  1. Many thanks for the info. The viceroy does sem to fit, although in the pictures I can find it appears to have a slightly different cowl shape and is a tail dragger. From what I can gather, it wasn't a particularly good or liked model, so I can't see any value in trying to resurect it. I think I will salvage the bits and save the wood for November 5th. Now what am I going to build for an Irvine 61, with tricycle undercart and ailerons to use as a trainer ? It's probably going to be quite big by todays trainer standards and NO, not a Super 60 ! I have no problems cutting foam wings, but cutting ribs is boring and I haven't built the CNC machine yet (Next winters project). Any suggestions gratefully appreciated. kevinb slightly less clueless, but not glueless.
  2. Now let me get this right. You can't fly solo because you haven't got an A cert. Ok. In order to take the A test you have to fly solo. Correct ? So do you have to take the test at another club ? I think the club should look carefully at its rules ! If the club "qualified" instructor thinks you are safe enough to fly solo, then surely in order to practice for the test you should be allowed the opportunity to do so. Isn't that in the best interests of the club anyway ? I thought the idea was to encourage newcomers to the hobby. It's hardly a good advert for that particular club, is it ? Also they will have taken membership fees off you, even though you haven't got an A cert. pm me with your location in Leeds. I am just joining my local club "up the road" from you and they seem to be more interested in flying (safely), as well as regularly rather than rules. kevinb
  3. I'm not sure this thread is in the right place, but if I'm wrong the mods will no doubt help sort it out. Ok. I was given a model trainer about 20 years ago (less the wing) complete with radio gear. It was over 10 years old then ! It went into the loft until I grew out of rock bands and chasing after women (I still can't catch them). Any way, having got the urge a couple of years ago I have returned to the fold. I was chatting at the local flying field and was discussing aircraft with one of the instructors when he apologised for the condition of his current hack as he had been given it. This reminded me and I dug out aformentioned trainer with a view to a little restoration work. Also it is a bit bigger than my Yamamoto and I though it might fly a bit slower and more stable. All it needs is some TLC and a new wing. That's when the problem started. Having looked around I can't identify it. It was definitely a kit build and it looks so similar to a lot of models of that era. I even took it back to the shop where it was bought from originally (at their request) and we all stood around scratching our heads. They even went to see if the had a spare wing which might fit. If anyone can help it would be much appreciated. The model is approx 1260mm, sorry 49.5ins long from spinner to tail and is fitted with an Irvine 61. The interesting thing is that the cover over the fuel tank is held on with rubber bands to gain acccess to fill the tank. it came from the local Army apprentices training camp and I was given it when the camp closed down. It seems that this was all they built and then ran it like a car around the parade ground ! The engine is still not run in and at the time had Brand new, state of the art Futaba Challenger R/C fitted. We seem to think it may have had a wingspan of over 1780mm, sorry 70ins and is a semi-eliptical section. Can anybody help please ? My excuse is I'm not old enough to remember (cough, cough). kevinb clueless dept

  6. Ok, it sounds like you already have paint on the model. You will have a great deal of difficulty using any masking material aplied to the paint. As has been said, the adhesion to foam is minimal. However don't despair. If you have a steady hand you can make some hard stencils out of clear plastic or even use plastic bottles to get curves. Then hold them carefully while you spray a bit at a time. Don't worry too much about overspray as you can then clearcoat the whole fuselage afterwards. The only downside being weight. I would suggest a contrasting trim line over the paint edges to finish it off. We resprayed a helicopter a while ago in a special custom material due to weight (a real one). We used 4 litres of paint plus laquer and hardener. The reason for telling you ? The paint alone cost £600.00 Per litre !!! kevinb Don't ask what I do for a living.
  7. Hi Just. Welcome to the forum and this great hobby of ours. My best advice is to find a club near to you and go say hello. It might be an idea to take your plane with you and see if it is suitable for you to use as a trainer. They will also advise you on all other aspects of being new to the hobby and what you need. The best place to start looking for a club in your area is here **LINK** kevinb
  8. Hi Erfolg. Just found a couple of nice plans for a 52ins span RSE and a 26 ins span YQC, which I could enlarge for you. Let me know if you are interested.
  9. Hi. I fancy having a go at the Muttley Machine. What sort of scale / span are you working at ?
  10. Many congrats Ollie and Emma. A big hello to Stephen from North Yorkshire. Life will probably never be the same again ! kevinb Welcoming committee

  12. Following my recent doom & gloom posting I was pleased to find this little bit of potential good news **LINK** WOW 10 times the capacity, or 1/10th the size with over 1000 charge cycles. We could be heading into the golden age of lekky flying (sorry Alex). kevinb public information dept
  13. Yup, me 2. Started off on bass & vocals and ended up playing rythm as well. After 40 years or so, got bored with it and have come back to model making. The one thing I have noticed. There aren't as many "groupies". There again these days I wouldn't know what to do with them anyway ! The good thing though, is that having a hobby which not only paid for itself, but also the few holidays I have taken, means that I don't have to worry about financing the models (particularly as I am probably going to go through a few before I get the hang of it). Although a lot of my gear is for sale, I am keeping a small rig - just in case. kevinb Good old boys anon. Edited By kevin b on 13/04/2013 20:30:35
  14. Oh, oh **LINK** The thin end of the wedge ? Mind you, isn't there something ironic about the head of Google worried about individuals gaining information using stealth technology ??? kevinb Cynicism and irony dept.
  15. If you really want to do it on the cheap electric car door mirrors usually have 2 motors in them and they are easy to get hold of, but some only have very short shafts. Also DVD / CD readers have a small motor in them to open the drawer and I know there are lots of those lying around scrap. You could also save the brushless drive motor for later. kevinb Yorkshire modelling for beginners.
  16. If the butter was produced abroad, it's entirely understandable. They obviously know what U.K. H&S is like. It can't have been produced over here as it is only written in english. I just saw this **LINK** could be very interesting.

  19. Hi Erfolg. I have plans for a Waco AGC 44ins span, Waco E 52ins and a Waco ENF 64ins. If any of them take your fancy pm me with your e-mail address and I will send them to you. kevinb
  20. Posted by Peter Miller on 05/04/2013 18:23:21: Sorry but the Polikarkpov just does not excite me to be polite. Ruprect. The retracts go backwards with the U/C legs outside the wing which will present you with problems. I gave up on that. One aircraft that I would like to do is the Aviat 110 Special. I suspect that the cut vinyl colour scheme would cost a fortune and there is only one colour scheme. I will NOT accept a non scale colour scheme. How about this one then Peter ? **LINK**
  21. Hi Olly. If the floor is supended at all it really should have 100mm insulation under it. It may work out cheaper to put netting underneath and use loft insulation between the joists. 100mm kingspan is expensive, but it works. Ask me how I know ! Having sorted out what I need to complete my workshops and garage I now have a problem of what to do with all the gardening and building equipment. Hmm I wonder............. kevinb shed pondering
