Chart Mascot Plan

Recommended Posts

I’ve acquired an old Chart Mascot, which is not complete.

So I’m looking for a drawing, or copy of the original drawing to give me some idea of where to go.

I have a BD Sports drawing, but although they are based on the same model they are different sizes.

So looking for some help on this one.

Happy to pay for it.

Thanks guys.

The DB Sport & Scale Mascot is 59 inch span and I would expect that to be the same design although the current version may have been udated for laser cutting etc.  What span is your model?  Whats missing?

Frankly many Boddington designs were scaled up or down versions of his previous designs so you might work out some missing parts from other designs.   Many plans are on Outerzone now but not the Mascot.  However the Tyro Major is and I would expect that to be similar but slightly different span

Yes it was a foam wing.

No problem to build one though.

Appears to be constant chord and symetrical section.

The plan shows the chord and section, whilst you are given the wingspan.

Wing joiners are also shown, so no problem with dihedral.

If you need any help, let me know.

It could be a wing that is not fully veneered but has capstrips of veneer to save weight and probably money for the kit maker.

Mascot looks very much like the Skyrider plan on Outerzone but changed to a windscreen appearance etc.   Skyrider has a builtup wing so might suit to construct a new wing if required.

Hi Tom,
You say yours is a different size to the DB Sports Mascot - Chart also kitted the 72" span Super Mascot.
If this sounds like yours I might have the instructions still around for the Super Mascot somewhere if you think it will help.

One thing I noticed about the Mascot plan was the one piece elevator- no joiner and it's possible to put an elevator pushrod down the centre of the fuselage direct onto elevator.   A good idea but not typical Boddington construction.   Super Mascot looks the same.

Now I have the drawings( Delivered yesterday, Thank you Kevin) I find that the model I have looks like a mascot, but it’s a built up wing which is flat on the bottom. Also the tail is smaller. And the tail is on top of the fuselage. So I don’t think it’s a Mascot but someone has made a rough copy of the plane. Now I’m not sure whether to bring it back to life, or start again from scratch. I have also found the wood is soaked in fuel, so maybe a winter project and start again. But I was thinking of using lite ply for wing ribs and the fuselage sides, seeing how much wood is now.

I see on Richards Super Mascot that the wing is bolted in place rather than bands, I would like to know how that works as I’m no bands fan. Looking at both plans there doesn’t seem room for the wing to be held in place at the front with dowels.

Some designs use a central ply wing rib extended lower down  into a projecting tongue ( tenon ) which goes into a slot in the bulkhead a bit lower down than the dowel would.

Or you could use 4 wing bolts instead of dowel and 2 bolts.

I’d be tempted, get some foam insulation board. Use as a sheet, bits cut out to emulate lite ply, stiffened with balsa, ribs ditto. Cheap, quick, light. What’s not to like.

when covered, looks he same. Between the wing rear and the motor mounts up the stiffness. Note thicker board is stronger, esp when used in wood/foam trusses

Killer, it’s lighter. Light flies better.

I cannot see the exact size of the balsa on the 59inch Mascot.   For many models that use  1/8 balsa with 1/32 ply doubler for the fuselage sides it should be OK to use 3mm Liteply instead.  Cheaper and lighter.    As the Mascot does not seem  use a ply doubler it should be OK with 3mm Liteply.   The balsa doublers at the front might be balsa or of Liteply with lightening holes.

For a Super Mascot  4mm Liteply would seem more suitable with perhaps a Liteply doubler at the u/c area and wing seat.

Liteply up to 3mm can be cut with a Stanley knife with repeated cuts - easily on the straight lines and with a bit more effort on curves too.   Should also be possible on 4mm too.   More accurate cutting with a knife than fretsaw in my view.   Straight lines can be cut by cutting from both sides - knife is pushed all the way through at each end and then a steel rule used to line up and guide the cut from reverse side.   Easy with a brand new Stanley blade of good quality ( Sheffield or Swedish made! )

Cutting wing ribs from Liteply might be too difficult to cut with a knife or too tedius to cut with a fretsaw.   Careful interleaving of ribs might be a better way to save balsa.    However if you have not already seen it it's worth looking at " Mini Waste Wings" as a way to save balsa and could be especially worthwhile on the larger model..

The Super Mascot wings are foam and the nylon wing bolts screw into captive nuts.
These captive nuts are fixed from underneath into a hardwood crosspiece epoxied underneath the wing seat doublers.
Dowel epoxied into the central wing leading edge locates into ply former.

A Wing held on with bands is usually fine on a trainer however as long as the dowel locations in the fuselage are reasonably well reinforced.

I've got 2 Mascots, one still original I built as a first RC IC model in the early 90's. another same scheme just newer as the old one is rough, and also have a brand new kit in box I bought for £10, including covering.

I actually made a another one, years ago, a copy with built-up wings, extra 2 inch of wing span and flaps. Flew well, but decided to sell it - which I regret as it was a one-off and unique.
