Lindsay Todd
Thought this might prove interesting. I needed to find a 7 cylinder radial engine for one of my current projects an AM62 Zero from the World Models Giant Scale series that is undergoing some scale improvements. With nothing turning up I decided to have a crack at designing my own wooden laser cut kit by draughting up a reasonable attempt in 2mm litply and 6mm balsa components that could be just glued together. I am rather pleased with the end result and it just shows what is possible with a bit of latteral thinking. Linds
Tim Hooper
This looks good, Linds! I'm sure there's a market out there..... tim

Eamonn Fahey
Nice one Lindsay! Can we have some more photos please? How deep is it? As Tim says definately a market for it. How much?
Lindsay Todd
Cheers guys, Alan think its about 82", Barkston hopefully in two weeks! Linds
Biggles' Elder Brother - Moderator
Nice one Linds. Are we going to see this down at the strip? BEB
Alan Cantwell
that will be the same as mine, i knew it was 80 something, i hope its worth the £50 it stands me at !!
Lindsay Todd
Hi BEB, certainly hope so as the wing photo might suggest have gone to town a bit on this one so its taking a while but nearly ready. I hate rivets! Linds
Vecchio Austriaco
Even if you hate rivets - what you did looks great.... VA
Lindsay Todd
More photos of the engine coming soon, just waiting for the resin coat to dry so I can move it. At the moment this is 155mm dia and about 38mm deep, which makes it about 1/6th scale approx. Linds
Steve Hargreaves - Moderator
Looks great Lindsay......first class job..... Do you intend to use two units offset to replicate the 14cylinder motors used in the Zero? Should look really good!!!
Lindsay Todd
Thanks Steve, not sure I will have space for two, but as you say would be nice. This is how my laser kit of parts looked when returned from SLEC although I did sort out the bits into individual bags. In its primer coat with a bit of detail added, shows the dpeth a little better. I'll make up plugs and leads and a brass central ring next before fixing in the cowl. Linds
Alan Cantwell
sorry, that looks terrible, i think you need to start again, and this time try harder, BUT, all is not lost, i am willing to put it in my zero, i wont tell anyone you made it, i dont want to embarass you, so i will take full credit, do you want my address???? Alan Cantwell
but seriously, lovely job, would there be any chance of a kit from slec? i think there should be quite a market for this type of thing, for instance, i want a quarter scale engine for my P26 Peashooter, i could make it out of flimsy williams cylinders, but the cost is horrific, might be worth pursuing?? Danny Fenton
looks great Linds, should set the zero off nicely. Fab rivetting too Cheers Danny
Eamonn Fahey
Two of them glued back to back would look great on my Sterling Stearman PT17. As Alan says the alternative is Flimsy Williams Bros cylinders. +1 on rivets
Alan Cantwell
OOPS, forgot the rivets---erm, i think they are rivetting
Tim Hooper
I'm just wondering if the CAD file could be altered in size to suit other applications? tim
Stefan Hafner
Looks great, should be nice and light too?? I would think it would be fairly simple to alter the CAD file, I use ProE and any alterations to the 3D model are automatically changed in the drawings, but depends on the program I guess. Lindsay Todd
Hi Tim, absolutely yes, I am working on several vesions, a 7 cylinder and 9 cylinder in 1/6, 1/5 and 1/4 scales. The drawing cab be scaled but you need to make some adjustments to maintain material thicknesses and clearances. I have not weighed the item but they are pretty light. Will hopefully have few around in a few weeks or so. Meanwhile here is a pic of the unit fitted into the zero, as so often i needed to loose a cylinder, and before anyone comments on the prop being a bit small, i keep hold of the odd one or two cut them down and use them to help align cowls, spinners etc. Edited By Lindsay Todd on 08/04/2012 21:36:
