BlackWire

Never had a black wire problem with lipos for the last 6 years I've been using them, but had black wire on a couple of nicads and nimhs many years ago. I now cycle and fully recharge my nimhs if I am not using them for a while and not had a problem since. Also if I'm not using lipos for some time especially over winter, I put them into 'storage charge' . Don't know if this helps prevents black wire, but had no problems so far.

Corrosion in the wires - usually the black one - is generally caused by over-charging, and the resulting venting of gas from the positive end of the cell (where the vent is placed). The gas is corrosive, and has a positive charge and will be attracted to the negative end of the battery, where it will attack the wire.

It is possible for enough to gather around the positive end to attack the wire, but this is rarer.

It was a problem prevalent in the 60s and 70s, when a weekend's flying probably only used about 20-30% of the batteries capacity, and they were then given a full overnight trickle charge before the next week-end - often in a damp shed or garage that exacerbated the problem.

The introduction of peak-detect chargers has seen a rapid decline in cases of wire corrosion, though an *occasional* trickle charge is still a good idea to balance NiXX cells.

I've not seen the problem with LiPos, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist!

Could be right there Pete. My black wire problem was back in the old days when we used to leave them to charge overnight with the supplied charger which gave no indication of the state of the batteries. Since I now charge everything with 'peak-detect' chargers, and we can see what's happening on the screen read out during charging, I've never had problem.
