  1. Hi Mr Flicky, Can you find a flair cub? There are two versions, one with a built up wing, and one with a foam/obechi job. I learned to fly on one, and then built a second one, it was that good. Unlike a true scale cub, the flair one is really a trainer. It's not exact scale, but can be made to look pretty good, as long as you don't want the 'grasshopper' version with all the glazing. I did strengthen the fuselage structure under the wing, mainly because it broke on version 1 ernie
  2. Hi, it is a very good sim. I run one on windows 10 and a spektrum interlink DX....I did have to upgrade my PC to get the very best out of it, but it was OK on the standard setup. Go for it ernie
  3. HI, Joining a club is certainly the way to go, they'll explain all the bits and pieces, and may well have some bits that you need to sell you. Personally, I'd avoid the self correction bit. It certainly seems like a good idea, but its important for you to understand the basics of aerodynamics, and therefore the effect all the controls have on your glider ernie
  4. Hi tiny james, and welcome to the forum. You're certainly in the right place for advice. I think your glider is pretty different to a drone. It's a good choice, but for success, you'll have to learn to fly it. You can do this by yourself, but you'll break something. Trust me, you will. But its enormous fun, and can be addictive. You need to think about a few things. INSURANCE you might loose control, and injure someone. Of course you dont intend to, but you might LEARNING you need someone to set the glider up for you, so its not a pig to fly, and to teach you how to fly it MORE SPENDING you need a charger, so that you can charge the batteries that power the plane, and the ones in your radio A CLUB find a local club, go and talk to them. They will almost certainly sort all this stuff out for you Finally, keep asking on the forum, we're here to help ernie
  5. It seems that there are ever increasing numbers of videos on social media that are posted by drone owners. The images that are shown are of incredible quality both from the air, and on the ground. BUT in many many cases the purpose seems to be only to provoke a confrontation with the police, to show them to be idiots and thus to get many followers on the web. These guys have swotted up on their drone laws, and use their knowledge to exploit them to the full, by overflying private property, roads, etc and pushing the rules to the very limit (can you really fly an aircraft that weighs less than 250g over built up areas) This sort of stuff will of course eventually cause the lawmakers to take a close look, and more than likely, the sledgehammer solution will be to ban the lot. ernie
  6. Hi guys, maybe I should clarify what I mean by a vintage trainer Of course a sophisticated free flight model needs very careful fettling and trimming. But I'm not talking about a competition Wakefield here, I mean a simple high wing job, possibly with reduced dihedral, so that it can have effective ailerons, and therefore 4 channel control. As for Gyros, and all that stuff, its essential to learn how to fly the beast, and not depend on wizzardry and electrickery Also re. dumbing down an aerobatic job. Some time ago, I had a super aerobatic fun fly, big stalky undercarriage with huge wheels, a tuned 40 hanging out front, anf a wing as thick as it was wide. Well move the CG a wee bit, reduce the movement of the controls, and my dear old granny could have flown it ernie
  7. Hi Greg, Beware, It's addictive, very addictive, but of course great fun. I reckon that its so important to BUILD your aircraft. Yes it takes some time, but it gives an insight into how it all works, and of course when the inevitable happens (and it will) you are much better prepared to fix it all up You can't beat a big lightweight slow flying vintage model. Maybe it was originally designed for free flight, so hands off the box, and it'll sort itself out. ernie
  8. At least the new guy is a flyer, or is he admiral of the fleet this week ernie
  9. Hi all, It seems to me that the whole caboodle is on ever more shaky ground. Issues are delivered to France weeks later than they used to. One didn't arrive at all, they did send a replacement, but the wrong one. Then another replacement, but another wrong one Subscriptions have become ever more complicated, and why did the wonderful Alex have to fall off his perch? I truly fear that the days of RCM&E are numbered, unless the management show a wee bit of commitment, and get their act together ernie and now I'm told that the email that I've been using for about a million years is being used by another member
  10. Whats happening to RCM&E forum doesn't work. I cant get a mail to post, and now I'm told to 'empty editor' Im tempted to empty the whole shooting match ernie And tha latest issue was late
  11. Well, well, so the techies at RCM&E seem to have got their act together at last, and once again I can thank you all for your input Bob Millinship is just great, makes me want to build a Bleriot........But back to the Fokker I think I understand all about the problems of it all working in flight, and the system used by the manufacturers seems pretty good at moving things about, so its how to keep the covering wrinkle free, and attached to the undercamber. I think I'll sew it on, just on the outer ribs, unless someone suggests something better. ernie
  12. Hi all, I've aired this topic some time ago, but, it's reared its ugly head again, now that the building season looms I have a wonderful 1/4 scale fokker E111 that is just about ready to cover. but there lies unexplored territory ahead. ie the dreaded wing warping Has anyone experience of this? The control linkages are well described in the drawings from Proctor, but some questions 1 how do I prevent the wing coverings from wrinkling when they warp 2 how do I fix the fabric to the underside of the (undercambered) wing so it doesn't pull off 3 is the system really effective 4 What would be a suitable servo to move the whole shebang....powerful but slow, I guess ernie
  13. Hi Jon, I've got a laser 150 that I intend to use in a 1/4 scale fokker E111....For various reasons, I'd like to extend the crankshaft length of the laser (by just a wee bit, say 10mm) Question, Is this OK, if so, how much is practical, and, in general terms what's the best way to do it? And yes, I've got a wee yellow lathe ernie
  14. Well Jon, I do wish you well, I have a yellow one, You'll see an ad. in the mag. It's much better at wee round bits than I am, but a word of caution. Say you need a spinner for that fancy new warbird. So, you need an attachment to do that, and off course one of these fancy diamond cutting tools. A difficult assymetrical bit..Ah yes, a four jaw chuck. every time I look at the thing, out comes the plastic. It's like these fancy laser engines, have you seen one? There are always the wee add ons that are totally necessary, Aluminium spinners, sophisticated engine mounts, electrics to get the thing to run, and propellors, have you seen the price of them go for it ernie
  15. With the Royals, we only see the State Pomp and opening of new buildings. All their jewels and palaces ( with a few exceptions) are held on trust for the Nation....it’s not theirs! I think it was very kind of that nice little old lady to look after all that stuff on our behalf. I'm sure that she polished it every day. But now that she doesn't need it, can I have my bit back? A nice wee Canaletto would do ernie
  16. Hi Peter, what a wondrous machine You might find a book called "We landed by moonlight" of interest The author, Hugh Verity flew lysanders into France to assist the resistance
  17. Hi Tony, RS components have a very good range of this sort of stuff in France, and they are lightening rapide ernie
  18. Ernie

    scam?

Oh, I am getting suspicious in my dottage I have just recieved an email from RCM&E asking me to change the method I use to, pay my subscription. It even refers to the esteemed editor by name But is it genuine? It seems to be, but who knows. ernie
  19. Political comment (presumably, if the inaccurate spelling is interpreted correctly) deleted as it was in poor taste and contravened forum policy.
  20. Hi all, and thanks for all the help re. my RCM&E subscription. Woopee, Its all sorted I spoke to Steve O'hara at Morton Media, who seems to look after these things. I suggsted he should have a look at the forum,so that he could get good feedback, and maybe even contribute Now, time for a wee peek in the postbox ernie
  21. Yes I've spoken to Steve, who was most helpful. All is not yet lost. Thanks Steve
  22. Oh well, after umpteen years of settling down with my favourite mag it's all over No Fenton, Whittaker, and Ashby for me Poor old RCM&E, if they can't get their subscriptions to work, what's next to go? Don't suppose it concerns me any more Now, Where to go? There's an interesting little sexy french number, and even a rather flamboyant american job ernie
  23. Oh dear, what has happened to dear old RCM&E ernie
  24. thanks GG Sorry, but I do know that. I did send an email. shouldn't of said link I cannot imagine a life without my monthly dose of Whittaker et al. ernie
