Yes, good picture!

Have lived where I am in Hayes, close to Bromley, Kent since 1979, this house since 1981. Until last spring the only finch type to visit despite trying to attract birds were Greenfinches, from maybe mid 80's to late 80's, at that time in numbers on feeders, then almost overnight nothing other than a rare sighting.

During 2010 they started coming back, sometimes 8 or 9 at once, but that ended in the early autumn of 2011. Now only at mots two or three, and that inconstant.

During Winter 2011/2 we suddenly got Redpolls visiting in numbers on the Niger feeders, had to look them up to know, never seen any before at all! They left in early Spring 2012 and have not so far returned.

From late Spring 2012 we have had increasingly large numbers of Goldfinches on the Sunflower heart feeders, a specis never seen before here at all though around in small numbers in the locality. Can get to 15 or thereabouts at once on four feeders, more waiting in the trees. A couple of months into this Chaffinches started turning up, to feed on the ground under the feeders, they do not attempt to use them.

This in a garden where until this population explosion of finches green parakeets are/were the most numerous bird to be seen, with pigeons learning to adopt the policy of following underneath them to feed on the food they drop. The finches are not at all fazed by the parakeets and while they fight amongst themselves for rights to the feeders, they seem so surprised the Goldfinches ignore their size and loud calls that they leave them alone.

I expected the Finch presence, at least in such numbers, to cease as winter came, it hasn't. Now we too are getting Siskins in small numbers mixed up with them, and also on the feeders. (Another specis not previously known here).

Looks to me like the Finches had an exceptionally good year, probably trading on the absence of the sparrows.

On a different note:-

On Sunday 17th February was a big day for us all at Woodford, the new owners have been planning to move XM603 from where we move her a couple of month ago to her final resting place across the other side of the airfield next to the fire station, now before we get the safety police, it was all done above board, she had sat there all these months why she was checked for stress and the like to the undercarriage and wheels, but she was in good shape so it was decided to move her for the last time, and we were tasked with the job, to say we were ecstatic was an understatement. Here is a couple of pictures I took of the big event.

and she is off

full steam ahead

and there she goes

a cab with a veiw

and we are there

back a bit more

hold it, that will do

Safe and sound
