Daren Cogdon
I'm looking to start my Vintage Model Company Balsa Basics Spitfire in the next wee while, and was just looking to hear from anyone who had experience of building it. I've had my kit for 4 years, but have been so preoccupied with trying to build foamies that it's been sat collecting dust for yonks! Mine has the "upgrade" pack which included the single-stub exhaust pipes and the dual radiator fairings. Paint scheme TBD - possibly a Battle of Britain-style paint scheme or something similar. payneib
I've built and flown all of the Balsa Basics series. They're all excellent, easy to build and fly. Follow the instructions, slot them together, wick in some CA, and cover however you like.
Daren Cogdon
Good to hear! In the videos, the standard covering seems to be something called Oracover? Is there anything you would recommend?

Is there anything you would recommend? Oracover works, as would any generic iron on film. I personally used dressmakers polyester and Ezedope on mine. The Spitfire I used coloured fabric for an almost 1950s FAA Seafire, the Hurricane and 109 I painted.

Maybe worth looking at using the laminating film in this case, since you'll be wanting to paint the Spitfire and using Oracover for that is a tad expensive, especially if you are going to paint over it. Ron's thread about using 38 or 42um laminating film is very instructive and I've been delighted with it in use.
Daren Cogdon
I'll give that a look. Cheers.
leccyflyer
Daren, if you fancy trying the laminating film, just drop me a PM with your address and I'll pop a few metres of it in the post. Afraid I've only got the 38um gloss film as surplus in stock, so that will need rubbing down prior to paint application, but it'll give you a chance to experiment.
Daren Cogdon
Cheers for that. I will drop you a PM.
Nigel Heather
Doesn't help the OP, but just looked at the model in the store and it now seems like there is only one option and that includes the deluxe parts, decals and, most surprisingly, the ployester covering film. Daren Cogdon
Yeah, I had seen that on the site!

Must admit, was tempted to buy a hurricane though - will have to see what electronics I have lying around at home.

At 44" she's the biggest, and she just "copes" better with more conditions. It's got the most wing area too, and it'll absolutely float in like a trainer. The Spit is good, brilliant in fact, but the Hurricane is more gooderer. The 109 can be a little tricky, and there was a typo in the original instructions that put the CoG too far back, but they're all brilliantly flyable and the build are almost identical.
Daren Cogdon
Good to know, as I really want to get the three of them at some point.
Daren Cogdon
I forgot I had started this thread - I made a new one. Oops! Will carry on with my build on the new one.
