Devon Flyer
Very nice video; are you sure that's 2000ft - how did you measure it?
Stuart Eggerton
Yeah you need a keen eye or two Ken! Hi Devon flyer, I checked the cloud base on XC weather and it was about 2000ft at that time on the day, Also we get used to how big the model is and how high it is and have calibrated how big the model looks at 2000ft with a digital altimeter. To do this I again the altimeter attached to the model and video'd it, please see video below. The Gentle Lady was at 2000ft here, maybe you are right as it does look higher in the video below. It's hard to judge altitude from the ground but the plane seemed to be a similar size that that in the video below when seen from the ground. The altimeter was set to relative altitude so effectively the model was 2000ft QFE not QNH in the video below, The terrain is fairly flat. fly boy3
Very nice video Stuart, did you use electric assist to get it up so high. LoL. FB3

Stuart Eggerton
Thanks people for all the nice comments . Firstly I did use electric assist to get the model up to altitude, there were themals around but they were not very strong at that time of day. I used an Aiptek camera, link here Edited By Stuart Eggerton on 16/08/2011 21:03:

If it was the cryogenics department, Ken, I don't think you'd get more than an icy stare............ Really nice vids, Stuart - it's not easy to fly smoothly at that sort of altitude Pete Edited By Pete B on 16/08/2011 21:15:
PatMc
Pete, it is dead cold up here but Ken's exaggerating. (As usual)

Stuart Eggerton
Hi everyone, on Saturday morning (early), I took my Gentle Lady glider up to 2,550ft AGL!! It was hard to track the model as it's 2 meters wingspan at that height looks really small. Managed it though and hopefully below is a video showing the epic flight
fly boy3
Hi Stuart, great video, can i ask what power train you used ?, and is there such a thing as an "electric GL" or did you have to modify the model. Cheers FB3
Steve Hargreaves - Moderator
Very impressive......Stuart....I'd guessed at 2,000 ft from the opening video but decided I must be wrong because you'd hardly see the thing at that height..... I would guess if you took your eye off it for a second the model would disappear....
Stuart Eggerton
I don't actually know the power train used as my friend Tom Wright (Tom Wright2) electified the glider for me. The motor has been going for ages! I originally bought the GL as a glider and then the only modification really was to detach the nose block and put a ply former there in order to mount the motor. The battery pack fits comfortably into the fuz. Also with flying the model at great height it is surprising how fast you can be going when at height, although the model does not seem to be moving very fast it can be! especially if penetrating into a headwind, so care must be taken not to overspeed the model. fly boy3
Hi Stuart, thanks for the info. This electric thing has really transformed all parts of our hobby, and for the good.I also speak to Tom on the net, and he has given me invaluable information regarding electrics, and his budget PL models. Cheers.
Stuart Eggerton
I have purchased a Go Pro Hero 2 video camera, not cheap but very good! strapped it to my trusted Gentle Lady electric glider airframe and flew the model above the clouds, I am very pleased with the results Edited By Stuart Eggerton on 01/06/2012 23:24:
