  1. Hi John, My club is not BMFA affiliated. I only joined the BMFA this year and have read the test schedule for the A certificate. I have configured the Apprentice to meet the schedule but was confused as to why it was not suitable, I will certainly ask the senior member the next time I am at the flying site. As my club has no BMFA examiners I hope to take the test a another local club.
  2. Many thanks JM and Erfolg - The club of which I am a member distinguishes between IC and Elect, however I have weighed the Apprentice, using a fishing scale and strops with flight battery fitted it indicates 1.39kg.
  3. I have only been flying since Jun last year and have passed my clubs proficiency test which allows me to fly without an instructor at out field. I would like to do my BMFA A certificate but I have been told by a senior club member that my e-flite Apprentice is not a suitable model to take the test. I replaced the original gyro assisted receiver with a standard Spektrum AR400 4-channel receiver 5 months ago, so no assistance from the SAFE mode. I intend to do the A certificate test at another club can anyone offer advice as to the suitability of my Apprentice.
  4. Careful reading is required before checking/unchecking boxes, if however you make an error you should on receipt of any marketing mail shot be able to unsubscribe, and there should be a button or link to do this on the e-mails you receive.SWMBO joined a sewing magazine web-site by registering, she was not able to log in and contacted them, they said they had fixed the problem but she never managed to log in,however she was bombarded with marketing mail shots from them. So she tried the unsubscribe button and it did not work, after e-mailing the editor and a number of other individuals asking them to remover her from their mailing list with out success she informed them that she would contact the Information Commissioner's Office **LINK** she has never received a marketing mail shot from them again.
  5. I use plasterboard, I got mine at B&Q as they sell ready cut sheets 24" x 48" just right for my small car
  6. Having read the above comments and with the prospect of a 60 mile round trip to my LMS with no guarantee that they would have all the wood I needed I decide to use SLEC. I can only concur with the comments posted, the service is excellent, I ordered Friday morning and the wood arrived Monday at 08:10.
  7. My local model shop is Lancaster models 39 miles one way, usually combine a visit with SWMBO shopping expedition, about 4 times a year. Steve Webb is next nearest at 65 miles.
  8. Not much swearing at all in my club there are occasions where for want of a precise technical term a member will use a generalisation in the anglo-saxon vernacular to describe something that is not working.
  9. Why not do as other clubs/organisations do and ask members to provide a stamp addressed envelope with their renewal fees.
  10. Would it be safe to put the batteries in a fire proof box and keep them indoor, with the box located on a tiled floor?
  11. If it were not for electric I would be excluded from the hobby, I have no garage or suitable outhouse in which to store IC aircraft or fuel. I really would not consider storing these in the house (I don't think the Boss would let me). I have learned to fly over the past six months at my local club, and they have on occasion let me fly the club IC model, but I am committed to electric for the reason previously stated. Each of us has our own opinions and reasons for the models we buy whether it is IC/Electric/RTF/Quad/or other. Fortunately for me there is no real debate at my club as to which is best, only that the members enjoy the friendship and flying experiences all types are welcome. I have 3 foam RTF?ARTF models, and have successfully built and flown two traditional build models with a third on the bench and at least two others waiting to be built.
  12. Hi Rodo, You could try this Belgian guy he appears to be keen on vintage kits and has lots of svenson ; **LINK**
  13. Hi Dave, I always power up in the pits, letting the apprentice go through its routine of control movements and arming of the motor which finishes with the beeps. In fact the gyro does not work until the throttle is advanced from idle. The gyros then stay active irrespective of throttle position until the apprentice is switched off. I have been flying this since March, I wondered if there was a programming error
  14. Hi Scott - have you had any problems since this posting? I have had trouble with uncommanded control movement on the ground, even though the apprentice has successfully completed its set up routine. The ailerons for some reason go to full left bank on application of power. The most recent uncommanded control movement being this Monday unfortunately I had just taken-off and no amount of right stick would prevent the apprentice from banking left, contact with the ground was inevitable. I was flying on the 'Experienced' setting, and have been since August. The apprentice is repairable and I am going to disconnect the Tx/Gyro and fit a standard 4 channel Tx. I was surprised to find that 'Wheelspin Models' had a cowel and motor mount in stock, perhaps others have had a similar experience.
  15. I also had difficulty getting the solder to stick. I now clean the wire with a dry scouring pad, pre-tinned copper wire (available from CPC) and silver solder (from Maplins), and a 100W iron. So far the results have been good.
  16. Hi Keith, I have had about six or seven of these, they are not all the same, one asks you to update your e-mail account. I have followed BT's advice from their web-page and forwarded them to [email protected]. As a precaution I never click the link in any e-mail from retailers/banks/etc. I always log on via their web address to check
  17. Hi, I just started out this year, I too wanted something to build and then learn to fly I chose a Flair SE5a Believe me this was a mistake, it is still in the box waiting for the time when I have the skills to build it and fly it. Fortunately I was gives some advice and I bought an eflite Apprentice RT, it has been a good model to learn on. To learn the basic skills of model construction I used the free plan from one of the model magazines to build a "Sassy" which I have completed and flow successfully. I now feel confident to build and fly something larger.
  18. My club also applies the ic / elect division of if you take your field test with ic you can operate elect, but not the other way round. I suppose this is more to do with pit safety. The club does recognise the different safety issues with elec. As for the A test as others have previously said it makes no difference. I must stress this is a field test to allow members to fly solo and not an A test.
  19. I am a newbie and learning to fly with an electric trainer. If not for electrical power I could not pursue the hobby as I have nowhere to store engines, fuel, etc. About 20% of my club members fly only electric, and of the remaining 80% almost all fly a mixture of IC/Elect. In my humble opinion it is not about which is best, but more about what is possible and enjoying the hobby.
  20. Not sure how much you need. I got mine at Maplins
  21. Each to their own its all about personal choice, I am a 'newbie', and this thread does not put me off. I will still use my hand held fag packet sized camera, but am always willing to learn from others.
  22. Hi Simon, I am just starting out with the hobby and as such am a complete novice. On the advice of a colleague I decided to build a Flair Cub as my first ever build. I have been following your build blog which has proven to be invaluable to me. Have you completed the build? If so any chance you could post any images you have as these would be a great help. Kevin
