stu knowles Posted June 26, 2019 Share Posted June 26, 2019 Hi All, I know that this is a long shot but does anyone have a 1/4 scale fibreglass Piper Cub cowl going spare?? I have come by an airframe from a modeller who now flies in higher skies but it came without cowl and struts. The engine is an ASP 160 flat twin which rather rules out a wrapped plywood cowl. I've had a good look on the t'internet but can't find anything and no-one seems to be making aftermarket glass parts in the way that there used to be. A used cowl that has been cut is no problem as I can repair and make up existing holes before fitting it to this engine. stu knowles Posted June 26, 2019 Author Share Posted June 26, 2019 I'll try ringing Mike Smart but the J3 cowl is shown out of stock on his web site and I had a feeling that he was running the business down now. There was a thread on this forum some time ago about Carbon Copy being unresponsive but I'll have to look back and see what the outcome was. Thanks for the suggestions. Piers Bowlan Posted June 27, 2019 Share Posted June 27, 2019 World Models do a quarter scale Piper Cub (clipped wing) and Stave Webb is the UK distributer, although I doubt he has any spares so it may be best to email World Models directly. Radar Hobbies in Hong Kong are the retail outlet for World Models in Hong Kong and they keep some spares in stock but they can get parts from the World Models factory in Shenzen. Could be worth a quick email to them at [email protected]. You could also WhatsApp them as they speak good English and I have always found them helpful. Incidentally, they do three colour schemes, Yellow, Red/white, and blue/white. Why does an ASP160 rule out a cowl fabricated from wood, it is a fairly simple shape? Personally I would make a plug from foam to mould an epoxy/glass cowl. Time consuming if quite satisfying to do and not too irksome as you got the rest of the airframe ready built. Making one from balsa wouldn't be hard but Glass is the better solution. I have made cowls from a blue foam plug but I thought that a Cub cowl might be an easy find off the shelf..... that seems to be no longer the case.
