Colin Leighfield
John, you are a far more competent flyer than I am and you speak from your experience. I'm just making the assumption that the aerodynamics of the airframe will determine the way it stalls, the weight determines the speed it happens at. Either way, the faster it's going the worse the consequences are going to be, I guess. With this design I'm never going to question the competence of Dennis Bryant, if he decided it didn't need wash-out then he's right. I was interested to find that the very similar Airsail version does have wash-out and it looks as if the full-size does as well. I'm doing a bit of experimenting with my build anyway, so I might build it in and if it flies ok, we've all got a chance then to compare notes and see if there are any differences. I've got it in my head that progressive wash-out might make a wing more efficient, but I'm very likely wrong.
john stones 1 - Moderator
I don't disagree at all Colin, I expected to see it built in myself on a scale drawing, but I mostly fly sports models so am in new territory. john stones 1 - Moderator
Did the pin it to a window trick, to get other wing panel and started checking my ribs all fit. Been a bit of chat about the plans accuracy...flaps etc I don't care myself, I joined to learn how to do all the little bits that make a model stand out. Any help I get in doing this will much appreciated John Edited By john stones 1 on 30/10/2014 17:58:
Terry Walters
I'll send you mine to do John - can you have it back for Monday please ! Very nice - I'm thinking of using a glass topped coffee table and stick a lamp underneath. All our windows are 'french' style - small panes!! john stones 1 - Moderator
Glued all the ribs in apart from R1, will add rear spar and t/e so I can fit the wedges before fitting final rib. Flap and ailerons tomorrow, not looking forward to the hinges John
john stones 1 - Moderator
No flapping today been working, got a bit done on my left panel though. I should start moving a bit quicker when this has dried. I bought some cyano from screwfix...it sticks anything brilliant stuff Used it once can't get the top off John
john stones 1 - Moderator
2 panels made u/c bearers next while I build waggly things John
Colin Leighfield
Getting there quick!
john stones 1 - Moderator
It's slow going on the wings Colin, waiting for glue to dry One thing I can say is only one panel has shear webs so far and they both feel solid John
Colin Leighfield
Thanks John, noted.
john stones 1 - Moderator
Started the centre section, built with 2 x 1/8 R1's and a 1/4 centre rib, spruce spars in ribs for the braces to glue to. I've been pondering the dowel and wing bolt method.... I don't like the build where the w/bolt fits through the wing between B3-B4 . I want to use 1 dowel at l/e and 2 w/bolts at rear so I shall fill it with soft block. John
john stones 1 - Moderator
Whist I was pondering I did a bit of sanding with a permagrit I borrowed....much nicer tool to work with John

john stones 1 - Moderator
Keep doing bits but don't seem to be getting anywhere strip on t/e for capstrips to butt against, u/c blocks cut and centre section ready to glue to one panel Bend wire tomorrow but I need a new blowlamp first. Looking forward to sheeting it John
Charles Galloway
Looking good. I should have built mine in three parts, much more sensible.
john stones 1 - Moderator
Thanks Charles If it's as neat as yours i'll be happy. John
Terry Walters
John - I tnink you have have convinced me to build in three sections. That's how my DB Turbulent was built. The problem I had with that was trying to get the dihedral brace in through the ribs in the wing panels after building. Broke no end of ribs doing so. Trial fitting of the cut parts suggests that won't be a problem with this build. Terry
Colin Leighfield
I'm convinced on the three sections approach as well, so I'll copy that.
john stones 1 - Moderator
I cut my own parts lads so I was not confident of getting it spot on, this way I feel more secure. You both have laser cut parts so I reckon you'll be o.k however you go. Once you get going with it I think you'll enjoy it John
A.A. Barry
John, the ribs are a bit tedious, cutting 36 of em, but as ya say,... just keep at it, I had mine cut but I think they could have been in a harder balsa...very prone to splitting when sanding the L/E Barry
john stones 1 - Moderator
Hi Barry Yes the ribs are a bore, I used some firmish balsa for them. The Nieuport 17 I built had 116 ribs in it John
john stones 1 - Moderator
No work done on it today..but nearly got a wing John
