Antony Wright
theres a thought - how about RCM&E organising some workshops to teach us newbees how to build a plane from a plan?Yes I know its impractical - but wouldnt that be fun? Gathering a few folk together in one place and showing us how to transfer the components from the plan to the wood and how to cut them out accurately? Maybe it could become a magazine article? Who knows you may even enjoy teaching us.
Graham Ashby 123
Anthony, courtesy of Al' Whittaker we've just started a series in the magazine with the intention of doing just that. Grab the March issue when it appears and you'll be able to follow it right from the start. Alex will be building a simple sportster that he's designed with the beginner in mind. The plan will be given away within the next issue or three (probably May).As for the RCM&E workshop idea? Not a bad one. It'd certainly be fun but I really can't see it happening just yet. We're all a little busy at the moment with other projects… Oh, and the mag’ of course!
bushwhackerbob
I have an old version of the RCME plans book (90's??) in my loft which had a detailed article on building from plans and creating your own kits. Perhaps RCME could provide a photocopy or even update the original as an article?
Antony Wright
That would be useful. Maybe they could add it on here for us :)
Bryan Ward
I am new to this game of model flying and recieve your mag. RCM&E which has some excellent articles but most of your writers assume that we know a lot so pehaps you could give us a list of the many abreviations on this website
Danny Fenton
It must be very difficult for magazines to reach its audience, on the one hand there are balsa bashers with decades of experience, and on the other there is a constant flow of newcomers all wanting the same basic set of answers. I congratulate the magazines because in general they do manage a happy medium. How about a supplement updated and published yearly, like a 13th magazine that contains all the favorite topics, that newbies, or those of us returning could pick up for a heads up? winchweight
Les, there's a good one at Montford Bridge I think. They are active most fridays and weekends. Also Sleap, although thats a bit further. There's also one at Wrexham. Try local hobby shop for details as they will usually know.
David Ashby - Moderator
Danny, we will be making this years 'special issue' (like last years special) a factual edition full of tutorials rather than columns etc.
Danny Fenton
Thats good news David, how about making it available all year, so as newcommers join us they can be pointed at the reference? Don't tell me you already thought of that LOL
David Ashby - Moderator
Last years special is still in stock (you won't be suprised to hear me say!) but, yes we could advertise it.
Antony Wright
I can see that being a big seller as we seem to have a lot of us who are either coming back to the hobby or new to it. Sounds great and just what we need.

Graham Ashby 123
If you'd like one or two alternatives Les, give the BMFA a buzz (0116 244 0028) and they'll let you have contact details for the affiliated clubs in your area. There's bound to be a few around.

Dave Caple
Hi Les, I live the other side of the Clee to you in Cleobury Mortimer and I fly with the Wyre Forest club (electric & gliders). I know Martins Models in Leominster run a club or if you are still struggling go to www.bmfa.org.uk and click on clubs

Andy Green
The Special was an excellent edition, but I was a bit miffed, having paid £5 for it to see it being given away with a full size flying mag costing £4 the following month.A
Antony Wright
Yup I have to agree with Andy. I felt cheated somehow. Not only was the special free but the mag it was with was cheaper - by todays standards that was 2 for less than the price of 1 :)
David Ashby - Moderator
Good point, thanks chaps. I hadn't really realised this, will make sure the marketing folks know about this for next time. David.
Hagar69
I have been reading Alex Whittakers series with great interest, I find them very good & full of useful tips. I do have one problem though, he keeps refering to SLEC tools & jigs. I have searched several online shops & can't find any reference to them. Can anyone help??
Danny Fenton
Here is the SLEC balsa stripper, I think there has been a bit of a problem with the fuselage jig, nobody makes the quality one referred to in Alex's articles any longer, shame because I wanted one of those.http://www.jperkinsdistribution.co.uk/detail.php?JPNO=5509365&activepage=2&Navmain=Accessories&subcatname=SLECIf you find a good fus jig let us all know, including Alex LOL
Andy Green
You usually see SLEC at the shows, they're the tent with all the loose fittings and they furnish you with a shopping basket on your way in.Great opportunity to stock up on bits and bobs / come in handy stock.Great range of balsa too, if anyone remembers the stuff. As to balsa strippers, I had a SLEC one for years and it was very good, but quite large, you have to stick the channel to a piece of wood. I use one of these now and it is just as every bit as good as the SLEC one, and fits in my tool box.http://www.sussex-model-centre.co.uk/shopexd.asp?id=2108Andy
