  1. I talk to myself, telling me which way the Plane should turn, and apply the controls accordingly - works for me with controls and all directions
  2. I have fitted a set on my Bixler 2 as per the instructions, and found they pivoted backwards when landing due to lack of support internally. I then epoxied in two small blocks of foam fore and aft of the axle frame to lock it in position and added more epoxy round the axle and all is fine now. A 2200 battery still fits in quite easily.
  3. I have fitted the HK Bixler 2 undercarriage to mine as per the instructions and beefed it up internally by putting a solid foam block behind where it protrudes into the fuselage and using epoxy to stiffen it all up. The U/C is certainly strong enough, but it definately needs the slot it fits into beefing up. A 2200 battery still sits in the right place. The HK U/C is very cheap and well worth the addition. ( I bought several as they are a good fit for other models I have) I found the Bixler 2 dipped quite noticeably when hand launched ( pusher prop) and even though I mixed in "up elevator" to "throttle" to counteract the prop, the knock on effect was that when the throttle was opened up at height, the plane tended to then balloon. With the U/C in place, everything is now under control.........If you have not done so, put the flaps in, landings ( and take-offs) are a doddle! David P
  4. I have a couple of Bixler 2 models, one with the optional wheels, and find that with use of the flaps and in any degree of headwind, they will come in at walking pace and land themselves - very controllable. Putting a few degrees of flap on will enable you to slow the plane down whilst gliding in and giver more time for getting the landing set up, before more flaps for landing, in my case, a little over 45 degrees. I have slowed down the flap deployment and mixed in elevator to ensure a steady and predictable rate of sink. With just a little bit of practise they can be brought in at your feet nearly every time........... I found that it was necessary to add some support internally to where the wheels sit with a foam block but a 2200 battery still sits comfortably in the bay. The wheels were added to combat the dip on hand launching, although I initially mixed in elevator to compensate for that, it was via the throttle, and when the throttle was opened up at altitude, the plane tended to balloon, so, adding wheels meant that the take-off was more controllable and no ballooning higher up as there was no need to mix in elevator - hope that makes sense! 5. Although I have a DX8, I hope this may be helpful: Over the weekend I programmed and maidened my Bixler 2, Flaps were put onto the Gear and Aux channels and one of them reversed, I used the F mode switch to operate a two position flap. I initially had problems as the servo horns and control rods were binding in the foam. After some cutting out of foam the movement I achieved was in the region of 45 degrees plus, fully down. Standard 9gm servos used as well as an Orange 6 Ch Rx. A friend and I spent about 30 minutes and several flights trimming and getting the C o G correct and also mixing in "up elevator" on the throttle for launch and "down elevator" with the flaps. From about 30 yards out/up, we genuinely had two "hands off" landings, with no control input, no throttle and flaps fully deployed. The model came in at less than walking pace and very gently arrived on the grass! Packed up at that stage as the rain came down. There was minimal wind. 2200 lipo used. If it is of use I can Email the settings used.
  6. Depends upon the speed/flow, whichever is the higher will influence your decision - do take into consideration the "apparant wind" if the current is dominant...............
  7. If it is Depron you are using- Uhu POR
  8. In the mid 60's, I used to take my control line models to Mitcham common and my FFGlider up to Epson Downs in the panniers of my BMW R50............., became more interested in Trials and Enduros and the planes faded away - came back two years ago, just after my Yamaha XT500 was sold!
  9. Thanks for reply, I take your point, perhaps I will have to wait for a change of wind direction............
  10. Has anyone any thoughts on the following; Am in Spain, flying for the first time outside of our house with One of Tom's Pipe Laggers. Twice now I have lost signal in virtually the same place, about 30/50m above two low level power lines and about 150m away. When bringing the plane back to base, everything working! New batteries in Tx and 50% left on Rx battery. I Am using an Orange Rx that performed fine in the UK. Is it likely that the power lines are interfering with the signal? David
  11. Not sure whether the following might help in explaining some actions: My son lives in HK and during the summer I asked him to pick up some bits from the warehouse, as per their web site, and bring over to the UK some days later on his summer trip.  No access to website number, (it is a Chinese No.), from HK (no one knows why) but via a number of emails and "chats" from here, it was arranged for him to visit the warehouse, which is in the New Territories, to pick up the stock. He eventually made contact himself, and over a period of two days managed to get an assurance the goods were onsite, having to be shipped in from Mainland China. Appears the warehouse is run by a European, but a lot of stock is shipped in from China on an "as required" basis. Son got the impression they were sourced from various Suppliers. The Chinese culture is often one of not losing face in any situation and will readily agree to whatever you say, something we have experienced when visiting and ordering goods in the shop, next day becomes the day after etc.............All goods were in fact ready when he collected, and eventually, I also received a refund in respect of the automatic postage charge I had incurred. It all worked out fine, but took a little time!  I guess you pays your money.......................
  12. FB3: I make sure the four screws for the motor mounts are vertical and horizontal, that way, washers behind the mounts can easily produce the off-set for the engine thrust lines. Not being particularly experienced at this, If it flies, it's OK.  I have also tried to cut the foam on the angle to produce the off-set for the thrust lines (with a bread knife of course) and also similarly sanded the engine mount to produce said offset, but they seem to fly perfectly well regardless of what I do.............just too much fun.   When I get back to the UK, and create some space at home, I intend to give the twin boom a go,
  13. I have made four of these, and set the 3 degree incidence as follows: Fuselage on flat surface, prop up the rear by about 1/4" with scrap and viewing from the side, move scrap backwards and forwards to lift or lower the rear of the fuselage until tit sits 3 or 4 degrees from the horizontal. I then put a ruler on the flat surface and block it upwards, parallel to the surface, until top of the ruler is where the cut for the wing should be, mark with a biro/felt tip and then cut into foam with knife/razor. repeat with other side. Any unevenness is levelled off with scrap balsa along foam tube for the wing to sit on.  Angle is not critical. All mine have flown extremely well much to the disgust/surprise/amazement of other club members...........
  14. Tom has built in an amazing safety device into the design of these little gems which I have only just discovered! Tonight whilst flying, I lost the signal and the PL just circled round slowly losing height and disappeared behind some trees into a local County Council Youth Outdoor Centre. On driving round into the Centre, we found the PL had parked itself perfectly on its wheels, on a grass bank beside the car park with not the slightest bit of damage. A range check there and then showed plenty of signal and everything worked!!  I had the recommended C of G at 40% and I guess that this had enabled the PL to float down perfectly safely.  However, we are only about 400 yards from the edge of HMS Daedalus, an airfield used by the Coast Guard Helicopter here on the Solent and have lost signal twice before in exactly the same spot - clue there somewhere.
  15. Tom, Are you using the original PL specs for fuselage, tailplane, wing position etc?  All interchangeable.........  David
  16. Tom, I have glued the two side of the dart wing together against the keel and it seems awfullyflimsy -does the addition of the pipe lagging top and bottom stiffen the whole lot up?  David
  17. Got to our flying field this morning with PL and both wings! Slightly bemused/amused looks from club members already there, put it together with the tipped dihedral wing and was asked by Instructor friend whether he should launch it as I have only just gone solo again.   I declined!  It was hand launched into a bit of a gusty breeze. It flew beautifully in a nose up aspect against the wind and level down wind, and after about five minutes I landed it at walking pace or less in the wind to a round of applause from the six members who had come up behind me to watch "that thing fly" Swopped wings to the standard dihedral and got the loops in to another round of applause. I then managed several take off and landings, all pretty good with the Pl just floating down, and landing as it should. I came home with the biggest grin on my face for many a year!  Thanks Tom - it was terrific!
  18. Good evening Tom,  Being quite new at this and fascinated by your model, a question; does the wing have any camber, or is it just slightly sanded at the LE and TE reducing to match the balsa struts? Would there be any problem in gluing two sheets of 3mm Depron together to make the wing? I have plenty of 3mm but no 6mm........  If I use 3mm Depron, would it be advantageous to introduce any form of camber into the wing by introducing a longeron between the sheets, or am I trying to make life to difficult for myself?  David
  19. I would love the opportunity to learn to fly a helicopter, at my age it is the only opportunity I will get...........  David
  20. Am domiciled in the Murcia Region of Spain for two more months and have just ordered my Webbit to be delivered out here to give me something to do . Am virtually a complete novice, but who cares.......  Can I take this opportunity to publicaly praise Ann at SWM who has answered my Emails virtually by return, including over this last weekend, and given guidance and advice re shipping the kit and several associated bits and pieces out here. What a lovely lady................  David Perkins
