Had the first flights this morning. Low rates were a bit sedate, I kept thinking"turn, turn!" mid rates seem to work fine, flies nicely on half throttle which means I can get about 6 minutes out of a 1400 mAH 3s battery, might try a larger battery later but wanted to keep the weight low for first flights. Your recommendations regarding COG were spot on. Just one thing to sort out, I think it needs more downthrust, it just wants to climb when you open the throttle, will put a couple more washers on the bottom of the motor.

Or one of these Great Planes motor mount Extends to 117mm apparently
-
As the 100mm ones are out of stock currently, bear in mind that you can't cut these down as they are not hollow/threaded through the entire length (I made that mistake). How about something like this? Ply motor mount Not sure about the length but a quick call should sort that out. Alternatively buy some M3 threaded rod, some M3 nyloc nuts and some 3.5mm or 4mm i.d carbon fibre or aluminium tube. Cut 4 tubes to 100mm, slide tube over threaded rods and mount one end to firewall and the other to the cruciform motor mount or indirectly via a ply plate with the nyloc nuts Robert's your father's brother!

That might be a bit ambitious for a first model.

I have used Element Essentials superglue on foam and it seems to work well, available from Element Games, about £4 for a 20g bottle. I suppose it will also depend on the type of foam too. Available in thick, medium and thin grades.

Volantex Ranger 1600 under powered
Shaun Walsh replied to Brian Dorricott 1's topic in All Things Model Flying
Putting some numbers into eCalc indicates that the 8x6 3 blade would probably draw too much current for the motor/esc combination. Using a 4s battery would considerably increase thrust and draw just under 30 amps. A 1900kv motor would give the same unloaded rpm as as 1400kv motor on 4s battery. so Philip's Bixler motor is a reasonable suggestion provided the motor and esc will handle the current, otherwise a smaller prop would be needed. I have a Graupner Cumulus 2800 which flies on a Turnigy SK3 2836 1500kv motor with an 8x4 prop and performance is adequate, pretty much in line with what would have been expected with the original glow motor but by no means spectacular -
If you cant take a screen shot, can you list the files with the .exe suffix

When you put disk A into the drive, open windows explorer and navigate to the cd drive, post a screen shot of what's there if you can.

I have put the motor/prop details into eCalc and it gives a thrust/weight ratio of 2 which presumably gives pretty good vertical performance! Although it does indicate that at full throttle the motor is operating beyond its rated current capacity. The motor I have fitted is a Turnigy 2217-1050KV which eCalc says should give a max Thrust/Weight ratio of around 1.7 which should be enough for me.

That's great, thanks for the info, what motor have you used?

Thanks for the info, any recommendations for aileron throw and CoG position?

Update: Put the motor in and it has considerable right thrust and, apparently, some up thrust ?. Motor removed and washers added between the motor and the mount in appropriate places which was really fiddly, had to tack glue the washers in place on the motor then screw it in. First try looks better but I think it still needs more down thrust so it will have to come out again ?. The servo cutouts are an exact fit for Emax ES08MDII servos, nice and snug. The control horns are cheap brittle plastic so these were replaced with small SLEC ones, similarly the clevises. Still waiting for some odds and ends so it will be a few days before it is complete. The instructions I have found online make no mention of control throws so it will be a case of dialling in plenty of expo just in case.

LED wing tip lights - suggestions

Take a look at the Strobon range available from Flytron -
I realise this is an old thread but I just bought one of these from Banggood's UK warehouse. Arrived within 4 days and I am pleased with the quality. Cost £45 for the kit, foam is rigid and well moulded, it has a metal motor mount and ply battery support with velcro strap. Just need 4 servos, esc, motor/prop/spinner and receiver.

Electricity problems, SE5a: and advice please.
Shaun Walsh replied to Maurice Dyer's topic in General Electric Flight Chat
I put the numbers into ecalc and 5 mins is more or less what you should expect, if you want longer duration you need a bigger battery as in 4000 to 5000 mAh -
I range checked my AR600 vs the AR610 and AR620 antennaless receiver and found that the AR610 had a noticeably longer range than the other 2. However, all 3 achieved the 30 metre low power range recommended by Spektrum.

Modern diesels need to be run at moderately high speed on a regular basis to burn off the soot in the dpf otherwise it will need to actively regenerate by injecting fuel in the exhaust cycle to start what is basically a fire in the exhaust system. My wife has a diesel zafira and I keep telling her she's driving it too slowly in too high a gear but she won't listen so it does an active regeneration regularly which wont do it any good. If you keep turning the engine off while it's regenerating it gets to the point where you have to take it to a garage for a forced regeneration which won't be cheap. If that fails its a new dpf or a chemical clean of the old one ?

The WOT 4 Foam-e does seem to be quite lightly built and prone to damage. I have a Riot which is heavier/more robust in comparison. Its been through 2 trees and had 1 heavy arrival and it still flies well after appropriate repairs.

Replacing Sullivan Snakes
Shaun Walsh replied to Dale Bradly's topic in Model Engineering and Accessories
Carbon fibre has a very low coefficient of thermal expansion but if you replace the inner snake with CF tube it probably wouldn't be flexible enough to accommodate the bends in the outer tube without binding. -
What to buy to replace WOt4 FoamE motor and ESC?
Shaun Walsh replied to Andy C's topic in All Things Model Flying
Possibly something like this? motor esc
