  1. Paul try the route M6 north to Penrith and then East across on the A66 toward Barnard Castle and on toward TEEside just a suggestion dave
  2. just a quick comment on composites, having had extensive experience in the materials and resins. They are very strong and tough but, if you abuse them you can expect failures such has been described, de-lamination and fracture in some cases. I have found over the years that peoples expectations of composites is that they are indestructable and last forevevernot true even inthe full size aviation field there are many unanswered questions in relation to composites and the research and development is ongoing.Just my twopennorth. Dave
  3. NO need to apologise steve everyone deserves a rant ,I too worked all my life never asking for anything from the establishment (wouldnt have got it anyway )unfortunately benefit is a way of life for some and they sure know how to use the system and just like our illustrious leaders they have done no wrong etc
  4. IPA (isopropyl alcohol) is used as a deicing fluid on aicrcraft, and cars, IPN is used as a cetane improver in model deisel fuel, also used as a liquid starter for early jet engines. Amyl Nitrate as mentioned a heart stimulant ,glyceryl trinitrate is now used for relief of angina and is the same chemical formula as nitro glycerine with an additive which prevents explosion with a sharp shock. Acetone is by far the best de-greasing agent but as mentioned wear the appropriate PPe eg marigold glove and fume mask not nice stuf but effective
  5. Welcome to the forum Mark, all the models you mention are very good trainers I have had the Boomerang and the Wot Trainer if thats what you mean, and also the DB Mascot The first two are ARTF and require minimal assembley, the Mascot is a good quality kit a bit more involved but as you mentioned you are a modeller so it shouldnt pose any real issues and in my honest opinion is the best option. The choice of radio guidance is a good starter but if finances can stretch a bit further go for something which gives you flexibility for the future e.g. flaps retracting u/c.Iam very happy with my Hitec Aurora 9and my Futaba 6 channel radio.I cant comment on other brands but many years ago I was a fan of JR gear.As cymaz and John said, get into a local club go and visit Good luck Dave
  6. Gents, the material mentioned in this post is Graphine, developed at Manchester Uni it has been around for awhile now, together with another carbon phenomenen carbon nano tubes. they are already influencing the way Engineers think (mechanical and electronic)
  7. The Tonka provided me with a very well paid job, when I needed it most ,in the Middle East. It paid for my house in cash with some left over. The Tornado was a brilliant A/c to work on.the only real awkward area was zone 19 on the IDS
  8. absolutely briliant, the Canuks really do things very well.
  9. Just checked the forecast ,and it looks pretty reasonable for Saturday, if it rains I can go to the museum earlier or spend more time in the stalls, or take a big fishing brolly no problems I,M GOING FOR SURE, Wouldnt miss it for the world Dave
  10. Some excellent commonsense comments on this issue thanks to stu k ,wright stuff and perce verance and others .My slant on the issue is that ! We should all take responsibility for our own well being and safety, we are living in a massively risk averse society nowadays, but if we take too much notice of all the do gooders we would do diddley squat, and just sit around getting fat dumb and miserable, there are a few contributers on this site who fall into the category Iv,e just mentioned I,ll say no more Dave
  11. IT IS A 362 DESIGNED BY PETER MILLER ,GOOD FUN, EASY TO BUILD, GREAT FLYER AND WITH MODERN ELECTRONIC MIXING, MAKES ELEVONS A PIECE OF CAKE TO INSTALL YOU WILL LOVE IT.PLANS AVAILABLE FROM THE X LIST DAVE
  12. I notice that this stuff is available at Maplins now ,for anyone who is interested Dave
  13. A simple solution to all this is to buy a drawing,or draw up your own, make up your kit of parts, build model and adjust to fit as necessary no problem ,simples no complaints, no criticizing other peoples efforts.Learn to build and adapt otherwise go down the route of getting someone willing to do the job (deep sucking of breath thatll cost yer )or stay with the ARTFs Dave
  14. I,ve used all manner of restraints on model A/c over the years but the best by far is the Aeropult The aircraft is restrained forward and aft and leaves both hands free.even for large A/C, very reliable a little expensive at just over £100 but my fingers and hands are worth much more to me.Iv,e seen the results of of slashed fingersand hands too often what needs to be worked on now is safely connecting up some of the electric models.BTW Happy new year to all forumites, lets hope we all get a good flying season in 2014 Dave
  15. I really feel for those of you who have to justify indulging in a hobby which is both rewarding and keeps you out of the good ladies hair .If you sat around moping and bored especially during the long dark days of winter I,m sure something would be said in some sort of sarky manner, such as,' haven't you got anything better to do than sitting around with a face like a smacked bottom' Remember lads a model is not just for Christmas but for life{of the model} . If its not broke ,don't fix it, if its broke, have a go at fixing it just be wary and use a little common sense cos that's all the fundamental of H&S is anyway May you all have a Happy and shedly 2014 Dave
  16. please toss my name in the hat, I,good at making up the numbers. Merry Christmas All
  17. It really doesn't matter which system is used providing the appropriate measuring stick is used
  18. Dane, I too started infants school in the early fifties at 4 not quite 5. I didnt have any probs as far as being messy and I wasn't forced t o use my right hand, my teachers must have been progressive for the times, the greatest gift bestowed on me was being taught to read and understand, and to be encouraged to persevere in more difficult books with lots of hard words, and not to be frightened to question things. I was humiliated in my second year of junior school for messy writing with ink and eventually was allowed to use a biro but i was best at reading and sums, writing is still not my forte even now but who cares I,m retired now
  19. Left handed for writing and anything that requires accuracy, but can mix and match as the the situation dictates.I,m in agreement with Martin on this in regard to nurture. in regard to the brain organisation I can display traits from both sides. My daughter is primarily a lefty but is extremely adaptable. Could it be that lefties have to adapt to what I see as primarily a right hand world.Look at the position of the card reader in the supermarket as an example Dave Edited By sticky fingers on 11/12/2013 10:38:48
  20. Kev, your best option is to have a chat with the very helpful people at Just Engines Dave
  21. Sorry to hear your news, it must be getting near Christmas again, good luck with the job search ,just retired myself but had a heart attack just b4 retirement date so, as wth your good self everything is a bit daunting to say the least best of luck Dave
  22. Can confirm Aarton Senna flew RC,came to our field in Adelaide hosted by Leo O Reilly back in the eighties
  23. Looks like eveyone had a cracking weekend, great looking models on show, must build something better than my current fleet of general hacks for such occasions.Hope the weather is as cooperative as it has been for the 24 June event ,really looking forward to it Dave
  24. BEB, I have been of the understanding that ,under common law ,trespass is not a crime in itself. Intent must be proven,I read this some years ago in a publication on Common Law,and to my knowledge it still applies.I dont want to get involved in a lengthy discussion the ins and outs of law ,just putting my comments in on what I have read in the past. Dave
  25. I had exactly the same experiencein regard to shortages of 3/16 square and had to purchase 6 more lengths.Trying to contact the supplier (BB) was an utter waste of time. The finished model is a brilliant flyer which is a bonus but its put me off buying kits,I,ll stick with plans and do my own quantity surveying Dave Edited By sticky fingers on 19/04/2013 21:40:18
