I've always used m3 cap heads for mounting my Saito 82's and recently put a Hurricane in vertical after the flight battery failed, the engine had to be dug out of the ground which was soft fortunately and the 3mm bolts had sheared off, thicker bolts may have broken the engine lugs. After a good clean up and check the engine was started up and run fine. It is now mounted in an old but good Acrowot to flight test it.

Are 'recommended throws' really necessary?
Eric Robson replied to paul devereux's topic in In The Air
I think the OP was answered in the first reply and what followed was enough hot air to fly a Chinese balloon out of the range of the American fighter jets. It's a great hobby whatever you do with your tranny, just enjoy it. -

Provided your mini lathe has better bearings than mine you should be OK. Use a centre drill to start the bore, less chance of drill wander.

What size is the prop hole and what size is the shaft? If the shaft is 8mm and the prop is 10 which I find with my petrol engines, up to 20cc are 8mm and 20 to 35cc are 10mm shafts. If that is the case with your props stock 10mm Ali. tube 1mm thick would do B&Q stock Ali tube 10 mm diam but I am not sure of the inside diameter

Andy, don't ever think of heating up material to fit on the shaft, there will come a time when it needs to come off to replace bearings etc APC electric props come with plastic inserts to fit various size shafts, if you know anyone who uses these they may have some spare. I have made bushes from plastic and they have been fine just remember to make them shorter than the thickness of the prop as wooden props compress and need regular checks for tightness.

Hi Gang............ thanks for your help,
Eric Robson replied to Frederickoldtimer's topic in IC Engines
From what I understand Frederick is offering an exchange of engines as he wants to build a small Tiger Moth. I don't know about the coffin I have mine payed for also. Like me I hope he gets to build all the models he wants before the coffin is needed. -
Yesterday I had the same problem, everything checked on the ground engine fine after take off on the first circuit it went dead stick and I managed to land it ok all checked 2nd flight same thing ran the plane on the ground and after a short time the throttle shut. the cause was the rx battery it showed fully charged but after a while moving the sticks it died. left for a while it showed full charge but under load it drained rapidly. The plane had been stored in the loft since September and was fully charged before flying, the battery was not very old but is a recycle bin job

Blame it on the novel and film 50 shades of gray starting the trend?

Had the Maiden flight today after rebuild. It's over 15 years old built from a Brian Taylor plan. It originally flew with an OS 70 fs but it was slightly under powdered, just before lockdown the engine cut on take off, it cartwheeled and didn't seem bad so I fitted it with electric power and the performance was great but the wings folded and the result is the lower photo. I took it from the loft just after Christmas intending to bin it but rebuilt it instead, one of the undercarriage legs turned on landing and pulled the unit out but apart from being a bit twitchy till trimmed out it looked good in the air. Most of the cowl is made of depron and foam board only cost about £25 for the rebuild.

Well done Martin, a good looking airframe for the cost of a sheet of 1/4" balsa.

It's not the warmth John it's the wellie sticking in the mud as you lift your foot. The entrance is worse now than when this picture was taken .

I cancelled Sky broadband when my contract was ended and switched to Shell. Got an email from Shell saying sorry to hear you are staying with your current provider. This happened 3 times, I cancelled the Sky D. D. at the bank. Still get letters and emails begging me to go back, they all go in the bin. As with Martian I find the content less interesting and I don't think I will renew my subscription this year.

Belated thanks Ron, Happy with the prop selection I glued the foam spinners on and gained a minute in duration with a better performance. Had a good days flying with these two the Se5 chased a Dynam Albatros Dva, looked good in the clear blue sky. Pity the field entrance is like the Somme, I hate wellies.

Hi LM, after the crash I decided to build another and scaled my original drawing up from 48" span to 57" using a balsa frame and foamboard for the formers and depron sheeting, the wings were made with ply ribs in the centre section as I fitted retracts. It is covered in brown paper and painted with acrylic paints, flies great on 4s. The canopy is a cut down Tempest one from Sarik. Sorry for hijacking your thread Martin.

First time I used emulsion to paint a wall I thought the splashes would clean of easily with water, wrong once dry it is almost water proof. I built a Hawker Seafury from depron and painted it with emulsion, I flew it when the grass was wet and on snow, no other protection on the model.itwas still good after 6 years till it was destroyed in a mid air.

It does that often on our field, from a calm morning it turned blustery mid flight yesterday and as I only had light weights I wrapped in had a chat with the other members then went to load the car and the wind dropped again. As the field is very muddy at the entrance I did not want to struggle through it again as sods law the wind would have picked up again. It remained calm for the rest of the afternoon.

The retracts are Comet, I had some they worked well. The quadrant could be removed and I made a new one from marine ply to reduce the movement to suit a FW 190. It worked for a while but became erratic so I put the plastic one back. The later Mick Reeves Spitfire had a modified wing to attain a more elliptical shape, if my memory is correct.
