Phil Cooke
Mine are splayed out quite a bit more than that - I measure 42mm across the flat top right at the back over the exhaust, and 70mm wide between the front most tips of the tailplane cheeks. Andrew Edmead
To be honest the way I read the plan was that the rear end of the cheeks where close to the fin. Leaving a bigger gap at the front. In the end I used my judgment and went for what just looked right. Got to make the exhaust tomorrow. Andrew Edmead
Ive found the backend very difficult especially with the absence of some permagrit files. I ended up with all my planking flush with f10. So I had to make a complete exhaust. I simply glued together some hard balsa block and stuck it to f10.. Then I shaped it to a rough profile, again most people are all doing it slightly different. so after looking at pictures and various blogs I finally got somewhere close. As for the the inner round hole, being an electrician I attacked it with my 51mm metal hole saw. It nearly ended in tears so I don’t condone this method but it worked for me. Andrew Edmead
I’ve done some sanding and filling today, I’m reasonably happy with it. The elevator was sealed and sander then given a layer off glass cloth. seemed to go on really well. I’m on with the cockpit and canopy now. Andrew Edmead
I’m nearly finished glassing, my first time. Have to say it’s gone really well. All done with the deluxe materials stuff. I think it probably takes 2.5m of glass. Andy
Phil Cooke
great stuff Andy, glad the first time glassing has gone well!
Andrew Edmead
I primed the fuz today. It’s obvious by the time I did the planking on the second side I was getting the hang of it. A bit more sanding to do I think. I would like to get some red paint from Halfords but I can’t decide on which red. Ive Googled the fire balls scheme but I can’t find a paint code. Any ideas? Andrew Edmead
I've been busy sanding and painting, I wasn't happy with the the finish I was getting. It's now been sanded within an inch of it's life and is super smooth, however such attention to detail is showing up more imperfections but I will have to live with them. I have been looking at the canopy, and I fixed it on loosely. If you look at my model further up this blog the canopy to me looks too far back? Going back to the drawing, the canopy looks a bit different, I've looked at all the blogs and looks to me that there are some differences in position. I just cant work out the right position. Looking at some pics of the real thing it looks like the canopy should be a lot further forward than on some of the blogs. Any thought on this I really want to get it right. dirk tinck
Hi Andrew , my canope mesures 60mm in front of former F3(without canope fairing , just the plastic ) , and 200mm after F3. The sliding part starts at F3 , if you want to paint-on a frame. Hope this helps , Dirk .
Andrew Edmead
Thanks Dirk, that’s a great help. can I ask the measurement from f3 to the beginning of the front fairing please. thanks Andy
dirk tinck
In my case that 's 96mm Andrew.
Andrew Edmead
Thanks Dirk. I’ve moved my canopy forward nearly 30mm. I’ve had to rework my cockpit but I’m much happier with it now. it just didn’t looks right. Andy
McG 6969
Hi Andrew, Glad you managed to sort out your canopy position. That surely is a tricky part of the build. Don't ask about my Dog's subtle canopy variations... Cheers Chris
Andrew Edmead
Nearly done, not perfect by any means but I’ve learnt a lot from doing it.
Andrew Edmead
I’m more or less done now, just servo covers and balancing. The model come in at 4.3 pounds without the ballast. I will take better photos for the finished model thread. can anybody explain how they balanced the model please?
dirk tinck
Hi Andrew ,mark L and R the balancing point on your top wing side , 172 mm (check on Martin's gamma build blog ) behind the leading edge , just beside the fuselage Turn the plane upside down and support it on the balancing points :It should be level when balanced right.
