  1. Posted by john stones 1 on 27/01/2019 00:22:11: Already stated I had attended workshops, I have the picture of the apple pie to prove it. Interesting post Peter, could open ups lots of discussion, but not what I asked. 2 phrases "continued competency" "Initial phase" Then my question, anyone know what happens to those that do not attend ? if anything ? See the December edition, page 54 "it was also agreed that in the first instance, any system would be on an entirely voluntary basis i.e. there would be no formal requirement at this stage"
  2. Posted by Jon - Laser Engines on 22/01/2019 13:37:40: if memory serves chucking them in a bucket of salty water over night discharges them to nothing. They can then be taken to the dump or wherever else your local battery collection point is. No! From the BMFA Battery Safety Booklet: One thing that must be stated is that the widespread suggestion that disposal should be preceded by degradation in a bucket of salt water is not now recommended. This process adds Lithium salts to the water, and the disposal of this through our normal drainage systems is likely to affect the work of our Water Authorities, who use Lithium as a trace element when locating leaks. At the time of writing, the best available disposal procedure is via the local authority Environment and Waste department...... Steve I'd suggest that you have a proper read of the booklet available here.
  3. That list is for civilian airfields only. Military airfields with Air Traffic Zones will also have the restrictions.
  4. Chris You may want to download the manual here for the Dx9. On page 29 there are the instructions for the sequencer that are missing from the Dx8e manual.
  5. A bit late to the party but I've electrified the WOT 4 Pro. The worst part was cutting a top hatch - measure 4 times cut once and then fit magnet closures. The model was intended as a winter hack so I specifically wanted a top hatch rather than having to invert the model in the mud to change the batteries. Mine's fitted with an AXI 2826/10, 10x8 prop, 60A ESC & 4S 2700 batteries. The battery carrier is the option one from the GP/EP version which fitted directly. CG came out spot on with no ballast (I don't know which version you flew Dennis but mine has built up tail surfaces, as does even Pro I've seen). AUW RTF is 1.88kg (about 4.1lbs) & power output is just over 700 watts. And it flies like a WOT 4. I've had just about every variant of the standard size since it was first produced & this is up there with the best of them. Recommended.
  6. The plug is a standard 2S JST-XH balance lead plug. Obtainable from EBay & most specialist electric flight retailers. If you don't want to mess about replacing wires a direct replacement battery that I use following leaving my original connected for weeks by accident is here for less than £4.
  7. Yes, mistakes can be made and no doubt there are errors in some of the reports. However all the reports are scrutinised by the UK Airprox board (linked above) which is comprised of 14 experienced practitioners plus a number of expert advisors and undergo a rigorous causal analysis & risk assessment before the results are published. I'm inclined to take their output seriously.
  8. It is well documented that it is very difficult to pick out another aircraft - or drone - whilst flying, the UK Airprox Board has several documents outlining the physiology and techniques that can be applied to help mitigate the problem. We teach these from lesson 1 for full size. However once an object has been spotted the eye & brain are good at identifying it - as my earlier post illustrated & for example as JD8 observed above he could see the stick & clipboard in an opposite direction fast jet.
  9. The joy-rides are no longer operating but for many years an area of Southport Beach was a licensed airfield during the summer to permit the activity. After the Fox Moth a Cessna did the duty & the last I recall was a Bell 47 operating one summer. This used to return to Woodvale each evening to be extensively hosed down & lubricated. Full size are still allowed to land during the Southport Airshow weekend & there is usually a small selection of light aircraft & microlights on the ground during the display. Unfortunately not this year however due to the state of the surface. Southport MAC also do a model show for an hour or so before the full size display.
  10. For Southport contact Southport MAC who use the beach. Don't know about Blackpool but it would seem polite to contact Blackpool & Fylde RCMS
  11. Posted by Steve J on 17/12/2018 15:02:54: The problem is that the numbers of airproxes have shot up in the last few years (i.e. since easy to fly FPV/multirotor SUA because available.). Steve Indeed they have, here are the official stats published monthly by the CAA
  12. It varies dependant on the class of airspace, but in general for most civil air traffic there is an speed limit of 250knots indicated airspeed below Flight Level 100 (10,000ft)

Wonderfully nostalgic film from the days when we had hair, thank you Pete. Whilst I lived the other side of the country it is almost a mirror image of our activities - to the extent that I also had a Saturn Skydancer & flew the full size Colt (not to mention the Daf car lurking in the background at one point!)
  14. Posted by Steve Hargreaves - Moderator on 16/12/2018 14:25:20: A thought that occurs to me....as we all know air gets "thinner" as altitude increases. I wonder at what point it gets too thin to allow the drone to fly? I would guess at significantly greater altitude than 10,000 feet but it must surely start to become a factor at that height..... DJI do 'high altitude' propellors for their Inspire drone for flights above 2500 meters, which they say can be used to 5000 meters - about 16,000 ft.
  15. There is thread about the use of RC models in the BoB film here.
  16. As a full size flying instructor I find it pretty easy to distinguish a seagull from a magpie at 130 knots, I'm pretty sure I could tell a drone from a bin bag.
  17. They are probably referring to the 160WattHour limit for Lithium based batteries which is an ICAO limit. Not applicable to NiMh batteries. There is information on the CAA Website if you are interested.
  18. Is this some sort of new propulsion I've never seen before?
  19. I & friends have carried a Txs & other bits many times going to the RC Hotel in both hand & hold luggage without any problems.
  20. So glad I bought the RC Gloves when they were available, discussed in this thread where I did a review. 5 years on and much worn they are still as good as new, I was flying with them yesterday in comfort. For the feet I use Muck Boot Artic Sports, again expensive but again you get what you pay for, they are also like new after 3 years & effective in keeping the feet warm in sub zero temperatures.
  21. Depends what generation your Dx7 is but it's quite straightforward with the present software using 2 Mixs. In Function Mix>Mixing: Mix Ail>Rud 100% Left & Right this operates the rudder output with the Aileron stick then Mix Rud>Rud Rate -100% (Minus 100%) Left & Right. This disables the Rudder Stick output, but leaves the Rudder operating on the Aileron stick.   Edited By John Lee on 22/11/2018 14:52:18
  22. Posted by Paul james 8 on 22/11/2018 13:23:40: Although we get around the direction of servo travel by using separate channels these days it would still be useful to be able to buy "handed" servos for jobs like this. You must remember the days when we used to buy a reversed Futaba servo with a blue dot then! Perhaps you could just try applying some blue dots.........
  23. Glad it's worked Paul. If you want to reverse one of the flap servos you can't of course use a Y lead unless you reverse it mechanically. If you select Wing:2Ail 2Flap you will need at least a 7 channel Rx (Motor, Run, Ele, 2 Ail, 2 Flap =7) and the Left Flap will be assigned to the Gear Channel & the Right Flap to Aux 2. You can then reverse one of the flap servos in Function List>Servo Setup. An option for a 6 channel Rx is to use the Y lead on the ailerons & set the wing type to 1Ail 2 Flaps & then reassign the GEAR output to L Flap using the Rx Port Assignment screen. Just be careful in your Rx search, there are plenty of dodgy cloned Spektrum Rx's about, I'd suggest you only use authorised outlets. Some of the bigger ones (eg Al, Sussex, TJD, Inwood) sometimes have bagged Rx's from when they split a Tx/Rx combo in the shop which can be picked up at a good price. Could be worth ringing around, they often don't appear on-line.
  24. Another characteristic of Spektrum you may not be familiar with Paul is that the menu logic is such that options do not appear if they are not appropriate to that model type. e.g. you will not see the 'Flap System' menu if you have not told the Tx that the model has flaps in the Aircraft Type menu. You will not see the Crow Menu unless you have selected a 'Sailplane' Model Type etc. It may save much grief to set up each model with a fresh memory & work your way logically down the 'System Setup' menu before trying to set up anything in the Function menu.
