  1. It's a consequence of the GDPR regulations - if a member asks to have their details and content wiped from the site, we have no choice. It's happened on very few occasions, fortunately, as the results when threads are disrupted are plain to see - or not see, as it were..... We're also constantly plagued with spammers, normally easily identified and we can deal with them there and then , but occasionally they'll get a post through. Once we identify them, their details are wiped and it may leave a 'Former member' post. Pete
  2. Posted by Peter Miller on 01/05/2020 13:32:25: While a Shackleton doing ground runs makes every part of the body tremble. It can do a bit more than that, Peter! Pete
  3. It's been quite a while since I used ammonia to induce a curve in wood and it certainly worked but my memory's a bit hazy about. I can't remember the dilutions but having soaked the hard sheet that had been supplied in a kit overnight, it had softened considerably to the extent that it was easy to wrap over the ribs from the spar to the leading edge, pin in place and leave to dry. If you can get some ammonia, treat it with a lot of respect - it can certainly clean your tubes! Put the wood in a long poly bag, pour in the diluted ammonia, seal the bag and lay it in a long tray/container of some description, placing a heavy weight on the wood. Leave it outside - anywhere indoors and the fumes will penetrate the entire house - for a day, then remove the wood from the bag. It should have softened considerably. Weighting it again, leave it to air dry naturally. Here in France, 13% ammonia is available in all DIY shops and many supermarkets in litre bottles, so it wasn't a problem for me. I can't guarantee it will work, so it may just be easier to order some suitably graded sheet from SLEC or similar, perhaps?
  4. Hi Limobob, Like you, I live in France and, as a subscriber, you should have received the following email in mid-April which explains the situation: Dear Peter I hope that you and your family are safe and coping with the effects of Covid-19. Due to the increase in border controls and delays for commercial transportation at national boundaries, we are not able currently to guarantee that you will receive your magazine copy. We cannot guarantee delivery as we rely upon the complex international distribution networks which are each suffering their own challenges at this time, and we do expect delays and disruption for the next few months. We have therefore decided that it would be fairer for you to not mail at this time so that you don’t lose out on any issues you have paid for. For this period, in order that you don’t miss any content from the magazine, we are extending to you free access for the foreseeable future to the digital archive of our magazines, where each issue will be placed once published. We will continue this until we can be confident that our supply chain has returned to normal. To activate your archive access (should you do not already have access) please visit https://www.modelflying.co.uk/archive and follow the steps. Please note you will not be charged for any missed copies from your print subscription and you will receive everything you have paid for. Wishing you the very best through these difficult times. Warm regards, Kate Kate Hall Subscriptions Manager
  5. Just a gentle reminder to play nicely and respect each other, folks. The only spats we like to see here are on undercarriages..... I thank you.... Pete
  6. Posted by Barrie Lever on 22/04/2020 19:35:28: What do you call 100% western manufactured? There are content formulas for local content, just interested in what your views on 100% are? B. I'm just looking at it from a simplistic, if extreme, point of view, Barrie. Dismantle, say, a Western-badged car, plant machinery, refrigerator, garden mower - anything with a significant number of components - and, at some point in the process, it is highly likely that an Eastern-sourced component will be found, even if it's only components on a PCB. I don't think it's possible for anyone to now exercise their prejudice against Far East manufacture to the nth degree and be successful, if that's the word, in achieving their aim. I understand the local content formula principle - without it I'm sure there would be a dearth of products to buy! Like it or not, the world is reliant on trade co-operation to function. Governments just need to get the balance right - and I don't ever see that happening with the cost of labour being so varied across the world. I do remember, back in the 70s, my wife's uncle becoming apoplectic when he found we had bought a Datsun Cherry. He had been a FE POW. It took a long time for him to forgive us. Pete
  7. Yes, we are watching, folks, as ever.... Whilst there is undoubtedly a political element, the reality is that it's more about the economic and industrial realitiies of the world in which we now live and that's not going to unroll any time soon. Many components of everyday items, sold under the names of long-established Western companies, are now manufactured in the Far East and it would be impossible, IMHO, to pick and choose what your conscience allows you to buy with any confidence that you're buying a 100% Western-manufactured product. You all have my confidence that the chat will continue without us needing to intervene..... Pete
  8. I believe the editable time is between 30 and 60 minutes. Yes, the system is very much steam-powered but it works and we're likely to be stuck with it for some time. An upgrade was looked at a while back but the problems of re-formatting and maintaining the archived material were insurmountable, I understand. We mods are always happy to carry out a necessary edit on your behalf once you've lost the opportunity. Best way is to 'Report' the post (red flag button under post). The next mod who picks it up will respond. You can also PM an individual mod but there may be more of a delay if the message is not picked up by him for whatever reason. Pete

  10. Try and keep this a family-suitable forum, please, folks - I've just deleted a post I thoroughly agree with but perhaps not for here,eh? Thanks, Pete
  11. I swear my bog-standard Radjet flies just as fast as that - might just be me, though...... Pete
  12. Posted by john stones 1 on 03/04/2020 17:25:57: Six Nations, yep shame about that.
  13. A certain other subject which seems to have been preoccupying us for a while seems to have fallen out of the news altogether.... Pete
  14. Right now, I am smiling at the reporting of the 'severe measures' imposed last night with the closure of clubs, pubs and bars etc. That is just the start of it if the controls currently imposed here in France are anything to go by. Briefly, I can only leave my house for a few specific reasons, such as food shopping, go to essential work or visit a doctor. I can only leave the garden for some exercise such as a brief walk close in proximity to the house. No cycling, no angling, no walks in the woods. No visiting friends or family for a meal etc. If the measures here are adopted in the UK, as they surely must soon if lockdown is to have any effect, then any preparations being made at club fields etc for continuing leisure activities are optimistic in the extreme. Stay safe, folks. Pete
  15. Posted by john stones 1 on 18/03/2020 17:44:51: Glad to hear you're all well. Dropped a clanger the other day, looking for a shop entrance and missed it, ended up driving in a bus lane. Today I get a fixed penalty fine. Cheers my dear, hope they run outa loo roll. Glad you're doing your bit to assuage the forthcoming National Debt rise, John! Pete
  16. Keep it light, folks - we've a long way to go before we can justify being tetchy.... Pete
  17. Gents, apologies for something beyond my control. I edited the title as requested after looking at the thread which definitely contained a number of posts. I saved the one-letter change and all except Steve J's post had disappeared into the ether when the page re-loaded.... It wasn't finger trouble, honest! Please feel free to post the thread opener again, leccy Pete
  18. Posted by McG 6969 on 13/03/2020 19:24:17: There is Pete who always pretend his (costly) visits to Barcelona or Paul Ricard don't bring him a clue forward. Cheers Chris Too busy driving or flashing up the barby to do any worthwhile research, Chris, I assure you I was so pleased to be able to get the F1TV 'all races live' subscription at a sensible price here in France this year too...... Now I think I'm looking forward to a refund on my Spanish ticket with the way things are going - and possibly Austria too... Pete
  19. Autosport announcing cancellation of Australian GP, subject to statement by FIA and F1. Just announced on Sky News, too. Anyone for online dominos, snap, snakes and ladders - or can we have a Fantasy Fantasy F1? Pete
  20. Every cloud has a silver lining..... Look at it this way. All those panic-buying stocks of loo roll and pasta clearly intend to spend weeks and weeks at home, not emerging into public at all. That's got to be a good thing for the rest of us, surely? Pete
  21. Posted by McG 6969 on 01/03/2020 10:53:08: As we were 15 in 2019, we are short of 2 'oldies'... With all this 'flu about, losing only 2 'oldies' over the winter isn't bad going...... Pete
  22. You'll all be pleased to know I didn't learn anything from my days at Testing that will help this season... Not sure about the Alpha Tauri paint scheme - reminds me of the WW1 dazzle-pattern camouflage! I haven't picked a team yet - and your comments above are filling me with gloom. It was hard enough last year... Pete
  23. Posted by trebor on 23/02/2020 17:26:01: Pete, of course it was "tongue in cheek" dont forget to delete your post with my quote in case they report you I'd like to say I'm out of reach over here in sunny France - although my CAA ID arrived yesterday You think you've got it difficult in the UK - here I have a different registration number for each model and the IFF bit is approaching (allegedly!)
