Tom Major
... but there is much more to it. If you have an hour, enjoy this documentary. I saw it last night and as a pilot under training I fully admire what he did. Enjoy.
Cliff 1959
That took a lot of bottle, interesting end result as well. When I was P1 flying with my other half we use to practice approaches on an abandoned strip... Just in case!!

PatMc
Max Coote, the founder of Ripmax, collapsed at the controls of his light plane in 1981(?) his passenger who only had some informal "hands on" training was talked down by the control tower to a successful landing. onetenor
A terrific job and even the more so in the dark and no instrument lights. His little "hands on practice " at least meant he could keep straight and level and find the throttles but some achievement anyway. Tom Major
I just spoke with one CFI from US of A and asked what in his view are chances of average pax to land a plane, he said 'not a chance'. I thought it was worth sharing as the guy is simply a hero, many would just melt down and give up.
Geoff S
I've sailed yachts at sea in the pitch dark and it's very easy to veer off course if you don't keep an eye on the compass (and the sails, of course) and that's just in 2 dimensions. How he, as a total beginner with almost no experience to speak of, managed to fly blind without being able to see the instruments is amazing. I suppose because we knew he eventually succeed in landing it took away some of the tension but it was still gripping. Certainly the professionals involved at the time were expecting a very bad ending. They must have been hugely relieved and delighted with outcome though somewhat tempered by the sad death of the pilot. Geoff

Jez Saunders
Just watched this, thanks for posting. Difficult circumstances at the best of times , eg. calm weather and full visablity. In darkness I don't know how he kept orentation and nerve. Exceptional individual John Wildey and a great sense of humour. Well done to him and those who got him down.
