Xfly Twin Otter 1800mm PNP

Hi Learner,

 

I get your point. So far, the only one model that I may regret buying is the Edge 540. It is totally flying in the face ( excuse the pun ) of my interest area ( aerobatics is not reaaly me ). I just liked the look of it.

 

Grumpy, you have my idea. A couple of regular models to have in the car, one as a back up to negate a trip to the field only to find the gremlins have infiltrated one of them and therefore the loss of a flying opportunity.

 

 The SIM will take a bit of convincing yet as I do struggle to place myself in the correct view. It's the only thing that puts me off it otherwise I could become a bit of an addict.

Dont get me wrong. I always take a spare and if planning to stay the day a couple more but as youve realised, because of weather and only flying weekends, opportunities are limited.

If you've got 10 models  (or more 😉) with various battery configurations and only get 20 days available for whatever the reason, your favourite will be used regularly but others very rarely taken out.

Although I sold a few last year , I still have models that I've not flown for a year or more.

Well .......

 

I've been in the shed making room for the twin otter assembly. ...... Now my shed is a bit like a rubix cube .... you have to continually have to keep twisting it about to make your next move. So I have been repositioning completed models in order to make room for the Otter.

 

The shelving plan had been accomplished but i want to keep my model stand free of the otter for now as I have some replacement wheels coming for the Super Cub and the beaver. They are due anytime. So the plan is to change out the wheels for the Super Cub, then change out the wheels for the Beaver and replace the front cowl at the same time. You never know, maybe even the horisontal stabilisor might have arrived from the states for the Beaver as well and that can be tackled at the same time.

 

Once the wheels and cowl have been changed out ( an hours work ) I'll dedicate the model stand to the assembly of the Twin Otter. That will keep me going whilst we await a break in the weather ( hopefully ).

 

Thats the plan .... my guesstimated start date on the Twin Otter is Thursday  Friday of this week .... fingers crossed.

My plan has hit the skids already. 

 

I chased up my wheels order for both the Beaver and the Super Cub only to find they are just being despatched today.

 

What made me chase it up was when I read the order confirmation, it said " your order will be dispatched as soon as the items are in stock " .... I was a bit miffed as the items were stated as in stock so was actually expecting them on my doorstep by now as the order was made towards the back end of last week. 

 

So .... I phoned and got the " they are being dispatched today " routine. I suspect the order had been forgotten. Glad I chased it up now. A bit disappointed. I won't name the company but its not my normal " go to " Kings Lynne models.

 

May get them by Friday ..... if I'm lucky.

TheTwin Otter box has made its way to the surface tonight hopefully in readiness for the assembly. 

 

Two loads of wheels due for delivery tomorrow for the Super Cub and the Beaver so they will be done first and a slight hint that Saturday may now be on for flying so batteries and transmitters will need to be charged as well.

 

Could be a Busy night shift.

I've cleared the decks for the Otter assembly. 

 

Nice sunny day so Ican even leave the shed door open as I work. I would have set the stand out in the back garden to do the assembly but don't have that luxury as " prying eyes " from a less than ideal neighbour would probably see my shed emptied overnight. :classic_sad:

 

Anyway, I'm off to the shed shortly and shall post some images up later as I go.

circlips holding on the wheels. The big tip here is to add a dab of foam glue to this to try and prevent these coming off. more on that later.

Hi Learner .... maybe can't change the sise but can certainly get softer ones. the stock wheels are again .... brick hard. I'll maybe maiden her and see how she copes with these wheels before diving in to change them .........

The elevators are attached to the tail plane via four screws. There is a plastic " boss " that protrudes from each elevator half that feeds through the middle to align both elevator halves. apologies that I never photographed this .... I should have just for clarity.

there is a little conveluted bit of wiring here and I am thinking this is something to do with the connection between the tailplane rudder connection and the rudder for the optional floats ..... which I don't have. I left it connected for now but may need to revisit this.

One point to note is the hole in the prop had to be reamed out very slightly as there was no way it was going on otherwise. However, I have still managed to obtain a good tight fit.

and one last image for now ..... consider the basic assembly complete.

 

I will need to look at the basic electrical set up now and possibly revisit the way the rudders have been wired and connected as it seems the current set up allows for the connection of the float rudder ( and the connection as it stands just now would make that live ) I don't know if I can leave it like that or if I should disconnect that part of the arrangement.

 

Stopping for a coffee now ...... a well deserved coffee break. I may be back on later as I try to unravel the electrics. I'll start with a simple power up in order to centre the servos and make any physical adjustments that may be necessary prior to programming in rates or any other transmitter induced settings. I am also considering disconnecting the rear elevator and rudder links in case there are any severe movements when its first powered up and the servos do their initial setting.

 

Hope you have enjoyed the assembly so far.

What is the script with the connection of the red and black from the UBEC. ..... answers on a postcard please....

 

I will be using a Spektrum AR 6610 receiver on this as I have run out of AR 620's and I am not quite ready to try an Orange out for the first time as I have not got my head around the binding or setting up process with these yet and I'd rather not make this model the first.

I assume you plug it into the receiver to power the receiver and servos from the main battery. A separate BEC like that is used where you don't want to use a BEC built into an ESC, or your ESC doesn't have a BEC.

Connected up the various servo leads etc to the Spektrum AR6610 and all has went well with the binding. I centred the servo's prior to setting rates etc on the transmitter.

 

Throttle cut set and flaps set. I still need to look at fail Safe and get my head around that. More than likelt to have to return to elements of it for a final tune up. but happy to get this far .
