Ron Gray
OK so not strictly about fitting the 160 or the baffles for it but I thought I would just see how the CG was going to be effected. So I put the P51 in Vanessa and found that with the tail servos positioned at the tail end rather than midships (as Mike suggested a few posts back) the CG should be achievable. Ron Gray
Hmm, ‘unfortunately’ that’s not even half of it, I really need to start thinning it out.
Ron Gray
What a PITB, fiddling around fitting the tail servos In the tail together with a tailwheel. At this stage I’ve not gone for a retractable unit, that may come later. I suppose this is only a tentative link to the 160i engine but it’s because of it that I’m doing this work, promise not to post any more until it’s time for the maiden. Semi concealed rudder ‘horn’. (Bit of paint touch up required).
Jon H
I hope that servo is waterproof Ron as its in the firing line from the tailwheel. Very tidy install though. Edited March 11, 2022 by Jon - Laser Engines
Ron Gray
There’s a cover plate Jon! But just keeping fingers crossed that the (non scale) tailwheel is long enough to stop the tail from dragging on the ground! Ron Gray
I just wish I hadn’t mentioned the potential tailwheel issue as it has been nagging away at me since I posted it! So first thing this morning I bolted everything together and plonked it on my trailer (nearest flat surface), needn’t have worried!
mike skingle
Looks good Ron Flew the mustang today with CG at 140mm flies great and no sudden take offs. When I get a chance to edit the video I'll post some more but the file size is to big at the moment. YouCut_20220319_074827353.mp4
Ron Gray
Thanks Mike and that CG is what I’m aiming for mine for its first flights. Talking of which, it’s nearly ready, just got to fit the wing servos and horns etc so keeping fingers crossed for next week, especially as the weather is looking half decent. Not sure if I’ll have time to print and paint a pilot in time though. Are you still on the 16x8 prop? mike skingle
For these flights, I think 6 in total a 18x8 G-sonic was use it flew very well, mostly at half throttle, vertical performance was excellent.
Ron Gray
Looking at my prop inventory I have APCs 16x8, 17x6, 17x8 and 18x8W so I think I'll start off with the 16x8. Just got to find an STL file for a P51D exhaust stack to save me having to design one!

Mine has no exhausts, the holes are just covered by black gaffer tape. One day I'll sort them out.

Ron Gray
Decided to make my own, first draft print at low resolution but doesn't look too bad. Still got the stacks to print out.
mike skingle
Looking good Ron, one day I'll have to get a 3d printer and work out how to use it but at the moment uploading the flight videos is proving to be a challenge.

Ron Gray
Thanks Mike, great vid and still shot, makes me eager to get mine ready for its maiden, which may have to wait until next week now as I don't think I'll have enough time to finish it off before then. If you want pair of the exhaust stacks then once I'm happy with them I'll send you a pair for yours.
mike skingle
Ron a set of exhusts stacks would be great. One of the guys bought his SLR camera got some great pictures but it shows the blemishes in the paint work. Ron Gray
Well the design and print for a stack turned out OK, so just got to cut, multiply (x6) and add a fixing plate to the 3D print design.

Nice video and the engine sounds great. TBH uploading videos to this site is harder than publishing them on Youtube given the (understandable) restrictions on size, format etc. Publish it on Youtube and all you need to do is post a link here afterwards, and it's far more accessible and searchable in the long run.
