  1. What is a 'tread', in this context? Should it read 'thread'? Edited By Prop Nut on 07/06/2014 19:45:09
  2. I've had no luck with buying or selling through either BMFA or Modelflying classifieds, but I've sold a lot of items on Ebay with no trouble. However, the latter have now become very greedy with their fees and you need, more than ever, to factor them in to the prices you will accept. I also find that 'Buy it Now' will often sell an item when auction won't, presumably because many people want to know they've secured the purchase immediately, rather than wait for the auction to end and fail to make the winning bid.
  3. Douglas, I have just done this on my 9xII. I was doubtful about doing it myself, but Steve Roberts at MacGregor assured me it was easy - and it was. The screen is fixed with double-sided tape (already attached on the replacement). On taking off the case rear cover, I photographed the layout and removed the plugs needed to reach the back of the screen. It then needs a little thumb pressure to get the old screen out (mine came away very cleanly), then remove the backing from the adhesive tape, line up the new screen and gently press into position. Then refit the various plugs and switch on, but don't forget to fit a screen protector afterwards! It's a cheap and easy fix.
  4. Don't know why you were so hesitant BEB; I buy regularly from the US and find them rather more switched on about international deliveries than most, plus I've only been hit for VAT and RM's mickey-taking 'admin fee' a handful of times, so it's clearly a random process. I had a similar problem a while back, needing a Spektrum item that was unavailable anywhere in the UK, ordered it on Friday and received it following Wednesday, at two-thirds the delivered cost of the UK item - if it had been in stock.
  5. I don't think the programme did justice to a very remarkable man. It was a typical BBC documentary - disjointed, slapdash, lacking chronological progression and leaving questions unanswered. I've read many biographies of Second World War fighting airmen, including RN carrier pilots like Norman Hanson, 'Hank' Adlam and John Wellham, and was looking forward to learning more about Eric Brown. It's hard to take a programme seriously that, as Brown describes seeing a Marauder being shot down, shows film of a four-engined B17 under attack. At least I can get the book to read the full story.
  6. Model Radio Workshop can probably help Here but Martin's suggestion may be cheaper.

  8. Couldn't agree more. My nearest LMS are not a great advertisement for the trade, so I buy from a limited number of online model shops (still somebody's LMS, of course), and Model Accessories are one. Efficient, helpful and keen pricing.
  9. Dave Burton made me do a double-take on page 90, under 'The Quest for Speed' paragraph heading, where he mentions the DH9, the Vickers Vimy and the Bristol Snipe. I've never heard of the last one. Is he mixing up the Bristol F.2B (which lived well into the 1930s in both military and civil aviation) with the Sopwith Snipe, or is this a Bristol model that has passed me by?
  10. Perhaps someone will tell us when any of the other parties get a clue about what they're doing! Edited By Prop Nut on 22/05/2014 14:58:36 I agree in the principal of a protest vote but don't feel UKIP are deserving of it. Their racist xenophobia reflects poorly on a country with a proud tradition of tolerance and acceptance and shames us all. We once stood alone against fascism, now we appear to want to embrace it with open arms. Like the tolerance and acceptance that Nigel Farage got in Edinburgh, when he was told to 'go home to England'?

  12. I raised this very point long ago, but still nothing seems to have been done about it.
  13. Although I've never needed to use an exhaust gasket on any of my engines (all OS), some of our American cousins recommend manilla folder material or playing cards - at last, a use for the jokers in a new pack!
  14. Don't know about the Daily Mail, John, but despite their sniffy attitude to it the Guardian are selling the boxed DVD set of all eight series of 'It Ain't Half Hot Mum' - funny how they find it so easy to suppress their principles when there's money's to be made. Still, they have to pay Polly Toynbee somehow.
  15. Where did you source the Lado retracts Bob? None of the three UK distributors listed by Lado even show them as stocked (one's website doesn't even exist).
  16. Mine has an OS .91 Surpass with about 12 ozs in the nose to balance correctly. Not sure how much difference there is between the glow and petrol engines. The stated throws ARE in each direction; so aileron (low rate) is 1/2 inch up from neutral and 1/2 down from neutral - 1 inch movement from fully up to fully down.
  17. I must have been very lucky. The H9 P47 was my first model with retracts and I was prepared, from what I'd heard, for a struggle to get them working correctly. However, I just connected everything up and they worked perfectly first time, with no adjustment necessary. Maybe I should now be worried for next time!
  18. Commiserations Terry. French music like Morrissey's? Mon Dieu! Zut alors!
  19. Always Classic FM - it calms the fevered brow of this incompetent but determined builder. Radio 3 is too BBC - plummy voices, long silences and excruciatingly cacophonous avant-garde 'music'.
  20. I've had several, including Dynatron, but found it too heavy and agricultural. I returned it for an Align starter, which is light, will start a 1.20 easily and is of good engineering quality. The LiPo seems to last forever between charges.
  21. Interesting that JR comes out so low against Futaba and Spektrum. In my club a large majority use JR, although many are the older models like the DSX9.
  22. I cleaned mine up with fine wet and dry then used Plastikote aerosol metal primer, from B&Q, followed by their white aerosol paint. That was about five years ago and it hasn't needed repainting yet. Edited By Prop Nut on 16/04/2014 08:40:06
  23. I won the Spanish National Lottery twice last year, according to my emails, despite never buying a ticket, but didn't bother giving my bank details as I wouldn't know what to do with 10 million Euros. I've also had reports of problems with my NatWest bank account, although I've never had an account with them in my life. As for those Viagra offers...
  24. I do understand that, for many people, aeromodelling is largely about building and it can give great satisfaction. I built rubber-powered and control-line kits as a youngster but didn't get into R/C until well into middle-age. With all the demands of career, home and family, I'd have spent months building a trainer, crashed it, not been able to fly whilst I built a new one, and would probably have given up. ARTFs made it possible for me to get into the hobby and, just as importantly, stay in it. Now, having assembled a dozen ARTFs I have more time and have completed an Acro Wot from a kit and thoroughly enjoyed doing it. Next, I hope to build from a plan. I've had to acquire new knowledge and skills, which is why I read everything I can on building tips and techniques, but would never have got to this point without ARTFs. But, when all is said and done, I'm a crinkley too!
