  1. Casatenovo, Lombardy, Italy. Currently I enjoy my lunchbreak in the office at Milan. (The weather cannot be enjoyed here at the moment - raining at 3°C) VA
  2. Sorry for your loss - As several others before me I recommend the use of a pre-paid card. I started to use a prepaid card since one year - this is not only a way to reduce the damage in case of fraud but also a possibility to avoid to be told off for spending too much on the hobby as in my case the movements from the prepaid card are invisible for the online banking housewife.   VA
  3. Erfolg,   you are spoiled living in a pretty organized country I suppose. I received a letter yesterday from my insurance company - asking for the annual payment - posted 14.12.2009. Last year some of the Christmas cards arrived in february. Snow on the roads: my record was 7h for 30km (home from work - which means I arrived home at 02:00). And this is not because snow is such a rare thing here - 20km from the place I live are the alps. Let the children stay at home for a few days - they enjoy it. Take it easy   VA
  4. only fingerless gloves otherwise you don't have the necessary feeling. To all cold weather pilots: Think not only about yourself also think about stiff grease in the servos and loss of capacity of cold batteries!   I have some warm water bottles in my battery box - helps for some time.   my record was flying at minus 8 - but after one hour all the fools flying at that conditions escaped into the next bar....    VA
  5. Find below a list what I flew with this battery size (unfortunately some of the birds are history now ) Extra 260 mini (Fliton) Katana mini (Precision Aerobatics) Acromaster (Multiplex) YAK 54 1160mm (MEX) Edge 540 EP (Seagull) Sukhoi 29 30E (Sebart) Mephisto (Reichardt) or if you look into helis: most of the 450 sizes as for instance Mini Titan (Thunder Tiger)   In some of the modells slightly smaller (Extra 260) or bigger (Edge 540) batteries are recommended - but they fly wihout problems with 3 cells 2200.     VA
  6. 1  Mode 2 now , mode 1 when I started 2  Lombardy, Italy 3  Vienna, Austria 4  Self taught     VA
  7. started with mode 1 some 30 years ago - changed to mode 2 when restarted some years ago. So the break was long enough not to get confused. For my opinion: if it comes to helicopters mode 2 is the better one. For planes it is more or less the same. May be mode one has an advantage when hand launching a plane. (as you are on the elevator with you left hand) VA
  8. Myron,    magnetic force is determined by Current (Amps) x number of windings. so you get the same magnetic force from 10 windings at 10 Amps as from 100 windings at 1 Amp. VA
  9. Some major points are missing in this chat: Advantages: The system searches automatically for a free channel - so you never have to check for a free channel and nobody will disturb your radio. Much more tolerant for interference from electric motors or ignition systems.   Antenna short on the transmitter and very short on the receiver.  It is normally inside the fuselage and therefore invisible. Disadvantages: As the frequency is much higher the behavior of the radio waves is rater similar to a light beam. If the model is behind a hill it will not receive the signal any more. (don't laugh - especially with gliders in some mountainous area it may happen that the model is out of sight for a second or two when you try to find a save place to land it when you cannot make it to the top of the slope any more) Conductive material as carbon fibre or aluminium parts may disturb the receiver. It is important to find the optimum position for the receiver / antenna on the model. (think of carbon fibre fuselage on some gliders). This is also the reason why some brands use satellite receivers (Spektrum) on their full range gear. The voltage for the receivers is critical - always use fully charged batteries of suitable capacity.  VA  Edited By Vecchio Austriaco on 31/12/2009 07:47:13
  10. Hugh, further up you wrote you have trouble with your TX DX7 - loosing signal. Ever thought to send it to HH? had the same problem - lost 3 models and sent the TX = receiver to HH - came back repaired with the comment output power was too low...  Its fine now. I check sometimes with the flightlog - everything fine, almost no disturbance during flight. May be worth a try to send it for a checkup. VA
  11. Was flying the seagull edge 540 EP these days - with and without skis. It is absolutely the wrong color scheme fore these days. (white - mint - blue). Difficult to see it against grey sky and grey-green mountains. I suppose the right one should be red-yellow. Something you will not find in nature around you.   VA
  12. Ross, get the extensions only. With the DX7 you can mix the aileron asymmetric if needed and you also have the possibility to use the aileron as flaps. So both control surfaces are going down or up which could be used for instance during landing. Not to forget that you can trim each side separately during set-up which may help.  With an Y cable you don't have any of these functions.  By the way - I use  a DX7 myself. VA
  13. Hi Lee,   are you sure we speak about the same model? I know there are minimum 3 versions under this brand. Mine is the smallest - if you go into the "ARTF Survey" and look at MEX YAK 54 1160mm  you can see the beauty and read about the trouble I had during maiden flight.    I stil fly it ( at the moment it is under repair, respraying the canopy for the 3rd time), it looks good, and as long as it is fast enough and nothing brakes off in the air it flies also...    The uc mount I changed as well as I rebuilt the first 40 cm of the fuselage after a nice crash.   VA
  14. Slow flyer: Worst Giles 202 by Thunder Tiger - underpowered, breaks easy, instructions not too clear Best: Shark 800 biplane VA-models -  easy to fly, extremly acrobatic, doesn't fall apart on the first rough landing    Glider: Worst Discus cs CM pro quality of fuselage, angel between wing and tail wrong. Best Roitelet Acro (don't remember the company - had it 25 years ago)   Sports/acro: Worst Yak 54 Model Expert material quality (motor castle broke during maiden flight (you will not believe it - after my repair the motor castle broke again) stalls quite easy and rather nasty Best Sukhoi 29 30E Sebart. Good build quality flies very precise   VA
  15. Got spoilt as well. Even it was not the big surprise (prefer ordering myself ). Got an Extra 300S 60 size plus a 91 4stroke engine. Will take me a while to put the stuff together as I will change design of the bird.
  16. Hi, I recommend the Sebart Shark, it is a low wong trainer, wingspan 1570mm, weight 1700g, engine Hacker A30 14l or similar, works with 3 cells 2500 to 3500 mAh.   The plane is an acrobatic traner with a special wing design.     Personally I did not fly it, but I have extremly positive experience with the Sukhoi 29 30e from the same company  (1300mm wingspan, low wing acro/3d). These machines are extremely accurate in flying. Maiden flight: practically nothing to trimm.  Design Italian, manufactured China. Build quality: Best ARTF I ever had. Same with my sons Angel 50. (the Angel50 is too big for you as it alredy uses a 6S lipo pack)      Greetings from rainy Italy.  VA   P.S.: Have a look at this website for more info. http://www.sebart.it/    Edited By Vecchio Austriaco on 23/12/2009 10:26:22
  17. Speaking about getting white and whiter - just came home from work (it's already 22:08 here) we have about 30cm of the white stuff - and it is still snowing heavily at -4°C. Hope the stuff is patient and waits for me until I have time to go to my airfield again....   VA
  18. We are close to the alps - so there is one or the other day every year with some cover of snow. Last year we had "usefull" snow for 2 weeks - after a few days the surface gets a bit rough from sun and wind - but it was still good enough to fly. Fun:  You can fly in these conditions only on a few days per year - so this adds an extra portion of fun.   Some pictures from last winter  You see how rough the surface is, but no probem to take off from that   Main problem is the temperature. Yesterday we flew only 2 times each and then the whole gang of mad pilots ( we were 5 in total ) moved from the airfield to the next coffee shop were we stayed much longer.... Today: Actual temperature at 8:20 local time: -8,5°C So I will wait a bit before going out.... VA Edited By Vecchio Austriaco on 20/12/2009 07:30:30
  19. I could not resist to fly in this conditions so I put skis on my edge and went to the field with my son.      look at     http://www.modelflying.co.uk/albums/member_album.asp?a=9101   I can confirm the findings of Martin Harris - also my plane tipped over leaving some characteristic prop marks in the snow. Obviously the snow was too soft.  And my son pressed the trigger of the camera at the righ time. you can see the plane landed - and then slowly tipping over.   By the way - all ok - the prop didn't even break..   of course we will go tomorrow again!   ciao VA  Edited By Vecchio Austriaco on 19/12/2009 20:56:50 Edited By Vecchio Austriaco on 19/12/2009 21:01:08
