reg shaw
Thanks for that John, I'll learn one day!!! Cheers for the kind words folks, much appreciated Weight of my Flea at this stage is 18kg, so I have a 2kg margin for paint and details. Shouldn't be too much of a problem but we'll see, light paint me thinks! Ian.

Bob Cotsford
Nice one Ian, especially for coming up with a 1/2 scale model that doesn't broach the magic 20Kg!
David Davis
Well done. Nice video. Great landing.
reg shaw
Cheers David, I hope they'll all be as good as that one!!! Well, me gots me some silvery bits Silver dope sprayed on, a reet grand colour. Back wing and rudder done, two very light coats each. Hopefully get the front wing cleaned up and sprayed tomorrow night. Also, I've been playing with the perspective correction tool on Paintshop Pro to give me a decent shape for the Bertie on the rudder, I'll draw round it on my puter then blow it up to the size of my rudder, should help a fair bit!! Ian.
Colin Leighfield
This is such a fantastic piece of work Reg and a genuinely very interesting subject. It's already making me wonder what your next one's going to be. I've always been interested in the Wicko F, which originally flew with a converted Ford V8. There's an absolute shed-load of intriguing subjects from that era.
reg shaw
Thanks very much Colin, its a model I have thoroughly enjoyed building as it has been a virtual obsession since I saw first the Flea, then this fabulous colour scheme. William Heath Robinson is a great inspiration to me generally, but when this colour scheme was found that he almost certainly painted, it simply had to be done and now were getting to the colour scheme moment the real fun can begin!! reg shaw
Cheers Lynn, I hope I don't knacker it up at the last hurdle!! Now got me a silver main wing, but the weather has knackered any chance of getting the last coat on soon " class="smiley" src="http://www.rcmf.co.uk/4um/Smileys/live/angry.gif" title="Angry" /> Started drawing up Bertie for the rudder. Using the perspective correction tool on Paintshop Pro, I got a pretty decent outline for Bertie, simply taking a known dimension, the rudder spar, then taking a known right angle off it, a rib, the image is distorted so that these angles are right and the height and width is right. Then blow up till the dimensions match the height and width of my rudder, print out and voila!! Once blown up the image is redrawn by hand and then carbon traced onto the rudder itself. Ian. Stephen Jones
Hi Reg , You are a fine artist as well as you are a builder . It may be me but, the head looks a little small to me on the lower picture . just my observation is all, it could be that tape throwing me off . Steve . reg shaw
Steve, you are right, the head looks small on the paper template as it is curving down the leading edge of the wing it is laid on. I've been looking at the colours required and am aiming to do the artwork in acrylics or similar. I'm not bothered in the slightest about brush marks or paint thickness on the Bassetts stuff as it was apparently a bit of a laughing stock due to the thickness of the painting, folks commenting how a lowly powered aeroplane could have so much paint used in the decoration!! Normally on models, I'd use masks from Flightline Graphics but using masks on this model at 1/2 scale would simply look too neat without a lot of work on the masks to de neaten them, so hand drawn and painted is the route for this one. Even the registration has a distinctly hand drawn look to it. The central bars on the G-AEFK are all slightly up and down from one another. The lettering will be painted in cellulose and will be a bit neater than the Bassetts artwork as it is highly probable that it was painted before the aeroplane flew and by a different person. Ian. Fatscoleymo
Ian, I've just read all of this thread and am gob smacked by the attention to detail, standard and diversity of your work on Bertie. Truly amazing. (You posted some complimentary remarks about my Fournier - I am not worthy!). Long may you continue to delight us with your outstanding work. It looked lovely flying - and a greaser of a landing! Steve

reg shaw
Started drawing up the fuselage artwork, made easier whilst there is nothing in the fuselage to get in the way of my template. Using the pictures I have of the full size, I drew lines on them for points of register then drew the same lines on the template. Then measuring say the height of the fuselage at a known point, measure the height of the letters at that point also. This can then be transferred to the known height of my fuselage at the same point. Using this method at as many point as possible you can get some decent points with which to start filling in the shapes. Looking at the fuselage lettering, it's easy to see that it was all drawn up without too much care to follow exact dimensions for a type face since the 'dash' between the G and A s shorter than usual and the horizontals of the E are all differing lengths. Once the lettering is located, the sweets can be filled in the background using the crossing points where they go behind the letters. I found it helpful to compare the shapes left not painted, ie left silver, as a good marker. Here's a pic of the template in place, with the register lines running over it. Ian. Stephen Jones
Well i can see someone paid attention at art class , un like me i could not even draw a straight line let alone those sweet shapes . Looks a little flat at the moment can`t wait until you slap some paint on it and make it spring into shape . Loverly . Steve ,
