might have arrived from the states for the Beaver as well and that can be tackled at the same time. Once the wheels and cowl have been changed out ( an hours work ) I'll dedicate the model stand to the assembly of the Twin Otter. That will keep me going whilst we await a break in the weather ( hopefully ). Thats the plan .... my guesstimated start date on the Twin Otter is Thursday Friday of this week .... fingers crossed. cheers toto Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I chased up my wheels order for both the Beaver and the Super Cub only to find they are just being despatched today. What made me chase it up was when I read the order confirmation, it said " your order will be dispatched as soon as the items are in stock " .... I was a bit miffed as the items were stated as in stock so was actually expecting them on my doorstep by now as the order was made towards the back end of last week. So .... I phoned and got the " they are being dispatched today " routine. I suspect the order had been forgotten. Glad I chased it up now. A bit disappointed. Two loads of wheels due for delivery tomorrow for the Super Cub and the Beaver so they will be done first and a slight hint that Saturday may now be on for flying so batteries and transmitters will need to be charged as well. I would have set the stand out in the back garden to do the assembly but don't have that luxury as " prying eyes " from a less than ideal neighbour would probably see my shed emptied overnight. toto Posted February 18 Author Share Posted February 18 OK ..... so before I start ..... fair warning to those who don't like photo heavy " epic " posts ..... switch off now. For those who do ..... and have the popcorn and beer at the ready ..... here we go. Here is todays victim ... the Twotter .... and as I have read other assembly video's on this ..... I know to check the underside of the box for some of the parts. there are apparently four lots .... some are obvious ..... the front landing gear with attached direct drive servo. A bag with the spinners and associated screws .... magnetic nose cone .... and another view .... very nicely done. The rear landing gear .... plastic fairings .... circlips holding on the wheels. The big tip here is to add a dab of foam glue to this to try and prevent these coming off. more on that later. as ever .... the destructions ..... the vertical stabilisor .... packet of smokes for scale ..... humungous .... fully concealed plastic hinges ... feel very strong. two 11 x 7 ( from memory ) 3 blade props. two horiontal stabilisors ... again, concealed plastic hinges. very well done and a great finish allround. some velcrow strip I presume for the battery and a bag of screws and rods. three carbon tubes of varying sises and thicknesses. One for the wings, one for the horisontal stabilisor and one to join the tail piece to the fuselage. Two wing strutts, marked left and right .... these are some kind of mild steel. nicely painted. Wing number one .... again hidden hinges, nicely painted and finished. you can see the nacelle. The upper surface of the wing showing the hinge virtually hidden. the underside showing the hingey thingy. servo hatch which apparently comes off to give access to the servo for the flap. ditto the ailerons .... The nacelle with included motor and ESC inside. let there be lights .... and more lights .... times two even..... I believe these are " fences " ..... just not your garden type .... 😄 The wing connection with an XT60 battery connection and your various wire connections to servos and lights etc ..... The fuselage ..... lovely clear windows .... apparently ideal for FPV set ups .... getting nosey with the magnetic cone fitted .... flawless joint .... very nice. instrument panel inside the fuselage ..... inside the battery hatch ..... you could have a game of five asides inside there. The gubbins ...... seems to be plenty length on these cables. not sure what this is at the moment but I am sure the destructions will give up an explanation later... The rear of the fuselage ..... the tailplane slots into this including a carbon tube for added strength. The long shot again showing off the lovely clear windows and the wing root detail connections. the multi pin connector and the XT60 power connection .... The positions for nthe wing fixing screws .... two on each wing which screw down into brass machined fittings held in plastic supports .... very strong. the wing strut holding points with their associated screw currently screwed in place .... The undercarriage fixing plate held in with four screws , again .... looks pretty solid. Ok that is the spread of individual parts ..... now to get assembling ..... I'll maybe maiden her and see how she copes with these wheels before diving in to change them ......... Meanwhile ....... back at the ranch ....... the assembly was progressing ..... and here it is ...... another photo heavy post ..... Started with the main landing gear .... not the wings as the destructions suggest .... off with the four fixing screws ..... to reveal the slot for bedding in the landing gear ..... like so ...... back on with the cover and back in with the four fixing screws ..... job done ..... now the nose gear .... find the correct rudder cables for the steering servo .... not this one as this is longer and goes to the rear of the fuselage along with the elevator cable .... like this .... here we are ..... the connection cable is fished from the landing gear hatch to the main battery hatch for connection .... and any slack fed back into the fuselage ..... and the four fixing screws applied. It can only go in one way as directed by the artwork on the fuselage ..... and again ..... The elevators are attached to the tail plane via four screws. There is a plastic " boss " that protrudes from each elevator half that feeds through the middle to align both elevator halves. apologies that I never photographed this .... I should have just for clarity. and there we are again ..... connection of the elevator control rod via a ball joint... easy .... needed a little adjustment but no big deal .... same with the rudder..... fished the rudder and elevator cables down from the front of the fuselage where the receiver goes ..... here are their neighbours hiding in the tail plane ..... there is a little conveluted bit of wiring here and I am thinking this is something to do with the connection between the tailplane rudder connection and the rudder for the optional floats ..... which I don't have. I left it connected for now but may need to revisit this. the elevator connection..... and a clearer picture of what I was talking about with reference to the rudder connection. The rear of the fuselage is connected via the carbon rod that goes up the centre and two fixing screws .... one on the top .... and one on the bottom. All screws seem to be well explained throughout the destructions.... and here we are .... assembled .... on to the first wing ..... and I missed the boat here .... all will be explained ...... you have to pull the XT60 connection out a bit in order to get the purchase to connect ... no big deal its very easy. connection made ..... it slides back into its pocket in the main wing.... whey hey ..... but hold on ..... have you spotted the mistake ....... I did not install the wing supports ..... so back off with the wings and try again ...... then its on to the fitting of the props and spinners .... number one ..... and number two ..... and another ..... and another. One point to note is the hole in the prop had to be reamed out very slightly as there was no way it was going on otherwise. However, I have still managed to obtain a good tight fit. a shot outside with my Son ( man mountain ) holding up the tail as it was doing wheelies otherwise. and one last image for now ..... consider the basic assembly complete. I will need to look at the basic electrical set up now and possibly revisit the way the rudders have been wired and connected as it seems the current set up allows for the connection of the float rudder ( and the connection as it stands just now would make that live ) I don't know if I can leave it like that or if I should disconnect that part of the arrangement. Stopping for a coffee now ...... a well deserved coffee break. I may be back on later as I try to unravel the electrics. I'll start with a simple power up in order to centre the servos and make any physical adjustments that may be necessary prior to programming in rates or any other transmitter induced settings. I am also considering disconnecting the rear elevator and rudder links in case there are any severe movements when its first powered up and the servos do their initial setting. I have one of these fitted to the Otter ..... one end connects to the battery .... here is the other ...... apart from that I have the following ..... which I understand ok ....... Double throttle .... one for each ESC ..... Elevator, Rudder, Flaps and Ailerons ...... fine. What is the script with the connection of the red and black from the UBEC. ..... answers on a postcard please.... A separate BEC like that is used where you don't want to use a BEC built into an ESC, or your ESC doesn't have a BEC. Dick Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I centred the servo's prior to setting rates etc on the transmitter. Throttle cut set and flaps set. I still need to look at fail Safe and get my head around that.
