Chris Channon
Hi all, just wondered why some people use dope on top of solartex ? Is it just to fill the weave of the covering or does it help to shrink it ? Thanks in advance Chris.
Alan Cantwell
keeps the shrink, and stops the staining
Myron Beaumont
Hi Chris I presume its to stop it getting dirty .I can't think that it would shrink it anymore than heat does.
flytilbroke
It does indeed tighten the fabric a bit more than heat-shrinking.

Snorbitz
I've just finished covering a wing in solartex and non shrinking dope. Reason was simply to fill the weave ready for painting. It took 3 good coats of 50/50 mix dope/thinners to do it but the finish is like glass after rubbing down. Lots of hard work and a week to do but worrth it i'd say. Martin Harris - Moderator
If you don't want the textured effect, you can always use Glosstex which duplicates a full size painted fabric pretty well....
Barrie Dav 2
I've found it difficult to get (homemade) transfers to adhere properly to uncoated Solatex. Also there is some paint creep under masking tape with the weave. I use Clearcoat to overcome these problems, the use of which is a pity when building vintage models as it reduces the vintage effect. If a model is large enough to carry the extra weight, Solartex or Glosstex adds a great deal of strength to the structure.
Ultymate
Glosstex is a painted fabric and if you touch it with your iron you will mark the painted surface.Used it once on a Goldberg Ultimate, it's also quite heavy and expensive.
Barrie Dav 2
You can always use a sock on the iron though. Glosstex is designed to be used with an iron so maybe you had a duff roll.
Ultymate
Yes I know you can use a sock in fact it's virtually mandatory I was just pointing out that the surface will burn, personally I wouldn't use it again just for the weight and cost issues Profilm under it's many different trade names gives a far better gloss finish is less weighty and more durable.
