Cuban8
Nice one Jon, very well written indeed. Give that man his own column somewhere or other.
toto
So ..... where I am on the subject of IC engines. As you'll know ..... still much to learn before I commit to even thinking about trying to fly an IC model again. Tried and failed with the Arising star previously. Some serious learning to be done hence ..... this thread. Meanwhile .... I have the following ....... an engine testing jig ........ just like the above ...... and ..... a victim ( I won't say willing ) ..... its the Force .46 that survived the Arising Star experience ....... as good as new as you would be lucky if its seen about an hour total flying time in the air. needs a wee clean up but otherwise good to go as a test - learning piece. I'm currently looking into a Black and Decker workmate from which to create the platform. toto
john stones 1 - Moderator
Good move Toto, prop balancer will be very handy, even though they're pretty good nowadays, sometimes they need a slight rub to remove burrs along the edge as well, have fun.
toto
Hi John .... forgot about a prop balancer .... I'll look into that. I have a small tachometer and various fuel tanks including one of these rather neat square jobs. I'll need separate glow and gas tubing etc. I can pick that stuff up as I go. I have seen various designs and have some slotted brackets that I can use to make things height adjustable .... thinking fuel tank here. I also have various bits of push rods and linkages for the throttle mechanism. Thats for another day though. An ideal exercise to keep me busy through the week in the shed. once built I can use it at one of my clubs where the noise won't matter as much and attention is not dragged towards my shed contents. thats the plan. toto Edited January 19 by toto
john stones 1 - Moderator
I'm with others Toto, best tool is your ears and eyes when the models flying.
toto
It just takes a little bit of experience ..... or a good buddy ..... to get used to what exactly you are looking and listening for ..... I'm sure like everything else ..... that will come. cheers toto
john stones 1 - Moderator
It will, and as said by others, your club expert is the one who flys I.C trouble free, not always the one who talks a lot, eyes n ears. 😉
GrumpyGnome
@toto, presumably you still have fuel tube, glow stick etc. from your earlier experiences....
Jon H
If you are confused by a problem and its repeatable do a video and post it here. Its likely we can then translate the engine speak into something useful. Just remember to keep the camera out of the prop wash as wind noise is not a useful diagnostic tool!

toto
Apologies I did not make the connection between Jon Harper and Laser engines. Back on track now. Many thanks John. Toto
